Institute of High Pressure Physics (IHPP), also known as "Unipress", was founded in 1972 by Polish Academy of Sciences. The Institute is directed by Prof. Izabella Grzegory. For the outline of Unipress history please see "history of Unipress" page.Although the original focus of Unipress was on high-pressure studies of semiconductors, the present field of research activities also covers ceramics, HTc superconductors biological materials (high-pressure studies of protein folding, and high pressure food processing) and the plasticity of metals (hydroextrusion). The common axis of these studies is the use of high pressure, both as a research tool (a perturbation like temperature or magnetic field) and also as a technological method (high-pressure sintering, high-pressure growth of crystals).Nanotechnology is a keyword of a modern physics and material sciences. Unipress is involved in nano-studies not only by exploring classical low-dimensional systems like quantum wells and quantum dots but also by working intensively on materials composed of nanograins such as nanoceramics and nanopowders. High-pressure technology plays very important role in the process of sintering of nanopowders, enabling better control of grain size and uniformity, thus leading to the creation of a new generation of advanced materials.

The Institute of Physical Chemistry of the PAS was founded on March 19, 1955 by the resolution of the Presidium of the Government of the People's Republic of Poland. The scientific goals of the Institute were described as follows: "The activity of the Institute of Physical Chemistry covers research on current issues in the field of physical chemistry which are important from the point of view of the development of chemical sciences and demands of the national economy".       The Institute of Physical Chemistry was the first research institute dedicated to chemical sciences in Poland. During the first period of the existence of the Institute the main task was to prepare scientific staff that would be able to undertake fundamental research in the field of physical chemistry and to provide them with the appropriate laboratories and equipment. The development of the scientific staff was possible due to the fact that the scientists in the research institute were free from teaching duties obligatory in universities and therefore were able to concentrate their activity solely on the development of science.

NATO’s first-ever gaming tournament in Warsaw, Poland | #ProtectTheFuture #Shorts
15 Dec 2023
NATO
Full length video on this topic: https://youtu.be/MCT3ddLMOI8 NATO Experts joined Maciej Musiał, Polish gaming talent @setokani and @grabagra, alongside American streamers @ZeRoyalViking and @mischaCrossing and Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Marie-Doha Besancenot to play games including Among Us and Party Animals, and talk all things disinformation and information security. At the NATO Gaming Tournament in Warsaw, Poland, thousands of gamers from across the Alliance and around the world gathered to play online games and chat with experts from NATO Headquarters. From countering disinformation to reconciling differences in an organisation of diverse countries, the gamers and NATO staff discussed key challenges facing NATO – and where the Alliance is headed in the future. The vibe in the room is casual and relaxed. Young gamers from Warsaw mingle with artists, soldiers and NATO experts. In one corner, troops from NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Poland play vintage console games, including Street Fighter and Super Mario. In another area, gamers mash buttons on old arcade games like Pac-Man. But the main action is online. Thousands of viewers tune into Twitch livestreams hosted by online gamers from both sides of the Atlantic: GrabaGra and Seto in Poland, ZeRoyalViking and Mischascrossing in the United States. Also hosting the event is young Polish actor and Netflix star Maciej Musial, who has been partnering with NATO this year to help tell the Alliance’s story in his own words – and who was recognised at the event as a NATO Protect the Future champion. For Maciej, like for many others, the motivation to work with NATO is driven by both political values and a personal connection. “My grandfather was a Second World War soldier,” he says. “He was an amazing person – my best friend. He built that feeling of patriotism in me. He always was thanking everyone he met, who was either a doctor or a bus driver, and especially people who serve in the army. He was really thanking them for whatever they do, and he was always telling me… serve a good cause, if you find a place to do so.” So when Maciej received an offer to partner with NATO, he was eager to talk about the values of NATO from his own perspective. “He passed away a year ago, and after half a year, I received that invitation. And I didn’t think for a second. I immediately agreed. Because he always said that we are on a very specific place on the map, from a geopolitical perspective, in Poland. And we need strong friends. He was super happy when we joined NATO. And he always said that this is a really important alliance for us to be in. So being able to serve a little bit to the cause, it’s a great honour for me.” During the tournament, Maciej and the Twitch streamers played two popular online games with NATO staff. First, the gamers took on pandemic classic Among Us, where a group of astronauts have to sniff out the impostor in their space ship – and the impostor has to sabotage the life-support systems and wipe out the rest of the crew without getting caught. The game provided a great springboard for a discussion about disinformation, as the impostors help spread false narratives about their innocent crewmates in order to stir up suspicion and avoid capture. “How can we, as an Alliance and as common people, do any countermeasures [against disinformation]?” asked GrabaGra at one point. “How can we verify information?” “The same as we were doing before in the game – not believing people just because they say so,” said one of the NATO experts. “We were seeing in the game, someone said, ‘Oh, [the impostor] has been Red!’ And without any proof, people believed that it was Red… This is a bit how disinformation works, right? Someone said something randomly, and usually the person that is creating disinformation doesn’t want you to believe that it was them – they just want to confuse you and sow this question mark… So as citizens, the most important thing is to be informed, to check your sources, and to try not to trust random information just because you saw it online.” Story continues: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_219942.htm ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

Better protections for peaceful demonstrations after protest was banned An NGO organised a series of demonstrations in Warsaw, to highlight #discrimination against women and minorities. The gatherings were banned, after the city’s mayor said that he was against them because they included support for #LGBTI rights. The European court ruled that the ban violated the right to public assembly. This led to changes to Polish law to protect the right to protest. The Traversing European Coastlines (TREC) expedition is a flagship project of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). It travels along the European coastlines to explore the biodiversity and molecular adaptability of microbial communities as well as key selected organisms. In June 2023, TREC had a sampling stop in Sopot, Poland. It offered an opportunity to create connections with Polish scientists and citizens around the topics of planetary biology and ocean science. A scientific symposium on 15 June, organised by EMBL, the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) – the local partner institute, and the Committees of Molecular Cell Biology and Environmental and Evolutionary Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences brought together scientists to exchange knowledge and expertise on the science that forms part of the TREC expedition, as well as broader planetary biology research. In this video, Prof. Marek Konarzewski, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, talks about the benefits and perspectives of the cooperation between Poland and EMBL. Poland became EMBL’s 26th member state in 2019. In the same year, the Nencki-EMBL partnership for neural plasticity and brain disorders was established. Since then, the Polish and EMBL scientific communities have cooperated in different ways, including, for example, dedicated events in Poland. https://www.embl.org/news/lab-matters/connecting-scientists-engaging-citizens/ https://www.embl.org/about/info/trec/ https://www.embl.org/news/tag/poland/# Credits: Footage and video production: Dorota Badowska/EMBL © European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

transport Poland wins international road safety award as deaths fall by half in ten years
Poland wins international road safety award as deaths fall by half in ten years
19 Jun 2023
European Transport S...
The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has awarded its 2023 Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) Award to Poland for the first time. The country cut road deaths by 47% between 2012 and 2022, a rate only bettered by Lithuania, last year’s winner. The EU average reduction was 22%. Road mortality (the number of road deaths per inhabitant) stood at 50 per million in Poland last year, down from 93 per million in 2012. Mortality in 2022 was better than Italy (54 per million). Norway had the safest roads in Europe (21 per million) followed by Sweden (22 per million). The announcement coincides with new analysis published today by ETSC which shows road deaths in the EU rose by 4% last year, to 20,679. That number is still 9% lower than in 2019, the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic dramatically altered traffic volumes. However, ETSC is warning that a 17.2% decrease would have been needed since 2019 in order to stay on track to reach the EU and UN target of halving the number of road deaths by 2030. The ETSC panel of experts cited several key elements in the decision to award this year’s prize to Poland in addition to the substantial reduction in road deaths: ● Poland’s comprehensive National Road Safety Programme 2021-2030 which sets targets to cut both deaths and serious injuries by 50%; ● A large-scale four-year Safe Road Infrastructure Programme; ● Expansion of the speed camera and time-over-distance camera network; ● An increase in drink-driving enforcement checks of 19% on average each year between 2010 and 2019; ● Introduction of the “emergency corridor” system of enabling emergency vehicles to access collision sites on motorways. ETSC says speed limits and observed vehicle speeds in Poland are still too high. The 140 km/h maximum speed on motorways is the highest in the EU with the exception of Germany. ETSC has welcomed the decision to axe higher night-time speed limits in urban areas, which was replaced with a permanent 50 km/h limit in 2021. However, ETSC says Poland should also consider limiting speeds to 30 km/h on roads used by pedestrians and cyclists in urban areas. Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council said: “In ten years, Poland has greatly improved road safety, and set an example on how to take the issue seriously. There has been a genuine commitment to setting targets, improving infrastructure and boosting enforcement, all key factors in this impressive reduction. “For Europe as a whole, more work is needed, at the EU and national levels. The ‘road safety package’, announced by the European Commission in March, makes some positive changes to driver licensing and could improve cross-border enforcement. The new initiative to enable cross-border recognition of driving bans is also welcome. It’s now up to Member States and the European Parliament to ensure elements which could have a negative impact on road safety are removed and the package’s potential road safety benefits aren’t watered down on the often-treacherous road to becoming law. “At the national level, it is up to governments across Europe to strive by all means at their disposal to resume their annual reductions in numbers killed and seriously injured in line with the EU and UN targets for 2030.”

In Poland, there are currently only six registered energy cooperatives, two of these are operational. And although citizens are enthusiastic about community energy, bureaucracy and outdated energy grids result in many of these projects being put on hold. The video – New Energy – by EUKI project partners CEE Bankwatch Network and Polish Green Network showcases the pioneers who are paving the way for Polish energy communities. While some have already established energy cooperatives, others are just starting out. But in seeking financial support for their investments, they face an uphill task navigating the bureaucratic and legal obstacles that stand in their way.

Jacques Delors Institute
In December 2022, the Member States adopted the Hungarian recovery plan but conditioned the disbursement of funds to a series of rule-of law reforms. Similarly, the Polish government has undermined the independence of the judiciary since coming to power in 2015, and has been trying to backtrack on certain measures since the beginning of 2023 in the hope of releasing funds from the European recovery plan. Hungary has also 6.4 billion EU funds frozen for non-respect of rule-of-law principles and both countries have their cohesion funds suspended due to non-compliance with the Charter of fundamental rights. What is the situation today as regards to the access to these various EU funds by Hungary and Poland? What amounts are currently suspended by each mechanism and what conditions are imposed on each country to lift these suspensions? Eulalia Rubio, Senior Researcher at the Jacques Delors institute, will help us clarify this issue.

Security in Europe in a Time of War – the Polish perspective

IIEA
Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has drastically changed the European security equation, prompting many European countries to re-prioritise security and defence policy. Poland has been among the EU's largest contributors of support to Ukraine in its defence against Russia's unprovoked war of aggression. Furthermore, as one of Europe's top military spenders in terms of its GDP, Poland is playing a growing role in European security dynamics at both EU and NATO level. In his address to the IIEA, Adam Bugajski discusses the impact of Russia’s war on European security from the perspective of Poland.  About the Speaker: Adam Bugajski was appointed the Security Policy Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland in November 2019. In this position he deals with Polish security policy with regard to NATO, the EU, the OSCE and other international organisations as well as bilateral cooperation in security and defence. Prior to his current assignment, Adam Bugajski was Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN Office and the International Organisations in Vienna. His previous roles include Security Policy Director at the MFA (2011-2015), Deputy Director of the Department of Strategy and Foreign Policy Planning (2010-2011), and Deputy Permanent Representative of Poland to NATO (2008-2010). On 19 April 1943, Nazi soldiers and police stormed the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw with orders to round up the residents and send them to death camps. Living in appalling conditions, the Jewish civilians had nothing left to lose. Some 700 of them resisted, forcing the Nazis to retreat on the first day. Over the coming weeks, the Nazis intensified their attacks, burning the ghetto to the ground. Some 7,000 Jews were killed and another 7,000 were captured and murdered at the Treblinka death camp. In March 2022, during the theatre festival, two performances by Ukrainian students spoke about the atrocities of war. What stunned me was that they had started to stage these plays before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. That was a reminder that this war actually started earlier. When Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine it destroyed the peace of mind of each and every European. But it also united our nations against the common enemy and proved that we stand together. Poland opened its borders to our closest neighbour. But it was much more than that. 2 Mar 2023
ECFR
Russia’s devastating war against Ukraine on European soil has been raging for one year now. With tens of thousands of Ukrainian lives lost, the country is fighting for its independence and for our security. The war has fundamentally changed the way Europe sees itself, and the way others see Europe. It has put in doubt long-held beliefs about the composition and power dynamics within the global order, shattered illusions about Russia, and revised the axioms of energy policy for years to come. In times of great uncertainty, the only certainty is that there is no going back to the status quo ante. Going forward, several questions remain: How strong is the West’s resolve in a war that is essentially directed against its values and stability? Are we in a position to assist Ukraine in achieving victory, and what would such a victory entail? How will the dispute over the war shape relations within the Union and vis-á-vis the rest of the world? Consequences of Poland’s de facto abortion ban

European Parliament
As the backlash against women rights and gender equality continues in the EU, Parliament’s women’s rights and civil liberties committees are organising a public hearing on the consequences of Poland’s de facto ban on abortion. MEPs will discuss with relatives of the first known victim of the ban and representatives of NGOs defending sexual and reproductive health and rights. This hearing wants to raise public awareness about the worsening situation of women and girls, which is violating fundamental human rights in an EU country. The speakers include: - Barbara Skrobol, sister-in-law of Izabela Sajbor, the first known victim of the de facto abortion ban in Poland - Kamila Ferenc, Lawyer of the Foundation for Women and Family Planning FEDERA - Neil Datta, Secretary of the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights - Caroline Hickson, Regional Director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation European Network Comment on: Facebook http://www.facebook.com/europeanparliament Twitter https://twitter.com/Europarl_EN

Poland 2022: Energy Policy Review
10 May 2022
International Energy...
More info: https://www.iea.org/events/poland-2022-energy-policy-review The International Energy Agency regularly conducts in-depth peer reviews of the energy policies of its member countries. This process supports energy policy development and encourages the exchange of international best practices and experiences to help drive secure and affordable energy transitions. Poland’s energy policy aims to decarbonise its energy supply through expanding renewable energy, introducing nuclear energy, powering transportation through electricity, and increasing energy efficiency across the economy. A central aspect of Poland’s energy policy is reducing the reliance on coal, especially for electricity generation and heating buildings. There is a strong policy focus on energy security and ensuring a just transition that maintains affordable access to energy and protects vulnerable consumers while promoting economic growth. Poland has made notable progress on its energy transition. It has one of the fastest growing markets for distributed solar PV in Europe and it has developed a strong programme to drive offshore wind deployment. Poland has also taken important steps to improve energy security, such as diversifying energy imports away from Russia. However, the country’s energy mix is still dominated by fossil fuels. All sectors have considerable work ahead to meet targets for increasing the share of renewables, lowering energy demand and reducing emissions. In this report, the IEA provides a range of energy policy recommendations to help Poland smoothly manage the transition to an efficient and flexible low-carbon energy system.

9 Mar 2022
Migration Policy Centre
This webinar organised by the Migration Policy Centre at the EUI and the Centre of Migration Research at the University of Warsaw will analyse the effects of and responses to the large-scale displacement of refugees from Ukraine with a particular focus on Poland. By March 6th, more than 1.7 million people had been forced to flee Ukraine in the fastest refugee flow since World War Two. The numbers will grow considerably in the coming days and weeks. Of these refugees, over 1 million had arrived in Poland. There has been an extraordinary mobilisation by citizens across the EU to support Ukrainian refugees while the EU has agreed temporary protection measures for displaced Ukrainians. In this webinar organised by the Migration Policy Centre at the EUI and the Centre of Migration Research at the University of Warsaw we analyse both the effects of and responses to this large-scale displacement with a particular focus on Poland. Speakers will consider the situation at the Ukraine-Poland border; the current situation on-the-ground in Poland; implications for longer-term reception; and wider implications for European/EU approaches to asylum and refugees. Speakers: Marta Jaroszewicz, Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw Marta Pachocka, Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw Karolina Łukasiewicz, Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw Chair: Andrew Geddes, Migration Policy Centre, European University Institute

European Digital Rights
The EDRi network’s independent report by the Edinburgh International Justice Initiative (EIJI), “The Rise and Rise of Biometric Mass Surveillance in the EU”, reveals stark and compelling evidence of abusive facial recognition and other forms of biometric mass surveillance across the European Union (EU). This research shows that harmful biometric mass surveillance practices have become worryingly normalised by law enforcement, other public authorities and private companies in Germany and the Netherlands – with Poland starting to catch up. EDRi's Policy Advisor Ella Jakubowska explains the importance of this new evidence for civil society's call on the EU to ban all automated recognition of human features in publicly accessible spaces. -- We are European Digital Rights. We promote, protect and uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms in the digital environment.Stay tuned here https://twitter.com/edri

‘Granica czlowieczenstwa’ — Border of humanity – Poland fall 2021
17 Dec 2021
Migration Policy Centre
The Migration Working Group hosts this hybrid event about the current situation at the Polish external border. We started the fifth month of the permanent violation of international law regarding exiled people and asylum seekers by Polish authorities. Several hundred people remain in dramatic situations hidden in the frozen wild forest – families with children trying to survive in the extreme climatic conditions – there are about twenty official cases of death among refugees, including children and women. The border zone is forbidden (emergency law), and the information about exiled persons is only partial. Official media are pursuing a dehumanization campaign using propaganda tools; the authorities control journalists, who cannot contact people seeking help. We are facing a critical situation that has no precedence in the EU. This hybrid event will be composed of 3 parts: A short history and the legal context of the actual humanitarian crisis and emergency law; Field testimony by activists; A methodological and ethical reflection on the research practices related to the humanitarian crises. The session is organized by Fernand Braudel Fellow Izabela Wagner and includes the participation of Robert Rydzewski (anthropologist, push-back expert and activist), Ira Hnasevych (Polish organisation Legal Aid Center) and Maciej Krogel (EUI PhD Researcher, Law Department).
