About usStudio Europa Maastricht is a centre of expertise for Europe-related debate and research.Founded in 2018 and supported by the partners of the Maastricht, Working on Europe programme: Maastricht University, the Province of Limburg and the City of Maastricht. Together we aim to position Maastricht, the capital of Limburg as a meeting place for citizen dialogue and debate and establish a centre of excellence for research on Europe and European integration.Our team examines, explores, and engages. We are #WorkingonEurope.Our organisation consists of three pillars:Academic researchWe are a leading centre for multi-disciplinary Europe-focused research with societal impact.European heritageWe bring the legacy of the Maastricht Treaty, since 2018 proud holder of the European Heritage Label, to life.Public debateWe stimulate active, critical debate with engagement at its core and capture and share the stories of Europe. Why Maastricht?Since 1992 the city has been inextricably linked with Europe as the Maastricht Treaty sealed Europeans’ commitment to develop our collective identity. The signing of this milestone for European integration started a great, dynamic experiment, which carries on to this day.While the Treaty may be the city’s claim to fame, Maastricht’s European character is more than just symbolic. The city is the place for Europeans to come together to work on that experiment. To think, debate and discuss Europe.This is not a coincidence. Maastricht has always been a city defined by (crossing) borders. For centuries it’s been a melting pot of cultures where different peoples meet, trade, cooperate and, from time to time, wholeheartedly disagree.To this day, it remains a forum for culture and commerce, and the impact of the surrounding Dutch-, French- and German-speaking industrial and cultural hubs is felt everywhere. At work, in leisure time and in education. This confluence continually gives rise to new opportunities, new questions and new ideas.

Trade4SD is a 4-year project devoted to research on a topic which is high on the domestic as well as multilateral, EU and bilateral trade policy agenda. The ambition of the project is to explore and foster the positive linkages between trade and sustainable development, to provide policy recommendations for the creation of new opportunities for agents involved in the global, regional and national agri-food value chains, and to define conditions for sustainable livelihoods of farm producers in the EU and developing partner countries. Trade is a central factor in shaping global, regional and local development. Increased trade, empowered by the growth of Global Value Chains (GVCs), has boosted productivity and incomes in many ;Trade can also contribute to food security, improved nutrition through diversification of food baskets and give poor farmers access to high value markets. However, if not fairly regulated, trade might generate increases in inequality and negative impacts on working conditions in developing countries, and compromise the environment. According to the recent World Bank Report (2020a), beyond policies to facilitate participation in Global Value Chains directly, complementary policies, such as labour regulations and environmental protection measures, are needed to share their benefits and attenuate any costs. Trade policy has an important part to play in achieving the SDGs.

The Centre Condorcet is a think tank which aims to stimulate Enlightenment core values of reason and humanism, inspired by one of its most innovative thinkers, Nicolas de Condorcet. The principal common project in Europe today, the European Union, may be in need of deep conceptual and operational innovation. The mantra that there are no alternative trajectories for managing common interests cannot be taken at face ; Many leading political and social scientists and economists have remarked that its dominant political and economic paradigms jeopardize the necessary social compromises in its societies. The fundamental consensus forged in the 1950s is fragmenting, a new one does not seem in the ; Indicative are the deepening inequalities within countries and between them, threats to the essence of democracy and civic rights, uncontrolled technological advances, neo-nationalism and eurocentrism, and alienation of large groups of citizens. At the end of the 18th century, Europe too was faced with deep social and economic shifts while political stagnation prevented adaptation. Then like now they are systemic problems which demand critical thinking, creativity and serendipity, and courage, as shown by ;      The Centre Condorcet has a double purpose: It will seek more attention for those thinkers who raise questions which may require the dominant paradigms to be re-evaluated. The Polish poet and diplomat Czeslaw Milosz analysed in the 1950s how European intellectuals became captive to system thinking and admiration of communism; others voiced similar concerns. It serves as a general warning about all –isms, to keep an open and critical, evidence-based mind. Why should centralising Europeanism and globalism, with their benefits, but equally with collateral effects, be an exception? The voices of contemporary intellectuals should be heard and enrich current debates about future social and economic arrangements in Europe.        It will serve as the platform for the independent tripartite High Level Groups for Policy Innovation. One such approach of re-evaluation started when the first group was launched by the EU’s Council Presidency in December 2011. Since then, they have developed into an original model for brainstorming about paradigm shifts in public policy. Their use of the Socratic method and the mutual belief of its participants in a European Common Good stimulate creativity and serendipity. Their independence allows them to engineer truly new ideas, free of formal and legal constraints, and to produce reports which can inspire a new generation of policies to deal more effectively with disruptive challenges that the countries and their Union are facing. Since the beginning, they have been served voluntarily by EPPA; ten years later, their expansion has led to setting-up a new home in the Centre ;

The Political Festival of Europe is a yearly democracy festival that aims to gather citizens of Europe over the course of four days to discuss politics and embrace Europe’s rich history and cultural heritage. The Political Festival of Europe takes place in a town called Mariager – also known as the city of roses – an old, idyllic medieval town with crooked houses, cobblestoned streets and timber framed houses. With a modest population of just over 2,500 inhabitants, Mariager town will soon become the place where European democracy will come to life gathering hundreds of thousands of Europeans who want in on the future of Europe. Our mission is to be a place of: Courage – where we dare discuss the future of Europe “Peoplelization” – where we build communities as well as celebrate, showcase, and spread insights to local, regional, and national cultures Inspiration – where we establish debates, dialogues, hearings, and citizen involvement Accessibility – where we create an informal environment for citizens, politicians, and business leaders to meet Anchoring – where we anchor and raise the importance of our democracy for the future of Europe at a local level  In line with our missions, our vision is to “peoplelize” European politics and become a platform, where we strengthen democracy and unity in Europe. We aspire to become the political Olympic Games, where everyone has the possibility of participating in creating the future of Europe. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us all the more reason to create a platform, where we together can discuss European politics and its future. A platform, where people actively can get involved in developing European democracy. The inspiration behind Political Festival of Europe comes from the Nordic tradition of folkemøder –  a concept we want to take to the next level and raise from national settings to a pan-European setting in order to discuss matters that influence everyone in Europe. What is a Folkemøde?  The Danish tradition of Folkemøde [Folk – people; møde – meeting] is a public meeting that dates back to 1839. It is a political event that gathers people with different political views and positions in the interest of democracy. A Folkemøde takes form of informal discussions and speeches across opinions and hierarchy that strengthens active involvement of all participants – every one has a say, every one is heard. After the concept faded away in the 1940s, neighboring Sweden’s own form of folkemøde – Almedalsveckan introduced in 1968 – became the inspiration and groundwork for Denmark to revive the concept on the island of Bornholm in 2011 with their very own annual Folkemøde. It took on popularity fairly fast and has generated thousands of national visitors ever since. So far held at national levels, we aim to expand this concept to the whole of Europe. Here is why. What the purpose of a Folkemøde? The Danish model of Folkemøde is the cornerstone for democracy and pays tribute to the community. The foundation of a Folkemøde lies in dismantling barriers between citizens, politicians and decision-makers in order to bring politics closer to the people and to make society a better place for everybody.  The aim is to lead discussions about how to improve the future of the society and have citizens participate in shaping change. A “folkemøde” aims to: o   Inspire and challenge political views and visions o   Let people meet and listen to politicians they voted for o   Let people have a say and be heard o   Increase trust between citizens and decision-makers and hold politicians accountable o   “Peoplelize”, ;build a community where culture is showcased and celebrated o   Facilitate meaningful debates and anchor them in the political agenda  As cultural heritage is also celebrated in a Folkemøde, entertainment and good food are an integral part of such an event. Hence, at the Political Festival of Europe, you will be able to find arts and crafts, music and gastronomy, alongside the political debates, speeches, workshops, hearings etc.
