The "Europaschule" Johann-Gutenberg-Schule Bremerhaven is an inclusive secondary school in the north of Bremerhaven. With approximately 700 pupils and around 80 teaching staff, it’s the largest school of its kind in the town of Bremerhaven. The JGS is one of three specialist school campuses in Bremerhaven providing inclusive education to pupils with sensory, physical, and developmental Special Educational Needs (SEN). The JGS also comprises of two “welcome classes” These are intensive German language preparatory classes, for migrant and refugee pupils upon their entry into the German school system. We also envisage establishing a third “welcome class” in the coming school term. The JGS prides itself in promoting STEM subjects by offering our pupils access to projects outside the classroom such as “Jugend forscht” (The young scientist and technology exhibition) and “Schüler experimentieren” (The junior young scientist and technology exhibition for pupils under the age of 15 years). Throughout the years, the JGS has developed and maintained a strong partnership with the University of Applied Sciences in Bremerhaven. In order to best meet the needs of our pupils in the subject areas of chemistry and physics, our pupils are taught based on their individual academic abilities from the age of fifteen. A further example of our innovative approach to meeting our pupil’s needs is the subject “Ernährung/Gesundheit/Ökologie” (EGÖ). This subject, which is unique to the JGS and one of its kind in Germany, is a synergy of the subject areas of nutrition, health, and environmental science. This project-based subject is offered to pupils aged twelve years and above. It is also innately intertwined with our mission of being a “Healthy School” (being a leader in the Healthy Schools Project). Since the beginning of the academic school year 2017/2018 the JGS has been promoting the theme “Europe” as a central part of both our school’s curriculum and ethos. The JGS has embarked upon it’s journey in becoming the first school in Bremerhaven to be bestowed with the prestigious “Europeschool” accreditation and succeeded in May 2019. The school year 2017 has also marked the commencement of the teaching staff at the JGS becoming acquainted with and gaining their first experiences of Erasmus+ (formerly known as Comenius) and eTwinning projects, which in turn, have been ground-breaking for our school. In order to continue with the advancement of a whole school approach to our involvement in such projects, our teaching staff requires access to further training and professional development ;

The Leibniz IPHT pursues the vision of using light to find solutions to questions and urgent problems in the areas of health, the environment, medicine and safety to make life safer, healthier and cleaner. This vision can be succinctly summarised by the slogan “Photonics for Life”. The Leibniz IPHT explores photonic and biophotonic processes and systems for issues and applications in medicine as well as life and environmental sciences and pharmacy. This research takes place in the three programme areas of Biophotonics, Fiber Optics and Photonic Detection based on key photonic technologies and other enabling technologies. The application-oriented area of Biophotonics is the connecting link for all research activities at the institute and aligns this focus of research towards optical health technologies. The institute’s mission is focussed on exploring and translating biophotonic methods and technologies, whose resolution, sensitivity, specificity, speed, accuracy and automation advance into new dimensions. This lays the foundation for faster and more precise medical diagnostics, for new therapies, for safer medications, for a new quality of food and environmental analysis as well as for innovative safety technology. The Leibniz IPHT is focussed on ensuring that its research activities are used in the public interest and for the benefit of society and it therefore actively promotes technology as well as knowledge transfer across the board. The institute, together with its partners, maps the entire process from the basic technological research through to the translation to customised solutions for various applications in line with the motto “From Ideas to Instruments”. The translation of the knowledge gained for the benefit of users is a fixed part of the institute’s mission. In both its research and transfer activities, the Leibniz IPHT utilises research infrastructure, recognised as “outstanding” by the German Council of Science, which it manages independently as well as together with partners, or makes available to partners, and ensures that it is kept up to date.

Our Business Priorities We believe in the importance of having a clear set of priorities to guide us through a turbulent and ever-changing environment. Our aim is to achieve long term sustainable growth and deliver value to all our stakeholders. Focus on patients We focus on developing innovative medicines and diagnostic tests that help patients live longer, better lives. Two-thirds of all diseases are either still not treated adequately or not treated at all. This medical need is enormous and better diagnostics and medicines can make a huge difference to the lives of millions of patients and their families. Excellence in science We strive to address unmet medical needs through excellence in science. Breakthroughs in science and technology increasingly allow us to find out precisely what is malfunctioning in the body and develop drugs to counter the problem. We focus on oncology, immunology, ophthalmology, infectious diseases and neuroscience, however we remain flexible and follow the science as new insights become available. Personalised Healthcare We combine our strengths in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics to better fit treatments to patients. When genetic differences can be identified, the efficacy and safety of medicines can be improved enormously. To this end we have a companion diagnostic strategy for every molecule we develop. Access to healthcare We aim to bring our medicines and diagnostic tests to as many people in need as possible. Every healthcare system comes with different challenges and we customise solutions for individual markets. We work with many different local partners to reduce barriers to accessing healthcare and establish innovative, sustainable ways to bring effective and affordable healthcare to patients. Great workplace We are committed to constantly strengthening and maintaining an excellent workplace where every person feels valued and respected and can grow to his or her full potential. Our people make our business. They discover, develop and manufacture our products and ensure they reach the patients who need them. We believe that the key to our success lies in our ability to attract, retain and motivate a highly skilled and diverse workforce. Sustainable value We run our business in a way that is ethical and aims to create long-term value for all stakeholders. We want to create value through developing medical solutions and we aim for as many people to benefit from them as possible. We believe that our success lies in our ability to develop strategies where both industry and society benefit in a sustainable way. Did you know that nature conversation and agriculture can go hand in hand? For example, to maintain the current state of protected open floodplain meadows in a national park, mowing is necessary. This produces grass. But the grass is not suitable for feeding animals or even for biogas plants, because the mowing takes place so late in the year, due to bird protection, that the grass has become very woody. The result is a large amount of unwanted grass that even the farmers who help cut it have no real use for. Sounds like a dilemma, but there is a solution. In this film you will learn about a collaboration between the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) in Potsdam and the National Park Association of the Lower Oder Valley in Brandenburg. They tackled the problem of unwanted grass in their area and developed an idea to turn it into a useful product, called biochar, with many applications. Biochar made from wood has been around for some time, and other organic materials have been experimented with as an input, so why not grass? Biochar is a soil amendment that improves water and nutrient retention and changes the microbial composition of the soil. In addition, the process of making biochar, called pyrolysis, generates large amounts of heat that could be used in a variety of ways. For more information about the realm of the EU-funded GO-GRASS project, and the processes at the German demo, visit our website (https://www.go-grass.eu/project/germany-biochar/) SOCIAL MEDIA ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Website: https://go-grass.eu https://twitter.com/gograsseu https://www.linkedin.com/company/go-grass https://www.instagram.com/gograsseu/ DISCLAIMER ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ The GO-GRASS project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N° 862674.

The NGA broadband expansion project in the city of Halle (Saale) held significant importance for the community, particularly given the presence of numerous universities and a substantial population of approximately 143,000 residents, including around 20,000 students. The area necessitated an upgrade in internet infrastructure to align with technological advancements and meet EU targets. Funding for the project was secured through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The implemented network has the capability to deliver speeds of up to 10 Gbps. As a result of this initiative, 1,900 households, 8 commercial areas, 724 businesses, and 59 schools have been successfully connected. This comprehensive expansion addresses the immediate needs of residents and contributes significantly to the city's technological preparedness and economic vitality. The Zeitenwende is Not Enough – Germany Needs a Grand Strategy

According to Dr Benjamin Tallis, the Zeitenwende, Germany’s security transformation, remains incomplete. On its current track, it is also dangerously inadequate. Despite the manufactured budgetary crisis, the Scholz government needs to finish the task it started. This requires the courage to be honest with the German people about the state of the world – and of Germany. To prepare for the future, however, the country’s leaders need to think bigger and define a vision for Germany and the world it wants to shape. This will be difficult as German leaders have long been reluctant to discuss, let alone set, grand strategy. But now, with the world in flux and the old ways no longer working, Berlin needs to clearly lay out what it wants—and how it plans to get it. About the Speaker: Dr Benjamin Tallis is a Senior Research Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) where he leads the ‘Action Group Zeitenwende’ as well as the DGAP Grand Strategy Group & co-hosts the podcast BerlinsideOut. He is the author of the concepts of Neo-Idealism and Team Power and of the books To Ukraine With Love: Essays on Russia’s War and Europe’s Future and Identities, Borderscapes, Orders: (Im)Mobility, (In)Security and Crisis in the EU and Ukraine. Benjamin Tallis worked on EU security missions in the Balkans and Ukraine and has researched, analysed, advised on and practiced European security for 20 years. What role do strategic investments play in Germany's economic resurgence?

Bruegel
As Europe's largest economy and the fourth-largest globally, Germany is making efforts to address impending labor shortages and boost its long-term economic growth. Policymakers are urged to prioritise skilled immigration, enhanced employment incentives, and the adoption of new capital goods. The German Council of Economic Experts (GCEE) projects a historic low in medium-term growth, emphasizing the need for strategies to counter the decline in labor volume through increased productivity growth. At this event we discussed the requirements for urgent policy decisions to create a conducive environment for capital and labor reallocation, with a focus on substantial investments in machinery, software and AI. Overcoming declining investment rates necessitates improvements in digital infrastructure and streamlined approval procedures. Strengthening both domestic and foreign direct investment will play a pivotal role in stabilising potential output growth, offering increased capacity for resource allocation and economic expansion.

11 Dec 2023
Berlin Institute of ...
In the BIH Lecture on December 1, 2023, Gordon Guyatt talked about the topic “How to Avoid Being Mislead by the Medical Literature”. Dr. Gordon Guyatt is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact, and the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. He is a general internist who has been heavily involved in clinical research. He has published over 1,500 papers in peer-reviewed journals; according to the Web of Science his work has been cited over 195,000 times. In this BIH Lecture Gordon Guyatt will talk about the potentially misleading findings and interpretation of findings in the medical literature. First, He presented evidence that funding of research influences the conclusions that authors draw from their data and suggest that clinicians should never read authors’ discussion of their own work but rather look to systematic reviews or guidelines from unconflicted sources. Second, he presented the problems with surrogate outcomes, and how clinicians must wait for trials that demonstrate benefits on patient-important outcomes before prescribing new treatments. Finally, he showed how randomized trials stopped early for benefit overestimate treatment effects, sometimes to a very large degree. The lecture was moderated by Ulrich Dirnagl (Head of BIH Quest Center). End-of-Year Review of German Politics
End-of-Year Review of German Politics
7 Dec 2023
IIEA
According to Derek Scally, 2023 was an eventful year in German politics with almost constant infighting between the parties in the incumbent coalition government, the introduction of the country's first National Security Strategy against the backdrop of escalating conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, several important state elections, the rapid rise of the Alternative für Deutschland, the official exit of Sahra Wagenknecht from Die Linke to form a new party, and a bombshell constitutional court ruling that has endangered the coalition’s fiscal and political foundations. In his address to the IIEA, Derek Scally breaks down the major events that took place in Berlin this past year as well as what to expect in 2024. About the Speaker: Derek Scally is a native Dubliner, who studied at Dublin City University and Humboldt University in Berlin. He has been Irish Times correspondent in Berlin since 2001. Covering politics, business and culture, he is a regular contributor to German news outlets, including Die Zeit weekly and Deutschlandfunk/WDR radio. The End of Germany’s China Illusion
The End of Germany’s China Illusion
6 Dec 2023
IIEA
The current trajectory of European policy towards China stands at a crucial juncture. In recent years, China has evolved from a long-term geopolitical challenge to a pivotal factor influencing the competitiveness of the European economy, the security of its citizens, and the EU's ability to fulfill its ambitious climate and digitalization goals. This shift poses a distinctive challenge for Germany, as its dependencies on the Chinese market are more pronounced compared to other EU member states. To address the challenges posed by today's China and establish a forward-looking vision, Berlin unveiled its first-ever China strategy in July 2023. In her address to the IIEA, Dr Janka Oertel, discusses how the implementation of this strategy is now essential at both the national level and as part of a broader European approach to China. About the Speaker: Dr Janka Oertel is director of the Asia programme and a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Oertel previously worked as a senior fellow in the Asia programme at the German Marshall Fund of the United States’ Berlin office, where she focused on transatlantic China policy including on emerging technologies, Chinese foreign policy, and security in east Asia. Dr Oertel has published widely on topics related to EU-China relations, US-China relations, security in the Asia-Pacific region, Chinese foreign policy, 5G and emerging technologies, as well as climate cooperation. Her new book The end of Germany’s China Illusion: How We Must Deal with Beijing’s Claim to Power was published in German by Piper in 2023. Recorded on the 6th of December 2023

German Foreign Policy in Flux: Assessing Berlin’s Leadership

Carnegie Europe
In 2023, Germany’s foreign policy evolved considerably. The country adopted its first national security strategy and took decisive action to align its positions more closely with those of its allies.Yet, much remains to be done to tackle the challenges ahead. The EU’s enlargement process, Russia’s continuing war against Ukraine, the West’s confrontation with China, and the growing influence of emerging powers in the Global South all require stronger German leadership on the European stage. To mark the launch of The Berlin Pulse, the Körber-Stiftung’s annual flagship report on foreign and security policy issues, Carnegie Europe invites you to a public event on Germany’s and the EU’s foreign policy trajectories. Julia Ganter will present the results of the public opinion survey conducted for the report. A panel discussion with Viola von Cramon-Taubadel and Pierre Vimont, moderated by Alexandra von Nahmen, will follow. There will be a light reception after the event. This event is hosted in cooperation with the Körber-Stiftung.

The expectation for companies to conduct HREDD is increasingly becoming mandated by legislators across the globe. Examples of such legislation include the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, which took effect on January 1, 2023, and the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, which is presently under negotiation, with an expected conclusion by 2024. Prevention and remediation will be critical for in-scope companies to successfully implement human rights and environmental due diligence processes and ensure compliance with these obligations. This webinar will focus on how to respond to human rights- and environment-related risks and violations with preventive and remedial measures, how to design risk- and violation-related measures, and how the German PST and amfori can provide support here. Participants will learn: - What does the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act expect from companies when it comes to prevention and remediation? - How can amfori’s and the German PST’s tools help businesses in implementing preventative and remedial action? - What preventative and remedial measures can companies take? Co-hosted by amfori and the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and supported by the German Governments’ Helpdesk on Business and Human Rights, this webinar is the sixth of a series on the obligations under the German Supply Chain Act and practical tools that can support companies in meeting their due diligence obligations.

Views from Munich: A confident display of innovation against a challenging backdrop

ACEA
After the traditional two-year hiatus, IAA Mobility is back in full force this year – and at a crucial turning point for the European automotive industry. ACEA Director General, Sigrid de Vries, took the opportunity to share her thoughts live from Munich. Once again, the best and brightest from across the global automotive supply chain provided IAA delegates with a first-hand look into their newest vehicle models and technology. All in all, a diverse, high-tech display revealing just how fast the industry is evolving.     This year’s edition was marked by the notable presence of next-generation all-electric vehicles and solutions – apt timing as the market share of battery-electric cars continues its ascent in Europe, now standing at around 13%.   As Ms de Vries explains in this video – despite a challenging context – European manufacturers presented a confident display of the industry's leadership in electrification, digitalisation, and circularity. “European manufacturers are investing heavily in new drivetrain technologies while phasing out combustion engines,” she stated. “They are doing so while having to cope with large administrative burdens, high energy costs, high inflation, and other constraints, which make Europe naturally less competitive compared to others in the world.” “What we need from European policy makers is that they support these efforts by building an industrial strategy that really enables innovation and manufacturing in Europe, and that also enables mobility for all.”

The German National Security Strategy: It All Depends on the Implementation
The German National Security Strategy: It All Depends on the Implementation
5 Sep 2023
IIEA
According to Dr Kaim, strategies are tricky things: flowery words describe the big picture and in the end, no one really knows what these words actually mean in practice. This is how many of the 76 pages of the first German National Security Strategy read. The Scholz government has not developed any fundamentally new guidelines for its foreign and security policy – it has written down what it has already planned and what is already reality. Much of the Strategy remains vague so that all parties of the coalition can rally behind it, with the Chancellor and four ministers using the presentation of the strategy to send a signal of unity. Nevertheless, the National Security Strategy expands the conception of security beyond just diplomacy and the Bundeswehr to also encompass electricity and water resources, pharmaceutical supplies, and the supply chains for raw materials that industry relies upon. But whether this is more than just words is something the German Government must now show in its implementation of the strategy. About the Speaker: Dr Markus Kaim is Senior Fellow in the International Security Research Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). He was Helmut Schmidt Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Washington 2019-2020. He has taught as a Visiting Scholar at the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at Carleton University, Ottawa, as DAAD Professor for German and European Studies at the University of Toronto, and as Adjunct Professor of Foreign Policy and International Relations at the University of Konstanz. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Zurich, at the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, and at the Bucerius Law School, Hamburg. Recorded on the 4th of September 2023

Where do European and Global South perspectives and expectations meet? Let’s discuss how we can best respond to armed conflicts and cyber-attacks in this age. Do we need more dialog on equal terms between the Global South and the North? Should we seek new strategies, e.g. feminist policy approaches? And what is the media’s role between documenting these processes, controlling strategic information and disinformation, and promoting free speech? MySmartLife is Hamburg's shortlisted entry to the Eurocities Awards. Hamburg’s entry is for MySmartLife, through which it established a foundation for an innovative urban transformation strategy to get rid of fossil fuels. The idea was to understand what prompts local people to become an active part of the energy supply system, focussing on energy generation based on renewable energy sources, efficient energy use, and buildings. The project saw a district heating system installed based on hydrogen and photo-voltaic solar panels with battery storage, all connected to tenant-lease agreements. Hamburg oversaw the retransfer of ownership of the grid from the private sector back to the public sector to develop a local, decentral energy supply system. MySmartLife was funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 and carried out with Nantes and Helsinki. -- With Eurocities, it’s all in our name: we connect Europe and cities. Lecture 30: Messenger RNA, a Game Changer in Biomedicine: Where Do We Stand From Now? In the BIH Lecture on April 21, 2023, Chantal Pichon (University of Orléans, France) spoke about the success of mRNA vaccines, which has been made possible by advances in mRNA structure development, manufacturing and delivery systems. This success opens up an avenue for the development of innovative mRNA-based formulations envisioning different therapeutic applications in immunotherapy, regenerative medicine and gene editing. Those formulations are quite challenging due to the peculiar nature of mRNA. Current knowledge regarding strategies that her and other have proposed to overcome multiple biological barriers and to obtain a targeted delivery was summarized. Issues that she have to face when conducting those strategies was discussed. Last, she presented challenges that have to be tackled to fully prove mRNA mettle for therapeutic applications. The lecture was moderated by Michael Schmück-Henneresse (BCRT). I feel that the Ukrainians who have come to Europe now have much to offer. They are so bright, progressive and good with technology. Their children love to go to school. They adjust very quickly and learn German so fast, it’s absolutely incredible. And the sense of community and mutual support Ukrainians seem to have as a default setting is just breathtaking.

Lecture 29: Cell Identity Conversion: Liver Regeneration and Cell Therapy In the BIH Lecture on March 31, 2023, Lijian Hui (Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai) talked about the aspirations of his lab to one day transplant human hepatocytes to cure liver or genetic diseases. Professor Hui studies molecular pathology of liver diseases, with the focus on cell identity conversion in liver regeneration and tumorigenesis. The Hui Lab demonstrated the conversion from fibroblasts into hepatocytes in vitro, thereby providing one of the first evidence of transdifferentiation in mammalian cells. His team is among the first to report cell identity conversion in liver injury and repair. Based on these findings, his team generates functional hepatocytes, hiHep and ProliHH, and corresponding innovative therapies like bioartificial liver devices and encapsulated liver organoids, are now being tested in clinics. Berlin Energy Transi...
Progressing climate change and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have plunged the world into the first truly global energy crisis. Even more than before, it has become clear that accelerating the global energy transition through decarbonization and expansion of renewable-energy capacities is the solution to both halve GHG emissions by 2030 and to alleviate the current energy crisis. Concomitantly, accelerating the renewable-energy rollout holds tremendous opportunities for profitable investments, job creation, environmental protection, public health, and economic growth. The chances are manifold and we want to act, but how can ambitions be translated into action? The session discusses several key levers to globally accelerate and sustain the energy transition: Decarbonizing industry, electrifying sectors, allocating space for renewable-energy production, harnessing supply chains, designing a sustainable industrial strategy, providing adequate financing, and extending transnational infrastructure (electricity grids, green-hydrogen pipelines and shipping routes). In addition, the relative importance of increasing energy efficiency will be discussed. Throughout the session, speakers will debate the role of international cooperation: Which institutions, multilateral or bilateral, most effectively enable the key levers of global energy transition? Are existing initiatives, such as the Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) or the G7 - Climate Club, the right instruments to translate ambition into action? Berlin Energy Transi...
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are highly interlinked and influence each other, to reach them intersectional approaches are needed. In regard to SDG7 (affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all) many dimensions need to be taken into account to achieve this goal. In turn, SDG7 influences other goals from job creation to economic development, from security concerns to the full empowerment of women. Women, as individuals and as core of their communities, constitute half of the end consumers of energy and are more severely impacted by climate change and the lack of clean energy access, but are largely left out of the equation when designing energy solutions and infrastructure. Therefore, energy solutions often don’t fit the needs and the local circumstances of communities. However, women are a key driver for the achievement of SDG7, participation of women and communities in the design of energy systems is needed in order to achieve 100% affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. What we need is to involve women and communities in the processes and to apply a gender lens to the design of energy systems and international cooperation – namely feminist foreign policy & feminist energy policy.
