This session will examine the European Commission’s proposal for a regulation on Privacy and Electronic Communications. Following the adoption of the new General Data Protection Regulation in May 2016, the Commission has moved forward with a new ambitious legislative project: a regulation that will set the future of privacy in the context of electronic communications. With this debate the Future Media Lounge will focus on the potential implications of the proposed e-privacy regulation on a free, independent, pluralistic and vibrant press across Europe. Its possible implications on the business model of press publishers and therefore the funding of trusted journalism will be debated as well as its potential impact on media diversity and access to journalistic content for European citizens. The session is co-organised with EDAA (the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance) and will therefore include a presentation of the cross-industry self-regulation initiative to enhance transparency, user choice and control over Online Behavioural Advertising.
