There are 4 billion people living at the bottom of the economic pyramid (BoP).  These poor people struggle to meet their basic needs and lack regular access to healthcare services and medicines.  Yet, they represent a €3.7 trillion global consumer market and are increasingly being seen as the customers of the future.  At the same time, donors are sending developing countries millions of euros of funding intended to procure life-saving medicines and supplies to help tackle huge national healthcare challenges.  Unfortunately, in many of these countries, these drugs and commodities do not reach patients in rural or remote areas due to badly functioning or inefficient drug and commodity supply chain management systems, as well as inadequate or absent healthcare service providers.  The problems facing the private sector and donors are often quite similar: key improvements in infrastructure, education and disease awareness are needed to systemically break down barriers to access to medicines.  In response, new projects, business models and technologies are being developed to simultaneously strengthen health systems and produce economic results. This seminar shall act as a Call to Action for companies, non-governmental organizations and policymakers.  The world stands at a tipping point.  New “disruptive innovations,” including cross-sector and multi-stakeholder partnership approaches and new technologies, can improve health delivery by addressing the health needs of low-income people living at the bottom of the pyramid and solving key infrastructure challenges.  However, stakeholders must take certain key steps to support and grow these innovations.
