EU Union Civil Protection Mechanism

Disasters can strike anywhere, anytime. The human, environmental and economic impact of disasters, whether natural or man made, can be considerable. According to one estimate, between 1994 and 2013 there were 6 873 natural disasters worldwide, which claimed 1.35 million lives — or about 68 000 on average annually 1 . A UN estimate puts the economic loss resulting from disasters in the period 2005 to 2015 at 1.3 trillion US dollars.
