The Smart Villages Initiative is based in Cambridge / Oxford, UK and includes a team of researchers and experts who are evaluating ways to achieve holistic, integrated development in rural villages in developing countries. We encourage the transfer of knowledge and experience between different developing regions. Our work has been especially focused on how sustainable energy can be a catalyst and enabler for development, including village-level communication technology, healthcare / m-health, democratic participation, education, livelihoods, clean water / sanitation, and gender equality.
Through a series of international workshops and follow-up activities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, our aim over the past three years has been to provide policymakers, donors, entrepreneurs, researchers, media and other stakeholders with new insights into the challenges of achieving rural development through the use of sustainable energy.
