The Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool has been designed to help businesses understand greenhouse gas emissions in seafood supply chains. It is these GHGs in the atmosphere that trap heat and are raising the Earth’s surface temperature. The tool will identify carbon hotspots, or risks, and then supply the data needed to drive positive supply chain transformation. The peer-review process, a cornerstone of scientific publishing, necessitates the contribution of significant expertise and time from other scientists on a voluntary basis (for free). This ensures the quality and integrity of research before publication. However, the financial burden of publication itself often falls on the authors, and access to the published work can be further restricted by paywalls. This creates an interesting dynamic where the dissemination of knowledge rests heavily on the pro bono efforts of researchers. It underscores the vital, yet often unseen, role scientists play in maintaining the scientific record. If all of a sudden all scientists stopped working for free, the world of research would collapse.

VET is crucial for equipping young people and adults with knowledge and skills to thrive in the labour market and society, embracing the digital and green transitions. What are European countries doing to make their VET systems agile, flexible, excellent, attractive, inclusive and quality-assured? How do different stakeholders contribute to making this happen and how do they overcome the challenges they encounter? Participants of Cedefop’s 9th virtual get-together, in the context of the European Year of Skills, will discuss these questions on 17 April 2024.

Most Just Transition Fund (JTF) territories have already had one year of project implementation since most of their Territorial Just Transition Plans were approved by the end of 2022. As projects get off the ground, JTF regions are also coming to terms with a need for robustly monitor performance. The JTF Regulation outlines an obligation for monitoring mechanisms and lists numerous key criteria to be heeded, but on the ground, they need to be more appropriately extended and tailored to match each region’s context. The green transition is providing the opportunity for new jobs to be created, yet the workforce needed to facilitate this transition does not yet exist. Today is a really important opportunity to celebrate. To celebrate the incredible impact and contribution of nurses and of student nurses here in Ireland and right around the world. Your dedication and compassion... your skill and professionalism and commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of so many people... that work does not go unnoticed. This year's theme is 'Our Nurses, Our Future, the Economic Power of Care', and it really resonates with me as Minister for Health. Nurses, as you know, will continue to play a vital and a central role in shaping the future of healthcare in Ireland. It's been my great honour to support nursing in Ireland with a lot more funding, big increases in the workforce and advances in the opportunities available to nurses. We're continuing to increase our undergraduate training nursing numbers. In the coming years, I'm determined to maintain and to build on the momentum we've achieved. Not just more places, but also additional routes into nursing. There are now more than 85,000 nurses and midwives registered to practice in Ireland. The number of registrants is increasing every year. I'm very aware that nurses educated abroad make up a big part of our workforce and play an essential role in our health services here in Ireland. I want to say that Ireland will always have internationally trained nurses as part of our workforce. The investment and the opportunities will continue to reflect the importance of this diversity. Nursing continues to be a very attractive career, one that offers more exciting career opportunities in both hospitals and community settings than ever before. And we can see this across leadership roles, specialist roles and advanced practice roles. I'm delighted to see that the Chief Nursing Officer has now launched the strategy for professions. It fully supports further investment, increased productivity, improved working conditions, and the ambitious reform agenda that we have. Can Increasing Soil Organic Carbon Boost Crop Productivity? In this webinar, we delve into the role of soil organic carbon sequestration in combating climate change and enhancing crop production. Understanding the interplay between soil health and crop productivity is highly relevant as we face climate change and food security challenges. Dominic Woolf from Cornell University will share his latest findings from analysing more than 10,000 controlled field trials extrapolated to the global scale. He will discuss the effectiveness of soil organic carbon sequestration compared to nitrogen fertilization in improving crop yields, especially under optimized soil management. Mauricio Cherubin from the University of Sao Paulo will draw from studies in tropical regions on implementing soil carbon management techniques, resulting in improved crop productivity and livelihood. We will discuss the potential increase in global crop production by optimising soil carbon levels and opportunities to use technologies and practices to achieve multiple benefits. Maurício Roberto Cherubin, a professor at University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, is an agronomist with extensive research experience at leading institutions, including USDA and CENA/USP, specializing in soil science, plant nutrition, and environmental biogeochemistry. He established and leads the Soil Health & Management Research Group (SOHMA) at ESALQ/USP, concentrating on land use, soil management, soil health, carbon sequestration, nature-based solutions, and ecosystem services. He is the deputy general coordinator and research director of the newly established Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture.

A group of 12 volunteers are sticking to a strict bed routine for 60 days, lying with their feet up and one shoulder always touching the mattress. This reclined lifestyle includes meals, showers and toilet breaks, as well as intensive cycling and centrifuge rides for some. The BRACE study follows a two-month bedtime schedule to investigate how cycling and artificial gravity could counteract changes the human body experiences in space. Astronauts face similar physiological problems as elderly and bedridden patients on Earth. During space missions, astronauts’ bodies go through a wide array of changes – everything from their eyes to their heart might be affected, and their muscles and bones start to deteriorate. To battle this degradation, crew members exercise two hours per day on the International Space Station. The BRACE study involves male participants between the ages of 20 and 45 years with good physical and mental health. They are placed in beds tilted 6° below the horizontal position. As blood flows to the head and muscle wears out from lack of use, researchers chart how their bodies react. Researchers split the volunteers in three groups. One group cycles in bed, a second one cycles while being spun on a centrifuge, and a third control group stays in bed for the full two months with no bike exercise or centrifuge rides. The centrifuge mimics artificial gravity, acting on all organs at once. Volunteers are spun to drive blood towards their feet, where the force of gravity doubles during the ride. Scientists hope artificial gravity could be used to keep astronauts fit and healthy in space. Now halfway through its second edition, the experiment will finish on 4 May 2024, after 95 days of intense clinical testing and monitoring. This campaign takes place at MEDES, the Institute for Space Medicine and Physiology in Toulouse, France, and is supported by the French Space Agency CNES. The study involves 14 European and international science teams that are working to release the results from the first BRACE campaign in 2023. Researchers are assessing a wide range of changes in the cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neuro-sensorial, haematological, and immunological systems. The tests will provide a better understanding of the effects of prolonged bedrest to the benefit of those in space and on Earth. Each year, on the 9th May, the European Union celebrates peace, solidarity, diversity and unity in Europe. This date marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman declaration' in which Robert Schuman set out the beautiful project, the beautiful dream, of the European Union. With wars raging around us, from Ukraine to Gaza, the message that former enemies can make peace and build a better future is more relevant than ever. In his opening remarks, EU Ambassador Carl Hallergård highlighted that the European Union is itself evidence that conflicts and challenges can be overcome if we stand and work together in support of international law, multilateralism, human rights and justice. In exactly one month, on 9th June, some 400 million EU citizens go to elect a new European Parliament and renew the democratic mandate of our European institutions and our European leaders. First Vice President of the European Parliament, Mr Othmar Karas, reminded us in his intervention, in name of Team Europe, on the importance of the elections and of the democratic process. Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, Ms Leonore Gewessler highlighted the importance of the European Union and its strength in unity and diversity. The world economy's growth engine is losing steam, prompting questions about its medium-term prospects. This event features a presentation of chapter 3 from the latest IMF World Economic Outlook. This chapter delves into the drivers behind the growth decline and identifies a significant and widespread slowdown in total factor productivity as a key factor, partly driven by increased misallocation of capital and labor between firms within sectors. Demographic pressures and a slowdown in private capital formation further precipitated the growth slowdown. Absent policy action or technological advances, medium-term growth is projected to fall well below prepandemic levels. To bolster growth, urgent reforms are necessary to improve resource allocation to productive firms, boost labor force participation, and leverage artificial intelligence for productivity gains. Addressing these issues is critical, given the additional constraints high public debt and geoeconomic fragmentation may impose on future growth.

On October 10, 1980, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake destroyed the town of El Asnam (known today as Chlef) in Algeria, causing several thousands of casualties and leading to considerable economic losses. It was followed 3 hours later by a magnitude 6.3 aftershock, making it one of the largest and deadliest earthquakes ever recorded in Algeria. 23 years later, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the country again and caused devastating damage in five provinces in the north-central region. What would happen if a disaster of a similar magnitude hit the country today?  Unfortunately, disasters like these are far from rare in Algeria. Be it earthquakes, forest fires, or floods, Algeria has had its share of disasters over the years and has learned valuable lessons from them. The Algerian government estimates that annual spending over the past 15 years to respond to floods, earthquakes, and forest fires averages around USD 255 million (DZD 35,14 billion), with about 70% allocated to floods. Aware of the country’s growing disaster risks in the context of urbanization and climate change, the government has adopted numerous policies, regulations, and plans that demonstrate its commitment to better prepare for, manage, and mitigate the impacts of disasters. It is equally aware that the journey to disaster resilience is far from over and much remains to be done. As such, the National Delegation for Major Risks (DNRM), which coordinates disaster risk management initiatives in Algeria, has joined efforts with the World Bank to evaluate the country’s disaster risk management system and to identify priority actions that could help boost the country’s resilience to future climate and disaster risks. Together, with support from the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), they conducted a study titled “Diagnostic on Climate and Disaster Risk Management in Algeria,” which provides the country disaster and climate risk profile, estimates the macro-economic impacts of disasters, and highlights the advancements and challenges of Algeria’s current disaster risk management efforts. The report, developed from 2021 to 2023, represents the culmination of an extensive review of over 500 documents, a comprehensive multi-stakeholder consultation workshop conducted in 2021, and bilateral interviews held with the DNRM and all relevant stakeholders.

What story can Ukraine tell people in Latin America? Why is it important to have a conversation beyond “geopolitics” and focus on human experiences, on suffering and compassion, and on courage and resistance? The guest of this episode is Sergio Jaramillo, former High Commissioner for Peace of Colombia and founder of the campaign of solidarity with Ukraine ¡Aguanta Ucrania!, which is mobilising Latin American writers, musicians, human rights defenders, politicians and other voices in support of Ukraine’s struggle against the Russian invasion. We had this conversation on June 25th, 2023, in Kyiv. The next day, Sergio traveled to the warzone in Eastern Ukraine, together with his Colombian colleagues: writer Hector Abbad, and journalist Catalina Gomez. They were accompanied by a Ukrainian writer, Victoria Amelina. On June 27th, as they were sitting at the Ria Lounge restaurant in Kramatorsk, 40 kilometers from the frontline, it was struck by a Russian missile. Victoria Amelina was severely injured and succumbed to her wounds a few days later in a hospital in Dnipro on July 1st. Since that tragedy, we didn’t know how to publish our conversation, or whether we should publish it all. Emotionally it was tough. It took us several months to come back to it, but we asked Sergio to meet again, this time online, to tell me what happened in Kramatorsk on that day. We attached this excerpt to our conversation.
