Upgrading Europe’s grid to new high-capacity technologies: Best Paths workshop

The second dissemination workshop of the Best Paths project

The transition to a low carbon society by 2050, based on renewables and energy efficiency, will have a direct impact on the design and upgrade of European energy infrastructures, and especially on the electricity transmission network due to its critical role for the pan-European power system. To this end, the EU-funded Best Paths project explores new approaches for delivering affordable, reliable power in Europe, focusing in particular on the removal of barriers to the large-scale integration of electricity from renewable resources, and improving the interconnections of the entire power grid.

Best Paths seeks to evaluate the technical feasibility, costs, impacts and benefits of new high-capacity grid technologies through five large-scale demonstrations. The focus of the project is to deliver solutions to enable transition from High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) lines to HVDC grids, to upgrade and repower existing Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) parts of the network, and to integrate superconducting high power DC links within an AC meshed network.

The experts of the Best Paths project will meet in Berlin, Germany on the 26th of October 2016 to share their experiences, present the project’s mid-term status and receive feedback from stakeholders. Industry professionals, policy stakeholders, renewables sector actors, and citizens can engage in dialogue on innovative network technologies that will allow to anticipate the future transmission network development needs in line with the long term decarbonisation goals set at European level.

The workshop is free of charge; however please note that registration is required. To register please follow the link: https://bestpathsdisseminationworkshop.eventbrite.com

Registration closes on 20 October 2016
