Title:
In, Out and Shake It all About: Brexit and the UK-Norway Comparison

The Global Europe Centre (Brussels School of International Studies) and the ARENA Centre for European Studies (University of Oslo) join forces to explore the issues of Brexit and the experience of Norway.

Professor Richard Whitman has compared the UK engagement with the EU to the Hokey Cokey - a series of movements in and out of the EU and wanting parts but not others - the relationship between Norway and the EU has its own different engagements, but how far can we compare Brexit with Norway's own 'No' vote in 1972 and 1994? Are any of the reasons for Norway's 'No' vote applicable to UK? Is the "Norway Model" the only model for the the UK? Can the UK follow Norway in being part of the European Economic Area (EEA) but not the EU? These any other questions will be explored by a panel of experts from BSIS and ARENA.

The discussions will be hosted by Professor Jeremy Carrette, Dean for Europe and Professor of Philosophy, Religion and Culture.

Panellists:

Professor John Erik Fossum, Professor of ARENA Centre for European Studies, University of Oslo

Professor Richard Whitman, Professor of Politics and International Relations, University of Kent

Dr Albena Azmanova, Reader in Political and Social Thought, University of Kent Brussels School of International Studies

Professor Amelia Hadfield, Head of Department of Politics, Director of the Centre for Britain and Europe (CBE), University of Surrey
