Tuesday, 29 October 2024, 15:00-16:00 (CET) Health is central to people’s lives yet an under-appreciated influence on politics. Poor health can limit full participation in the democratic process and negative experiences with public institutions through ill health can undermine trust in the health system, but also government and democracy more broadly. Health systems can play an important role in ensuring people are not ‘left behind’ and policies that protect and promote the well-being of the public are also part of rebuilding trust in public institutions and the democratic process. But what are these policies? How can we ensure the opinions of people with poor health are heard? Join us to find out! Speakers: Nolan M. AHDB Red Meat Summer Performance Review | AHDB Webinar
Yesterday

This analysis of red meat's performance within retail and the usage of red meat within the home was carried out to better inform the industry on how this summer impacted red meat demand, with a focus on BBQ occasions as well. There were 3 key results: - The correlation between sunshine and the number of BBQ’s meant a drop in BBQ occasions this summer but consumers were still happy to eat Meat, Fish and Poultry within the home as demand grew year-on-year despite the poor weather. - There was a divergence in the market as with cost-of-living concerns easing slightly, some consumers had a bit more money to spend and purchased more premium proteins and products as a result. But with cost-of-living concerns not disappearing completely, cheaper proteins and products also performed well. So consumers are moving away from thinking about value-for-money just in terms of price, towards including quality perceptions in their decision-making, as well as purchasing products for special occasions more. - To ensure red meat performs well over summer we need to move away from thinking about summer occasions solely in terms of weather and its link to BBQ occasions. Instead, the industry needs to ensure that inspiration to cook red meat focuses on cooking methods beyond the BBQ to ensure ensure awareness and confidence to cook indoors if plans have to change. European Investment Bank
The president of the European Investment Bank Nadia Calviño was in Barcelona this week, at the Union for the Mediterranean Forum, where she shared the important projects we are financing in this region, from water to transport and energy. We also had the opportunity to see the result of our investments on the ground, visiting with the president of the Catalan government and the Mayor of Barcelona two flagship projects financed by the EIB Group to improve water infrastructure and provide affordable housing. Moving to Madrid we presented the progress of the European Tech Champions Initiative, our successful fund of funds to mobilise investments to scale up innovative startups and nurture Europe’s venture capital ecosystem. We had very productive meetings with Spanish ministers of Economy, Housing and Digitalisation, as well as with the president of the Spanish national promotional bank, ICO, to reinforce our cooperation in supporting European priorities, from innovation to housing and, of course, the green transition. Terrible damage and loss caused by extreme weather events in Spain remind us of the urgent need to invest in adaptation to climate change. It is not only the right, but also the smart thing to do. Every dollar invested in prevention and resilience saves five to seven in damage and repair. In this regard we would like to highlight three new projects announced this week. To join up forces with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature to help Europe adapt to global warming and protect biodiversity, for the Salto de Chira pumped hydroelectric plant in Canary Islands, and finally for the world’s first artificial energy island off the Belgian coast. --------------------------------- Visit our website: https://www.eib.org Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EuropeanInvestmentBank Twitter: https://twitter.com/eib LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-investment-bank Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/europeaninvestmentbank/

'Check and Balances on US Presidents: Legal and Political Perspectives' The forthcoming presidential election in the United States has been described as among the most consequential in the republic’s 248-year history. In this edition of IIEA Insights, Lecturer in Law at University of Galway, Larry Donnelly, discusses how political power is diffused in the US and assess how strong checks and balances are on the exercise of executive power. The roles of congress, the supreme court, and the states will be considered in how presidential power is constrained, along with how independent government agencies and interest groups of all kinds influence executive decision-making. Larry Donnelly is a native of Boston and citizen of both the US and Ireland. He is the founder and director of the Clinical Legal Education programme at the University of Galway’s School of Law. He has been published widely in academic legal journals, including on comparative law. Our planet must remain livable and the financial industry plays a key role in securing its future: financial flows must be re-oriented from environmentally harmful activities to a sustainable economy. Financial regulation, alongside other policies, should ensure private finance becomes an enabler of sustainable transition. This requires transparency and corporate governance reforms to ensure real-world outcomes and prevent greenwashing as well as robust risk management and adequate capital levels of financial institutions to make them resilient, ensure a “safe transition” and avoid a climate-driven financial crisis. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finance Watch is a European NGO founded in reaction to the last financial crisis, when policymakers realised that there was no counter-power to the lobby of finance. The annual OII Halloween Lecture by Prof Joss Wright. The nights grow ever closer. Streetlights flicker, shrouded in the mists, striving to pierce the gloom. The warm certainties of summer give way to the cold, dark ambiguities of autumn. Rumour, myth, and legend rise, primeval, from the shadowed recesses of our collective consciousness, undermining our faith in the fragile congruities that structure our lives. As summer surrenders to the inexorable tread of autumn, our resolve falters against the unknown horrors residing in the tenebrous peripheries of the world. As scientists, as scholars, our duty is to cling resolutely to our methods and our ideals in the face of encroaching darkness. Our tools may seem fragile in the face of the seething irrationality of the night, but we are called to peer, however tremulously, wherever our inquiries may lead us. Lights streak across the sky. Stories are woven of twisted faces in the darkness, half-glimpsed creatures in ancient forests, strange encounters in the wilderness. From the earliest stirrings of humanity, to the patterns of complex arcana that silently control our lives today, folklore and legend have long reported phenomena that rebel against mundane description or understanding. As our technologies evolve, and our ability to collate, scrutinise, and manipulate data spiral beyond all restraint, we are ever more capable, if not indeed obliged, to bring the lens of science to bear on these harrowing mysteries. To embrace this dark season, you are invited to the annual Oxford Internet Institute Halloween Lecture. This year we will pursue one of the world’s most notorious cryptozoological phenomena, investigating over a century of data regarding sightings of the Sasquatch, or Bigfoot, of North America. In which regions are these cryptic precursors of humanity most commonly observed? What factors, whether environmental or physical, create habitats most suitable for the Sasquatch to thrive, hidden from the encroaching pressures of humanity? Where, were we bold enough to look, might we seek other populations of these elusive creatures? In this lecture we will examine some of the history surrounding sightings of Bigfoot, and related cryptids. We will impetuously apply statistical methods to derive underlying patterns from reported sightings, and heedlessly strive to uncover their meaning and implications. What can we learn from the accumulated data about the habits of cryptic species living on the fringes of our world? Is the beast, as ever, closer to us than we wish to believe? The lecture will be a light-hearted presentation lasting around thirty minutes, openly welcoming informal tangents on any topics of paranormal interest, and followed by a short discussion. Following the lecture, we will reconvene at a nearby pub for those sufficiently brave, or tragically foolhardy, paranormal social scientists who wish to bare their minds and souls to the horrors that gnaw ceaselessly at the tattered fabric of our mundane reality.

eurordis
In this episode of EURORDIS Rare on Air, host Julien Poulain speaks with Dr. Miriam Wilms, a visceral surgeon, proctologist, and mother whose son was born with a rare anorectal malformation. Miriam shares the early challenges her family faced within Germany’s decentralised healthcare system, from securing specialised surgeries for her son to coordinating his long-term care needs. As an advocate with SoMA, a German organisation supporting families impacted by anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung's disease, and cloacal exstrophy, Miriam discusses how her dual roles as a parent and medical professional have uniquely shaped her perspective on rare disease care. She explains why centralising highly specialised treatments is important for improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs and outlines her vision for the systemic changes needed to support rare disease families across Europe. Cities are ready to act. Anuela Ristani, Deputy Mayor of Tirana, explains how the EU should engage younger generations in politics. The Eurocities Shadow Commission offers local level counterparts for members of Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission College. The Eurocities Shadow Commission’s mandate reflects the main messages from the Eurocities Manifesto, which outlines key actions for reimagining and strengthening Europe through urban initiatives. This includes a strong emphasis on social inclusion, climate resilience, digital transformation, and a more coordinated urban policy framework within the EU. #shadowcommission #youthrights #youth #teamlocaleurope #tirana #albania #betterfuture -- With Eurocities, it’s all in our name: we connect Europe and cities. The film, set against the backdrop of the fate of commercial complexes in Asian cities in 2016, uses a mockumentary style to blend real urban walks with design proposals. It explores the debate on whether Varanasi, an Indian religious city, is suitable for a commercial complex, intertwining its history, culture, present, and future. By creating a new commercial form that combines urban parks with shopping experiences, the design aims to redefine the relationship between commerce and the city while critiquing the potential destruction caused by large commercial plazas.

How Microalgae Can Help Reduce the Use of Chemical Fertilisers
30 Oct 2024
ESCI - European Scie...
Microalgae, tiny oxygen-producing organisms found in water, produce compounds that promote root development in plants. These compounds can be transformed into biostimulants to enhance plant growth. Cristina Brito Lopez is studying the effects of #microalgae “smoothies” on plants as part of the EU-funded research project REALM. In this video, she explains how she is investigating whether these compounds can improve plant growth. If successful, this could help reduce the use of chemical #fertilizers, benefiting both the soil and the #environment . For her work, Cristina Brito Lopez collaborates with Antonia Fichtenbauer, who grows the microalgae that Cristina uses. What makes these microalgae special is that they grow in the wastewater of soilless greenhouses. As they grow, they treat the wastewater by removing residual fertilisers. This makes the production of microalgae more sustainable and reduces the use of freshwater. EPA Ireland
Globally, energy systems are undergoing two simultaneous and radical transformations that present a new set of challenges in sustainable waste management: the electrification of the transportation network and the decarbonisation of the electricity grid. In this week’s research report the authors identified challenges and modelled scenarios for the sustainable management of LongWEEE (i.e. longer lifetime electrical devices) with a specific focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and electric vehicle batteries. The research projects the quantity of WEEE generated from both sectors out to 2050 and estimates the related cost of recycling with the purpose of helping plan for financially sound and sustainable WEEE management into the future.

Taalbubbels+ worked with small groups of low-literate mothers with children under 3 years old. The mothers simultaneously learned Dutch while receiving information and counselling on children’s care and upbringing. Between 2015 and 2020, the project reached 126 mothers and their children through 12 study groups. The feedback from mothers who participated in the program was generally positive. Many highlighted that it expanded their social network and interactions with other women and improved their self-confidence, especially in speaking Dutch. After the project finished, participants of Taalbubbels+ continued to learn Dutch, participate in leisure activities, seek employment, and perform voluntary work in the community. The project’s approach has since 2021 been anchored in the regular operation of partner organisations and became a blueprint for other cooperation-based projects in Antwerp. Taalbubbels+ is a part of the Atlas Dutch-language training centre. It was co-funded by the EU Asylum, Migration, and Integration Fund 2014-2020 and received a total of EUR 350 442. The successful integration of these mothers and their children in Antwerp has improved their individual lives and strengthened community bonds. This project serves as a reminder that migrant integration is key to promoting social inclusion and good relations across groups, contributing to more inclusive societies. NATO’s Arctic Marines – Journey through the High North

NATO’s marines are among the toughest troops in the Alliance. But in the Arctic, tough isn’t enough – marines must be unusually skilled and resilient to survive the freezing temperatures and rugged landscape. In early 2024, marine forces from several NATO Allies got to test their mettle against the High North, putting their cold weather lessons into practice while learning new tactics from their counterparts during exercise Steadfast Defender 24. Finnish, Italian and Swedish marines worked together to stage amphibious raids on the coast of Norway, while US marines improved their survival skills inland, learning what their Nordic Allies already know: when it comes to deep snow, skis are the only way to get around. The exercise was particularly poignant for Finland and Sweden, NATO’s two newest members. Finland joined in 2023, while Sweden joined in the midst of the exercise, with many Swedish troops holding impromptu celebrations to mark their accession. Marines need to be prepared to come ashore and defend Allied territory, no matter the time, place or climate. This short documentary follows the marines during Steadfast Defender, showing that they’re more than capable of braving the elements to fulfil their mandate. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #WeAreNATO
