Modelling, managing and regulating emerging contaminants in surface waters

Sharing best practices for catchment-scale and waste-water treatment approaches to address emerging contaminants.

The Water Framework Directive has encouraged a range of interventions intended to reduce phosphorus input to water courses – both from diffuse and point ; Flexible approaches to water quality permitting are under development, while initiatives such as the Defra-led Catchment Based Approach () help to address phosphorus and other issues at catchment ; Phosphorus can originate from both wastewater and farming systems – but this is not necessarily the case with emerging contaminants, or hazards such as a AMR and microplastics.
