Open day at VKI - von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics

On the occasion of a century of scientific research on its site, the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics will open its doors on Saturday 10th of September 2022 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

This will be a unique opportunity to discover a place normally closed to the public, which houses many state-of-the-art scientific facilities. Some of these are unique in the world, such as the Longshot, a gust wind tunnel capable of simulating hypersonic flow conditions of up to 14 times the speed of sound, and the Plasmatron, which reproduces the extreme thermal conditions encountered when a spacecraft re-enters the atmosphere.

Visitors will be guided in small groups through this maze of wind tunnels and laboratories where, through fun experiments, they will try to find concrete answers to questions they have probably already asked themselves, such as: "What does an earthquake feel like? or "How does an aircraft engine work? or "Why does a shuttle overheat during re-entry into the atmosphere?”

Children aged 8 and above are welcome and will be able to discover the world of aerodynamics through experiments adapted to their age.

Guided tours will be given in English, Dutch or French.

To visit the Institute, you will need to bring your identity card and / or passport. We reserve the right to refuse you entry in case your aforementioned documents are not presented.
