Water reuse and resource efficiency for the European food chain

Cost-effective solutions to close cycles and save water, energy and raw materials.

Many natural resources are wasted during food production and processing due to lack of technology solutions and knowledge especially by producers and end-users. Still, resource efficiency can represent an economic opportunity for the food sector with the help of innovative research that takes into account the environmental impact of a food item from its production through to its processing and its eventual disposal. The  conference Water and resource efficiency for the European food chain will present ready-to-market technological solutions, practices and management strategies across crop cultivation, fresh food processing and waste valorization developed during the European funded RESFOOD project. These technologies have the concrete potential to impact on the European food sector in the next future. Solutions range from optimized irrigation management and improved methods for water reuse and nutrient recovery, through to new monitoring and disinfection techniques of fresh-cut food, and more environment-friendly extraction practices of valuable materials from food by-products. Tests in real case scenarios have been performed to assess their application for the European food industry. Feasibility and cost-effectiveness of these tools and their impact all along the food supply chain will be presented by their own developers to support knowledge transfer and further exploitation. The conference is supported by the Water Supply and Sanitation and Food for Life European platforms. Attendees will also learn about the vision of the  technology platforms on food and water and can participate to the launch of new research cooperation taking advantage of brokerage and networking opportunities addressing the upcoming H2020 calls. The conference addresses practitioners and researchers of the water sector and end users in the food chain, large companies and SME’s, interested in finding out about new technologies designing a sustainable food chain.
