The forum is part of the Transition Opportunities (TOP) project, co-funded by the European Union, which strives to promote the contribution of EU cohesion policy, Just Transition Fund, and Recovery Plan for Europe to ensure smooth and just transition to a climate-neutral economy of the regions that will be most affected by the green transformation.

The conference will provide up-to-date information on the steps and further opportunities for economic development in the three coal-mining regions of Bulgaria. In parallel, it will foster interregional cooperation with other countries that have coal regions in transition.

Furthermore, the event aims to contribute more concrete knowledge about the investment opportunities in the coal regions as well as the ongoing changes in the energy markets at the European and regional levels. These aspects will be discussed inter alia along with recent political and policy changes and challenges throughout Europe linked to the green transition process. In addition, a specific focus will be placed on the region of South East Europe.

The event will also facilitate the sharing of experiences and the discussion of opportunities for cooperation and future work in the framework of calls for EU interregional cooperation. In that regard, objectives and instruments of the Cohesion Policy for strengthening European territorial cooperation will be presented.
