Functionalized optical fiber tips for ultra-short range interconnections

Miniaturization is one of the big trends that we can identify across many scientific and technological research domains. This is also the case in the world of optics and photonics, where a reduction of the footprint and cost of components is often desired. One particular application area is that of optical interconnections. Single-mode optical fibers are widely used in optical communication and sensor systems for their small size, immunity to electromagnetic interference, low signal loss and high capacity. At the input and output of such fibers, different types of optical components can be used to guide the light into the right direction as efficiently as possible. Examples of such components that have been developed are gratings (to split different wavelengths into different directions, used in wavelength division multiplexing systems), couplers (to couple or split the light to other fibers and components), lensed components (to focus or collimate the light beam for better free-space propagation and coupling performance), tapered components (to expand or decrease the beam size) and many more. Mostly, these components are made from several discrete optical elements put together to obtain the desired functionality. In recent years however, a 3D direct laser writing fabrication technology based on two-photon polymerization (2PP) is gaining interest due to the combination of full 3D design freedom and sub-micrometer resolution [1]. In this work, we present the design, direct laser fabrication, and proof-of-concept demonstration of various optical elements such as mode conversion tapers, micro-lenses, and diffractive elements directly integrated on the fiber tip, resulting in extremely compact components with high optical performance for short-range optical interconnections. By Koen VanMol, Post-doctoral researcher, Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT), Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Flanders Make at the 3rd edition of the Optical Wireless Communication Conference. https://owcc.jakajima.eu/previous-editions/ #owcc #jakajimatv

As part of our Talking Geopolitical Podcast Series, we had the privilege to talk to Mr. Patrick Nijs, former Belgian Ambassador and former Consul General to China. We discussed the current state of the US-China tensions, with a focus on the role the EU is playing to resolve these tensions. Our conversation centered around the potential role the EU can have in the US-China rivalry. Considering the EU’s concerns regarding certain policy decisions of the US and China in areas such as trade, security, and human rights, we further talked about how the EU might balance its desire to promote global cooperation and stability with its strategic interests and priorities. Additionally, we touched upon the importance of the idea of interpolarity for the EU’s mediating efforts. Finally, we also explored how the EU can promote dialogue and cooperation through the UN.

The Spring Budget was a key moment for the life sciences sector following the R&D tax relief rate cut announced at the November 17 Autumn Statement. The Chancellor has since written to BIA stating that he sees “merit” in the case for further support for life science SMEs impacted by the cut, but the demands on the UK’s public finances leave significant uncertainty in what can be delivered.   Hear from BIA’s team that has been campaigning on behalf of the sector about their analysis of any further support delivered, as well as the wider reforms to the R&D tax relief regime underway.

Paratroopers from Italy, Germany and the US drop side-by-side in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains in northern Italy. US paratroopers deployed in Italy recently conducted training jumps with their Allied German and Italian counterparts. About 800 paratroopers from the US Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade, the Italian Army’s 4th Alpini Paratroopers Regiment and the German Army’s 26th Airborne Regiment performed several jumps over a drop zone in northern Italy. These airborne operations saw paratroopers exiting the US Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft. Following jump operations, Allied soldiers exchanged jump wings and airborne badges belonging to their country, a cherished tradition among paratroopers. Airborne operations are a demanding discipline, requiring constant training to verify skill and safety. Jumping alongside NATO Allies allows paratroopers to familiarise themselves with how they operate with other Allied soldiers. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬SUBSCRIBE to this channel http://bit.ly/NATOsubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO News http://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribeSUBSCRIBE to NATO History http://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribeConnect with NATO online:Visit the Official NATO Homepage: http://bit.ly/NATOhomepageReceive NATO updates via email: http://bit.ly/NATOemailsFind NATO on FACEBOOK: http://bit.ly/NATOfacebookFollow @NATO on TWITTER: http://bit.ly/NATOtwitterFollow NATO on Instagram: http://bit.ly/NATOinstagramFind NATO on LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/NATOlinkedinFind NATO on Flickr: http://bit.ly/NATOflickr#NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO

#WorldCancerDay #EUCancerPlan #euCancerImaging #AI #Data #digitaleu #HPC The European Cancer Imaging Initiative will unlock the power of imaging and Artificial Intelligence for the benefit of cancer patients, clinicians and researchers. The European Cancer Imaging Initiative is one of the flagships of the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP). One of the objectives of the Plan is to make the most of the potential of data and digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) or High-Performance Computing (HPC) to combat cancer. The aim of the European Cancer Imaging Initiative is to foster innovation and deployment of digital technologies in cancer treatment and care, to achieve more precise and faster clinical decision-making, diagnostics, treatments and predictive medicine for cancer patients. The Initiative will showcase how medical images can be accessed, used and pooled, while ensuring a high level of ethics, trust, security and personal data protection in full compliance with EU values and rules. It will make large amounts of cancer images and linked clinical data easily accessible to European clinicians, researchers and innovators in line with the European data strategy and supporting the goals of the European Health Data Space.

Red Lane, Green Lane, Other: Implications of the Windsor Framework
Red Lane, Green Lane, Other: Implications of the Windsor Framework
16 Mar 2023
IIEA
On Monday, 27 February 2023, the UK Government and the European Commission announced the new Windsor Framework, which aims to facilitate trade between Northern Ireland and Great Britain while maintaining the region’s access to the European single market, a situation which, according to the UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, could make Northern Ireland “the world’s most exciting economic zone.”  The Windsor Framework may also mark the beginning of a new phase in UK-EU relations, and, if accepted by all parties, could put an end to the current political impasse in Northern Ireland. In this keynote address to the IIEA, Tony Connelly discusses what the Windsor Framework means for Northern Ireland and for future UK-EU relations.  About the Speaker: Tony Connelly is Europe Editor for RTÉ News. He has reported extensively on Brexit, and has been covering European affairs since 2001, most recently reporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Mr Connelly is the recipient of two ESB National Media awards, a European Journalism Award and a New York Festivals radio award. He was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in journalism award by UCD Smurfit Graduate School and an Irish Law Society award for his coverage of the Brexit negotiations. Mr Connelly is the author of Brexit and Ireland. Recorded on the 15th of March 2023
