Although rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects more than 18 million people worldwide, most people are diagnosed when the disease is already at a chronic stage. No drugs are currently approved to intervene in the early stages of arthritis, before the onset of joint inflammation. The RTCure project developed and validated new methods to identify those at risk of RA and monitor disease progression, as well as investigating how to inhibit or modify the pathogenic autoimmune responses underlying RA, an approach that could result in a specific and long-lasting therapeutic effect (ultimately a cure) for a majority of RA patients. The project also created tools to aid in the development of treatments for people in the earliest stages of rheumatoid arthritis and those at risk of developing it, and furthered understanding of the disease phase prior to RA diagnosis. RT Cure’s results indicated that the prevention of rheumatoid arthritis is possible – join us for In conversation with RT Cure to find out how.

In this episode of Rare on Air, host Julien Poulain explores the latest findings from EURORDIS Rare Barometer’s extensive survey on the diagnostic journeys of over 10,000 people across Europe, either living with a rare disease or as a close relative of someone who does. Julien first speaks to Ayça Şahin, a PhD student in neuroscience living in Turkey with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), who shares her and her brother’s journey to receiving an SMA diagnosis. Ayça highlights the critical importance of early and accurate diagnoses for rare disease patients in Europe. Reflecting on Ayça's story, EURORDIS Social Research Director Jessie Dubief discusses the survey results, revealing that the average rare disease patient in Europe waits nearly five years for a diagnosis. The Innovative Healt...
Antimicrobial resistance is considered to be one of the top global public health and development threats, and it's estimated to cause more than 35 000 deaths per year in the EU. Despite this, few new antibiotics make it onto the market, meaning that there is an urgent need for innovative antimicrobials to treat resistant infections. The COMBACTE projects - COMBACTE-NET, COMBACTE-MAGNET and COMBACTE-CARE formed public-private partnerships with the goal of addressing the challenges of clinical development of antibacterial medicines in response to antibiotic resistance. COMBACTE-NET focused on building strong clinical, laboratory and research networks to boost efficiency in testing new antibacterial agents; COMBACTE-MAGNET investigated the needs of critically-ill patients to develop better targeted treatments; and COMBACTE-CARE laid the foundations for the development of novel treatments against multi-drug resistant bacteria. This online webinar will highlight the impact that the COMBACTE projects are having in tackling antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The COMBACTE projects are part of IMI's New Drugs for Bad Bugs programme, which comprises several projects that are finding solutions to the scientific, regulatory, and business challenges that are hampering the development of new antibiotics.

European Society for...
Fernanda Mosele discusses the recommendations for the use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for patients with advanced cancer in 2024: a report from the ESMO Precision Medicine Working Group published in the Annals of Oncology. The recommendations feature the clinical impact of tumour NGS in guiding treatment decision using the ESMO Scale for Clinical Actionability of molecular Targets (ESCAT) considering cost-effectiveness and accessibility. As for previous 2020 recommendations, ESMO recommends running tumour NGS in advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, and ovarian cancer. Moreover, it is recommended to perform tumour NGS in clinical research centres and under specific circumstances discussed with patients. In this updated report, the consensus within the group has led to an expansion of the recommendations to encompass patients with advanced breast cancer and rare tumours such as gastrointestinal stromal tumours, sarcoma, thyroid cancer, and cancer of unknown primary. Finally, ESMO recommends performing tumour NGS to detect tumour-agnostic alterations in patients with metastatic cancers where access to matched therapies is available. https://www.annalsofoncology.org/article/S0923-7534(24)00111-X/fulltext https://www.esmo.org

The World Health Organization (WHO) launched a publication, which describes progress and gaps identified during the first two years of implementing the global health sector strategies on HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) for 2022-2030. The publication builds on its short report. The latest data show that new acquisitions and deaths are not declining fast enough. Gains have been made in expanding access to HIV and hepatitis C treatment and the validation of elimination of vertical transmission of HIV and/or syphilis in 19 countries, but many indicators needed to achieve the global targets are off track. We asked key leaders in the responses to HIV, viral hepatitis and STIs how we can increase visibility, political will and community activism to accelerate action. The webinar was organized by the IAS and its partners, WHO, MPP and Unitaid.

Update on Hypermobile type of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS).
17 May 2024
ERN ReCONNET
Short description Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) are exclusion diagnoses. Both are aspecific phenotypes sharing joint hypermobility and minor soft tissue anomalies with monogenic connective tissue disorders. Therefore, molecular testing may be useful to confirm the diagnosis by excluding partially overlapping disorders within and outside the current nosology of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and related disorders. The first presentation is focused on offering an overview of the clinical boundaries of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorders, and to describe the current molecular genetic diagnostics applied in the field of clinically relevant joint hypermobility. The second presentation reports about the new acquisitions on morphological and functional aspects of peripheral microcirculation and skin layers in hypermobile EDS, as peripheral microcirculation was assessed for the first time in the literature and skin layers were previously poorly studied. Microvascular fragility is present also in hypermobile EDS as well as dermal thickness is thinner. Speakers Dr. Marco Castori is the Head of the Division of Medical Genetics, the Coordinator of the Rare Disease Program at the Hospital Fondazione IRCCS-Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, San Giovanni Rotondo - Foggia (Italy). In addition, Dr. Castori is a Member of ERN ReCONNET Working Group on Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and ERN-SKIN as well. Prof. Alberto Sulli is an Associate Professor of Rheumatology at IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino - Genova (Italy). EGU WEBINARS: Uneven ground: fieldwork accessibility for women
14 May 2024
European Geosciences...
What are the challenges women face when working in the field? What needs to be done to overcome these challenges and make fieldwork safer, more accessible, and more inclusive? Women encounter a host of challenges when engaging with fieldwork, many of which adversely impact how they navigate science or continue to pursue their career. This webinar featured three speakers who discussed the challenges and the actions needed to improve fieldwork for women: Anouk Beniest, who provided the perspective of a fieldwork educator, Florina Schalamon, who discussed how to challenge traditional narratives of what it means to be a polar explorer, and Nicolas Coltice, a representative of the “Did This Really Happen?” group, a project which highlights daily sexism in academia. This webinar was moderated by Simon Clark and Öykü Koç. The audience will hear of the challenges women face when engaging in fieldwork. The negative experiences of women were shared, including perspectives from the results of study to personal experience. The speakers also discussed how to approach overcoming these challenges, from communication strategies and challenging harmful perspectives of fieldwork, to identifying and inspiring needed change. Finally, the speakers shared examples of positive change that have worked in improving fieldwork for women. This is the first webinar in a multi-part of series which examines fieldwork practices and accessibility. The webinar lasted for one hour and concluded with an audience Q&A. Speakers: Anouk Beniest – Anouk is Assistant Professor in Tectonics at Department of Geology and Geochemistry at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands, and former Early Career Scientist Union Representative for the European Geosciences Union. Florina Schalamon – PhD candidate in Centennial Climate Drivers of Glacier Changes in Greenland at Karls-Frazens Universitat, Austria. Nicolas Coltice - Nicolas holds a professorship at Université Côte d’Azur in France. Previously, he served as a professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and the University of Lyon. His research focuses on the history and dynamics of Earth's interior and planetary bodies. He is a recipient of an ERC Advanced Grant, and it was throughout a previous ERC grant that he founded the initiative didthisreallyhappen.net with Alice Adenis, Maëlis Arnould, Marie Bocher, Mélanie Gérault, Claire Mallard and Martina Ulvrova, dedicated to fighting everyday sexism within the geosciences. Öykü Koç - Öykü is a PhD student at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) whose research focuses on the time-variable gravity field recovery to model mass changes driven by geophysical processes. More specifically, Öykü has been working on ways to mitigate temporal aliasing to capture more of the geophysical signal under the context of future gravity missions. Öykü is also the EGU Early Career Scientist representative for the Geodesy division. Resources shared during this webinar: - Network of women working in Polar Science: https://womeninpolarscience.org/ - Polar Impact: https://www.polarimpactnetwork.org/ - Snowflakes, Slack Channel for minoritized genders in the Cryosphere - APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientist): https://www.apecs.is/ - Survey about lived experiences of women on polar fieldwork: https://forms.gle/vwfKmBbSQu7PWGqV9 - Did this really happen?: https://didthisreallyhappen.net/ For more information about future webinars visit: https://www.egu.eu/webinars/ Follow us: Twitter: https://twitter.com/EuroGeosciences Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eurogeoscie... #EGU23 US1 - Managing compounding impacts from extreme events through societal crises
13 May 2024
European Geosciences...
Society has been facing many compounding impacts from extreme events related to natural and geo-hazards (storms, floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions, landslides, forest fires, etc.) that occur simultaneously or in succession. Ongoing societal, environmental, and political crises (such as the COVID19 pandemic and armed conflicts) provide additional challenges, reducing our capacity to deal with these compounding hazards and potentially impacting our ability to manage them in the future with resources, policies, and attention being redirected. With climate change likely to exacerbate the compounding impacts of these extreme events, this symposium asks whether we have the capacity to predict them in advance and reduce ecological, social, and economic damages. Knowing how science is used during extreme events, societal crises and subsequent policy discussions is key to understanding the role that researchers and the scientific community can play in providing evidence and support during pivotal moments. This symposium will address how Europe can more effectively address multihazards and compounding impacts from extreme events through ongoing societal crises. It will outline the policy pathways and key legislation, such as the Sustainable Development Goals and European Green Deal, that are needed to frame common goals and how our current geopolitical crises will impact them. It will use specific examples, such as recent European droughts, current energy shortage, and potential food insecurity, to discuss how scientific evidence has been used to steer decisions and how these challenges could be used to boost technical developments and future initiatives. The panel will also discuss the need to create pre-emptive strategies and frameworks that minimize the impact of compounding natural disasters, unexpected societal crises, and resource shortages. We are very excited to welcome four excellent speakers to this Union symposium: - Dr Philip Ward: Professor of Global Water Risk Dynamics, Institute for Environmental Studies, Free University Amsterdam, Netherlands - Dr Tina Comes: Professor in Decision Theory & ICT for Resilience, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands - Dr Elena Rovenskaya: Program Director, Advancing Systems Analysis Program, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria - Dr Artur Malantowicz: Leader of the Union Civil Protection Knowledge Network Coordination Team, Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), European Commission The session was moderated by: Bikem Ekberzade, photojournalist, author and radio producer, and PhD student on the responses of different ecosystems (terrestrial and aquatic) to external pressures and disturbances. Convener: Micha Werner Co-conveners: Viktor J. Bruckman, Emmanuel Salmon EDITORS NOTE: All opinions, statements and questions are the speakers own and do not necessarily reflect the European Geosciences Union, but have been shared here in the name of supporting open, transparent and unedited discussion on this topic.
