All companies with operations in the UK and/or the European Union particularly – not just those dealing in defense or dual-use items – need to be aware of the export controls and sanctions regulations that may apply. Those regulations, while similar to their US equivalents, also have significant differences. Businesses that understand the requirements and have effective processes to manage them will be best positioned to navigate the rules efficiently and avoid the penalties of non-compliance. You will gain a clear understanding of the basics of UK/EU export controls and sanctions, how the UK/EU rules differ from those of the US, pitfalls to avoid, and practical guidance on how to ensure compliance.
A former senior UK diplomat, Richard has 40+ years’ experience with negotiation and implementation of international and EU trade regulations, particularly export controls and sanctions, including heading the department in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office responsible for export controls and trade sanctions. On leaving the UK foreign service in 2014, he joined the London office of US law firm Dechert LLP as a Senior Director in the International Trade practice before setting up his own consultancy in 2019.
