Greening densely populated areas: strategy and funding - Lessons learned from a success story

This event, organized by Sintra Municipality, will bring together policy-makers at the European Union Level and regional level to debate how densely populated urban areas can become green.

Within the Framework of the European Week of Regions and Cities, the Mayor of SINTRA Municipality, Mr. Basílio Horta, would like to welcome you to the event Greening densely populates areas: Strategy and Funding. This event will bring together policy-makers at the European Union and regional levels to debate how densely populated urban areas can become green. Solutions, existing funding and the lessons learned from successful projects will be presented-

Sintra is one of the most densely populated areas in Portugal. Yet, through local effort and funding opportunities the municipality was able to regenerate the Jamor River and its surroundings, creating new green spaces and cycle tracks. In addition, Sintra has joined Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change and has already succeeded in attaining the goal of reducing emissions by 20% until 2020.

We know that population in urban centres will keep increasing and therefore it is urgent to build solutions that create sustainable spaces. This event will be an opportunity to share best practices and to think ahead future challenges.
