EU and Northeast Asia: re-thinking regional development strategies

The European Policy Centre (EPC) in cooperation with EastAsiaNet/University of Duisburg-Essen and the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung and with the kind support from the Haniel Stiftung, is pleased to invite you to a Policy Dialogue on EU and Northeast Asia: re-thinking regional development strategies, on Thursday 11 June 2009.Northeast Asia is one of the most dynamic economic regions of the world, but enhanced regional cooperation is required to ensure a full development of its underutilised potential. Risks in the region include uncertainties linked to North Korea, the fall-out of the global financial crisis and a lack of cooperation on environmental issues. Security issues regarding North Korea should also be embedded in a wider framework of regional development cooperation in the region. The EU, with its experience can offer relevant support to Northeast Asia, thereby also contributing to peaceful and sustainable development in the region. These and other issues will be discussed by Park Sunghoon Director at EU Research Center from Korea University, Hubert Pirker MEP, Chairman of the Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula, Jonathan Hatwell from the European Commission, Bernhard Seliger, Resident Representative of the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation office in Seoul. The dialogue will be opened and chaired by Shada Islam, EPC Senior Programme Executive, and Werner Pascha, Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies of Duisburg-Essen University.
