Marco AFFRONTE MEP invites you to a PHOTO EXHIBITION of Italian photographer Luca BRACALI and a COCKTAIL RECEPTION.
The Arctic melt is a wake-up call not a business opportunity
The PHOTO EXHIBITION will be held from 10 to 12 April in ASP 3rd Floor D. The COCKTAIL RECEPTION will take place on Tuesday 11 April at 17.30 in ASP 3D BAR FORUM.
Climate change effects and growing competition for access to the Arctic and its natural resources, and increasing economic activities, have brought risks to the region, including challenges to the environment and human security.
As a result of melting ice, new navigation routes will open and new fishing grounds and natural resources could lead to increased human activity and environmental challenges.
With climate change advancing rapidly, attention needs to be focused on how to devise and implement a conservation regime for resources in the Arctic, especially in waters that are increasingly accessible.
Our priority should be the preservation of what is still pristine nature up there and not the exploitation of new available resources. The waters under the ice cap have not been accessible for more than 800.000 years, and of course we must take the responsibility before it is too late to protect these sensitive ecosystems.
