Trade4SD is a 4-year project devoted to research on a topic which is high on the domestic as well as multilateral, EU and bilateral trade policy agenda. The ambition of the project is to explore and foster the positive linkages between trade and sustainable development, to provide policy recommendations for the creation of new opportunities for agents involved in the global, regional and national agri-food value chains, and to define conditions for sustainable livelihoods of farm producers in the EU and developing partner countries. Trade is a central factor in shaping global, regional and local development. Increased trade, empowered by the growth of Global Value Chains (GVCs), has boosted productivity and incomes in many ;Trade can also contribute to food security, improved nutrition through diversification of food baskets and give poor farmers access to high value markets. However, if not fairly regulated, trade might generate increases in inequality and negative impacts on working conditions in developing countries, and compromise the environment. According to the recent World Bank Report (2020a), beyond policies to facilitate participation in Global Value Chains directly, complementary policies, such as labour regulations and environmental protection measures, are needed to share their benefits and attenuate any costs. Trade policy has an important part to play in achieving the SDGs.

Whilst it is possible to predict how much energy can be produced from fossil fuel sources, this is not the case with renewable energy sources and yet energy companies need to know future energy production to trade competitively. In hydropower for instance, generators and utilities typically face up to 30% error when forecasting renewable energy output due to poor data. In comparison, offshore wind project stakeholders need reliable site assessment information in order to assess investment bankability, as well as infrastructure sustainability and climate ;Through a unique combination of satellite imagery with geospatial datasets, AI and cutting-edge machine learning algorithms, Wegaw offers the underlying data driven climate tech solution that supports the energy sectors’ digital transition without the need for additional hardware ;Wegaw empowers industry stakeholders with highly accurate environmental insights that would enable crucial CO2 reductions and bolster national energy security initiatives for a carbon-neutral renewable energy future. Moreover, the energy industry can further close the gap on billions in lost potential revenue caused by productivity and trading edge loss whilst reducing world-wide fossil fuel dependence. The near real-time, cost-effective insights that Wegaw creates can optimize clean energy production efficiencies, boost trading capabilities, and support identification and assessment of new project site locations.By monitoring key environmental variables, such as soil moisture, wave height, snow water equivalent, hydrological flow and wind speed, Wegaw aims to become a go-to data partner for utilities, governments, energy generators, agencies and communities ;Furthermore, by subscribing to Wegaw’s reliable, tailored and scalable datasets, progressive industry innovators are working towards numerous UN SDGs whilst strengthening the ecosystem's digital transition journey.
