Keynote speech by Christopher Jones, Deputy Director-General, DG ENERGY
A year has passed since the publication of the first “State of the Energy Union 2015” document, which summarised the achievements in the fields of climate change policy and common energy market that had been made since President Jean-Claude Juncker’s original Energy Union concept. In this evaluation paper, the European Commission labelled 2016 as the year of delivery. Were the plans of the European Commission too ambitious or did the year 2016 actually deliver results in terms of the establishment of an energy union within the single market?
The European Commission published a year-end energy package on 30 November, covering numerous interconnected fields such as energy efficiency, electricity design, new governance, renewables, and price competition. The panel discussion will analyse and evaluate the Commission’s actions in 2016, focusing on the internal energy market, one of the pillars of the European Energy Union concept that has a special significance from the Central Eastern European point of view. For this purpose, representatives of energy provider companies have been invited to share their views on the new regulatory framework.
