Sign up for the best-selling NUJ training course ‘Pitch and Deal’ in Brussels.Designed for freelance journalists, staffers, writers, editors and photographers in all genres, this one-day role-playing course deals with the nitty-gritty of pitching your services to clients and negotiating the appropriate fees. The ‘how to’, the ‘what to do’ and the ‘what not to do’.Pitch and Deal has for years been the most popular in the NUJ training calendar. Now it is being held for the first time in Brussels. You will join other freelancers from France and the Netherlands as well as Belgium.Role-playing means that this is not passive teaching and absorbtion. You will be coached intensively in small numbers and gain feedback on best practice in such situations. Numbers are limited to 16 to ensure an effective learning experience.The course covers areas such as:Pitching yourself (for shift subbing) and your work.How to write the email, including the header, that gets read.Managing the follow-up phone call, what you need to say.Putting your service across in the face-to-face interview.How to price your work and negotiate appropriate fees.Some items to think about in licensing further use.The importance of getting it all down on paper (or email).The course leaders are London-based music journalist Phil Sutliffe, the course founder and one of the more influential members in the NUJ’s largest freelance branch, LFB (London Freelance Branch). And Louise Bolotin, an experienced journalist and media expert with expertise in much of the latest online and social media practices.Date: Saturday, 26th April 2014, 09.00. Cost: € 70 for NUJ members, € 140 for non-members, including sandwiches, tea/coffee and soft drinks – if you join the NUJ (€ 216 annually) and pay beforehand, you can pay the members’ rate, thereby saving € 70 from your first year’s subscription.
