It is possible to assess certain aspects of nutrition in the milking herd if you know the signs. This analysis of lamb's performance within retail and the typical profile of a lamb shopper was carried out to better inform the industry on the impact of events on lamb's demand and which sector of society the growth is seen in. There were 3 key results: - Lamb is important to consumers around Easter, with increased demand for roasting joints in part due to the greater volumes on promotion. - Older shoppers tend to purchase more lamb although recently we have seen increased demand from middle aged consumers. - Greater lamb volumes around Easter are unlikely to be maintained throughout 2024 due to the cost-of-living crisis. Out-of-home volumes are also predicted to struggle versus 2023. To celebrate 100 years of Soil science, The international 4 per 1000 Initiative showcases the work of its Scientific and Technical Committee at the higher level of the Rio Conventions to Put Soils Higher on the International Agenda.

ABC-Map was designed with the specific objective of holistically assessing the environmental impacts of national policies, plans and investments in the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sector through Google Earth-based satellite imagery. ABC-Map helps to develop synergies and trade-offs between climate, biodiversity and land restoration actions. The adaptation section helps to understand exposure to climate change risks and to assess climate change over time in a given area. The biodiversity section covers a series of indicators that are intended to complement each other and provide a more comprehensive view of pressures and impacts on biodiversity. The carbon section aims to account for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the AFOLU sector and work towards their reduction. The overall objective of this flyer is to inform readers (i) what ABC-Map is, (ii) it's structure, and (iii) ABC-Map's partners.

The Nationally Determined Contribution Expert Tool (NEXT) is a greenhouse gas accounting tool developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to support annual environmental impact assessment for the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sector. NEXT provides a 30-year time-series of annual and cumulated estimates of carbon removal and greenhouse gas emissions reductions from climate actions made by Parties to the Paris Agreement. It was developed using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodologies, and estimates can be made using the IPCC 2006 guidelines (IPCC 2006) or the IPCC 2019 refinement to the IPCC 2006 (IPCC 2019) which are both complemented by the IPCC 2013 wetlands supplement (IPCC 2013). The tool was designed to provide results that directly respond to the provisions of the Paris Agreement’s enhanced transparency framework. It supports the tracking of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) as required by the modalities procedures and guidelines (MPGs). NEXT provides a high temporal series of results and a wide set of indicators, including the social value of carbon. This makes it possible to have a comprehensive environmental and economic overview of climate actions in achieving a mitigation target. Finally, the tool helps countries interpret, track and scale up ambition of their NDCs and this could ultimately feed into, and inform, the global stocktake of the Paris Agreement in a harmonized way.

To help restoration actors, funders and other partners plan, carry out and monitor successful projects, WRI and FAO have created AURORA, a web application named for Assessment, Understanding and Reporting of Restoration Activities. It is these GHGs in the atmosphere that trap heat and are raising the Earth’s surface temperature. The tool will identify carbon hotspots, or risks, and then supply the data needed to drive positive supply chain transformation. Can Increasing Soil Organic Carbon Boost Crop Productivity? In this webinar, we delve into the role of soil organic carbon sequestration in combating climate change and enhancing crop production. Understanding the interplay between soil health and crop productivity is highly relevant as we face climate change and food security challenges. Dominic Woolf from Cornell University will share his latest findings from analysing more than 10,000 controlled field trials extrapolated to the global scale. He will discuss the effectiveness of soil organic carbon sequestration compared to nitrogen fertilization in improving crop yields, especially under optimized soil management. Mauricio Cherubin from the University of Sao Paulo will draw from studies in tropical regions on implementing soil carbon management techniques, resulting in improved crop productivity and livelihood. We will discuss the potential increase in global crop production by optimising soil carbon levels and opportunities to use technologies and practices to achieve multiple benefits. Moderated by Budiman Minasny, The University of Sydney, 4 per 1000 Science and Technical Committee. Speakers: Beverley Henry, an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Biology and Environmental Science, Queensland University of Technology, Australia. Her research focuses on climate change and the land sector, including managing emissions from vegetation, soils and livestock production, and MRV systems for carbon offsets in agriculture and forestry. Dominic Woolf, a Senior Research Associate in the School of Integrative Plant Science Soil and Crop Sciences Section, Cornell University. His research focuses on addressing the challenge of removing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Utilizing quantitative modelling, he evaluates the efficacy of strategies such as soil carbon sequestration, land restoration, and sustainable management practices. His work informs policy decisions by assessing economic and environmental trade-offs. Maurício Roberto Cherubin, a professor at University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, is an agronomist with extensive research experience at leading institutions, including USDA and CENA/USP, specializing in soil science, plant nutrition, and environmental biogeochemistry. He established and leads the Soil Health & Management Research Group (SOHMA) at ESALQ/USP, concentrating on land use, soil management, soil health, carbon sequestration, nature-based solutions, and ecosystem services. He is the deputy general coordinator and research director of the newly established Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture.

Despite being natural leaders and innovators, due to the nature of their work many farmers don’t fully understand the value that good leadership can have on their business. External pressures continue to mount on rural businesses. Farms are becoming increasingly reliant on a web of other people to create a sustainable and prosperous agricultural sector. This report explores what forms leadership can take in farming businesses around the world and examines case studies where farmers have influenced a wide group of stakeholders towards a common aim. Definitions of leadership were created by speaking to senior members of the UK armed forces. The military places people at the centre of leadership, with a high regard for meeting the needs of soldiers and their families. Referencing the importance of the mission, leaders ensure everyone understands how they can contribute towards collective goals. There are a number of different ways that people can become leaders within the field of agriculture. In the USA there is a well-developed network of formal agricultural leadership programmes across the different states. In the Netherlands farmers have responded to advancing environmental legislation and created their own political movement for change. ‘Grass-roots’ leadership is possible within agriculture, where everyone involved in food production can make a contribution. By working with others and exchanging ideas, small ideas can turn into lasting innovations. Leaders can work with employees to produce farms which become great places to work, like Grupo Morena in Brazil. Looking after all the needs of the people who work for you will result in employees who are committed to, and take pride in, the business they work for. The importance of expressing leadership within the community was highlighted in Kenya and Rwanda. Farms in these countries had a wide range of initiatives to support the local community and they relied on maximising this soft power to achieve success in the face of wider business uncertainty. “Leadership is knowing yourself and others, to the point where people are willingly influenced towards a common goal.” Successful leaders take care of themselves and those around them to create a strong team. Farmers must prioritise their own physical and mental health in order to build resilience. Leaders must be role models for a caring attitude and cultivate a strong support network for themselves and those they work with. Good leadership is characterised by developing self-knowledge, knowing your employees and knowing your community. Profiling of personality traits may be helpful in some of these examples. Farmers need to create and action a stakeholder risk management plan that identifies key people or organisations that impact their business. Farms must aspire to be a great place to work to significantly improve their reputation, employee retention and recruitment prospects. During the recent European Youth Week kick-off event in Brussels, European Commission’s directorate-general for agriculture and rural development held a breakout session for young farmers, rural activists and twentysomethings interested in a life on the land. The purpose of the session was to learn more about these young people’s aspirations, concerns and perspectives, to better tailor policy in favour of generational renewal. Our 43rd episode of Food for Europe travels to Ireland and Spain to meet two young people living in rural areas, and to follow them to Brussels as they contribute to the European Youth Week event.

Aisla's full report can be downloaded from: https://bit.ly/3RsNPNL ***** Executive Summary Background A constraint to the potential growth and long-term sustainability of global aquaculture in the coming decades, is the availability and sustainability of aquafeed (Naylor et al., 2021). Aquafeed ingredients may account for up to 90% of the environmental impacts and carbon footprint of farmed fish production (Little et al., 2018). In the last few years, many UK retailers and seafood companies have set ambitious carbon emissions targets as well as having broad responsible sourcing policies which include seafood. Scottish Salmon is the UK’s largest food export and a popular domestic product (Seafish, 2021). In addition, UK consumers enjoy a range of imported farmed fish species e.g., farmed prawns, seabass and pangasius. These species rely on feed made up of a range of globally sourced ingredients which contributes to the carbon and environmental footprint of the product. This project aimed to explore the environmental impacts of traditional and ‘alternative’ aquafeed ingredients and identify opportunities for retailers and seafood supply chains to support more sustainable feed ingredient production and use. Methods As part of the Nuffield study tour, six countries were visited: Brazil, Norway, Singapore, Thailand, USA and the UK. Visits and meetings were carried out with a range of aquaculture feed stakeholders including feed ingredient producers, feed manufacturers, fish farmers, researchers, seafood processors, seafood companies and retailers; a sample also participated in in-depth interviews. Results Through the study tour, examples of aquaculture feed sustainability initiatives were observed which may mitigate some of the environmental impacts of aquaculture feed production. Aquafeed data collection and certification was largely focused on ‘known risks’ i.e., environmental impacts of marine ingredients and soy. Stakeholders suggested that feed companies are currently leading work on feed sustainability. Limitations to working more on feed sustainability was largely lack of information and data regarding feed production and sustainability challenges. Finding sustainable alternative ingredients was agreed to be the main priority for future aquafeed sustainability. Discussion and conclusions Retailers and suppliers can support more sustainable aquaculture feed through: • Managing risks e.g., using data and certification; responsible sourcing policies • Supporting improvement efforts e.g., supply chain engagement, advocacy, and investment Although there are existing data and certification tools available to the supply chain, supply chains should advocate for improved traceability and transparency of feed ingredients to allow better understanding of feed ingredient production and associated environmental and social risks. An opportunity to support best practice and drive sustainability could be the creation of an independent holistic risk assessment tools focused on feed ingredients and in a format readily accessible to non-feed experts. More clear and consistent asks from aquaculture supply chains could encourage feed companies to prioritise feed sustainability when formulating feed. Within the European Union, there are more than 300 civilian and military authorities responsible for carrying out coast guard functions. There is therefore a need to ensure a close cross-border and cross-sector collaboration and coordination between these authorities in order to avoid duplication and redundancy of efforts and to build up synergies. In the EU and the European Economic Area, the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) support national authorities in carrying out coast guard functions. To provide this support at national and EU level and, where appropriate, at international level, the founding Regulations of each of the three agencies were amended in 2016 with a common article on European cooperation on coast guard functions.

Coupled with declining government financial support, increased cost of production and market unknowns, there has never been a better time to reassess our animals and systems. Winter in the UK is the most costly time of the year due to high feed requirements. This couldn’t be truer than in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. With our long, growthy summer days and longer, dark, wet winters, managing the extremes of our pasture growth curve is challenging. Having robust and resilient animals is key to meeting this challenge. For decades we have known that good Body Condition Score (BCS) is essential in cows and ewes at key times in the year. Simplified, BCS is the physical and/or visual scoring of fat and muscle across the lower back of an animal. Recommendations exist for how to condition score and what score is desired at key times in the reproduction cycle. Good BCS is directly linked with better animal health, increased fertility and reduced feed requirements. These three things alone are enough to merit more attention on the subject. Not all animals are created equal and some are able to both put on and hold condition more easily than others – traditionally known as ‘easy fleshing’ animals. Significant worldwide research into the genetic component of BCS puts the trait at around 25% heritability. In practical terms this means genetic gain can be made relatively easily through recording and selection. I visited commercial and pedigree cattle and sheep producers in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland and the UK. Those who had taken on board the message of actively selecting for body condition reported a number of productivity and animal welfare benefits. BCS can be manipulated by environmental nutrition and it is therefore a trait that is easily masked by preferential or excessive feeding. It was, almost universally, acknowledged by those I visited that the pedigree industry have not done enough to provide commercial farmers with bulls and rams fit for commercial environments. Though, equally, commercial farmers don’t do themselves any favours by supporting the status quo. It is essential that breeding stock are subjected to some nutritional and environmental pressure if we are to identify those with the genetic ability to put on and hold body condition. Those I visited reported that higher BCS became most valuable during tough periods – in either difficult winters or droughts. As our climate becomes more unpredictable, the ability of an animal to ride out the extremes will become more important. Though even in a normal season the genetic propensity to hold condition still presents plenty of opportunities, including increasing stocking rates. With this knowledge in mind and an eye on continuing research using new technology and information, it is apparent that there exists significant opportunity within the beef and sheep sectors to build herds and flocks fit for the future by prioritising body condition as part of the selection process. ***** Nuffield Farming Scholarships are awarded to approximately 20 members of the UK food, farming, horticulture and rural industries each year. Minister Charlie McConalogue toured Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan to see the work being done by the World Food Programme. He announced that Ireland will increase it's funding of the WFP by 40%. A total of €105m will be allocated over the next three year of our Strategic Partnership Agreement. This will support the invaluable humanitarian work being carried out. Food insecurity is a huge issue that is being addressed through infrastructural investment, education, training in new farming methods and the provision of food supports. New entrant Cathryn Baillie and her partner, a 4th generation crofter, have recently taken on the tenancy of a 1 ha in-bye and 1 ha apportionment in Skye.
