Chemistry for the Non-Chemist 19 March 2019

Gain a basic understanding of chemistry for your role

This introductory webinar in chemistry will provide you with a basic understanding of some of the most common physicochemical terms used in the prediction of likely exposure routes and hazardous effects; not only for human health but also for environmental fate and effects. What's more, expanding your knowledge of chemistry will help you with the identification of structural alerts, the use of appropriate read across and mechanisms of action.

In two hours, expert chemist and toxicologist Laura Robinson will teach you how to identify some important hazard properties, such as pH and its link with corrosivity, and important exposure routes, including the use of water solubility and Log Kow for predicting absorption, as well as environmental transport and ;

A unique feature of this training webinar is thanks to a strict limit of 30 delegates, you are encouraged to 'raise your hand' and put questions forward throughout the training - just as you would in a classroom environment.

Topics to be covered during the Chemistry for the Non-Chemist webinar include:

  • Categories of chemicals;
  • Chemical nomenclature (how chemicals are named);
  • Chemical properties influence of toxicity;
  • Using chemical structural alerts in predicting potential effects;
  • Using physicochemical properties to predict exposure routes;
  • Common chemical reactions, such as oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis and electrophilic reactions); and their relevance to human health and environmental effects;
  • Types of chemical bonding; and,
  • Intermolecular ;
