Werner Helsen is full professor in Motor Learning and Control at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences of the KU Leuven,Belgium. After his mandate as Chairman of the research group for movement Control and Neuroplasticity (2006- 2011), he was elected Programme Director (2011-2015).
He is also head of the Perception and Performance laboratory. His research interests focus on the visual control of voluntary movement as well as on the development and acquisition of expert perception and performance. He teaches motor learning and control as well as training and coaching theory in team sports in general and football, in particular. As from 1999 on, he has been appointed by FIFA and UEFA as a sports scientist and training expert for the match officials’ physical preparation
and evaluation.
