China HR Insights: From Talent Pool to Work Contracts
26 Mar 2024
EU SME Centre
China’s labour market is undergoing profound changes. The educational attainment level of urbanites has soared over the past decade, transforming the talent pool in large cities. This has also contributed to the gradual shift to an economy more reliant on the tertiary sector in terms of GDP and employment shares. However, urban-rural differences remain high. In first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin, 30% of the population has graduated from university. In comparison, at the national level, the rate of tertiary education remained at 18,5% in 2022. For European SMEs in China, understanding the country’s labour market is key to creating sound staffing strategies for their teams on the ground. Our recent report on the topic highlights the evolution of the talent pool, the cultural differences between China and Europe in terms of communication styles, hierarchy, and work-life balance, as well as contractual considerations. In this video, Hunter Shi, co-author of the report, presents some of the main points that SMEs should know when they build teams in China. Time chapters: 00:00:00 Introduction 00:00:33 China's labour market 00:02:52 China's labour law and regulations 00:06:10 Five social insurances and one housing fund 00:09:50 Direct, dispatched, outsourced labour 00:12:50 Labour contract termination 00:15:10 Proactive management 00:18:10 Looking ahead New to China's HR practices? Partnerships and alliance-building are in our DNA. Cooperating with hundreds of organisations worldwide, we ensure that our influential research lands where it has the most impact – from communities and courtrooms to the desks of civil society organisations, media, and politicians. Green and Sustainable Urban Landscape Opportunities for SMEs in China
7 Mar 2024
EU SME Centre
China’s emphasis on green and sustainable development offers a fertile ground for businesses in sustainable urban development. Integral to this are initiatives such as China’s Five-Year Plan, the Urban Renewal Action Plan (2023–2025), and local programmes for green development and urban planning. These initiatives set forth ambitious goals for achieving ultra-low energy consumption in construction. They have also laid the groundwork for the adoption of green transportation projects. European SMEs, with their established practices in eco-friendly construction and sustainable transportation, are well-positioned to make a significant impact in China’s growing green and sustainable urban development sector and to export their expertise and sustainable solutions. Selling out Nigeria - Shell's irresponsible divestment
28 Feb 2024
SOMO Research
Shell entered the Niger Delta during colonial rule... and now, it is leaving behind petroleum-contaminated rivers and streams and vast areas of polluted land that have devastated the lives and livelihoods of millions of people living in the Niger Delta. Shell claims it cleans up, but our new report “Selling Out Nigeria – Shell’s irresponsible divestment” shows how historical pollution remains a serious issue and how Shell is trying to avoid responsibility for this despite the billions of dollars it has earned from the oil. Shell must be made to clean up the damage and pay for decommissioning of the oil infrastructure before it leaves. There can be no justice in the energy transition if fossil fuel companies can walk away from contexts like the Niger Delta, which is one of the most oil-polluted places on Earth. We interviewed people in the Niger Delta, whose livelihoods have been affected by the oil pollution as well as Nigerian activists who are seeking to hold fossil fuel giants like Shell accountable. 📽️ Filmed and directed by Simpa Samson from Abuja in Nigeria. Retailers and wholesalers express serious concerns over the draft Late Payment Regulation introduced by the Commission in September 2023. The impact on businesses and especially SMEs in Europe will be disproportionate and dramatic if the proposal is not seriously reconsidered. The draft Regulation goes beyond its intent to address late payments (breach of contract) and is in fact an absolute restriction of freedom to negotiate payment terms beyond 30 days. No EU country has rules that are as drastic. Countries with stricter requirements, such as the Netherlands, have some form of derogation or flexibility in place. EuroCommerce is the principal European organisation representing the retail and wholesale sector. It embraces national associations in 27 countries and 5 million companies, including leading global players and many small businesses. Over a billion times a day, retailers and wholesalers distribute goods and provide an essential service to millions of business and individual customers. The sector generates 1 in 7 jobs, offering a varied career to 26 million Europeans, many of them young people. It also supports millions of further jobs throughout the supply chain, from small local suppliers to international businesses. EuroCommerce is the recognised European social partner for the retail and wholesale sector.

BEFIT: A new, single set of rules to determine the tax base of groups of companies in the EU
19 Jan 2024
EU tax and customs
Currently, large cross-border groups must comply with up to 27 different national tax systems in the EU, making it difficult and costly for them to do business across the Union. This complexity creates an uneven playing field and increases tax uncertainty and tax compliance costs for businesses operating in more than one Member State and discourages cross-border investments. It also puts EU businesses at a competitive disadvantage compared to businesses operating in markets of a comparable size elsewhere in the world. The new proposal sets out a new framework of tax rules to help all companies in a group to determine their tax base. A One-Stop-Shop will allow the group to file an information return with the tax bases of all the group members with the tax administration of one Member State. Those tax bases will then be aggregated at EU group level and allocated to each company in the group. Finally, Member States will apply their own adjustments and corporate tax rate to the allocated tax base of the company established in that country. The webinar is addressed to MNEs with an annual combined revenue of at least €750 million. It will explain the proposal to the interested audience and will also address questions from the audience. EU tax and customs
Compliance with business taxation rules can be complex. If SMEs wish to operate cross-border, they become taxable in more than one Member State as soon as their activity abroad creates a permanent establishment, which requires compliance with different tax systems and rules. Compliance with those obligations comes with fixed costs, creating a barrier that can prevent SMEs from developing into other markets, investing back into their business or hiring new staff. This is especially the case for new companies and start-ups. Under the new Head Office Taxation (HOT) proposal, cross-border SMEs would be able to choose to interact with only one tax administration in one EU Member State – that of the Head Office – instead of having to comply with multiple tax systems. The Commission's proposal will increase tax certainty and reduce compliance costs, which will help to foster investment and cross-border expansion in the EU. The webinar is addressed to SME's. It will explain the proposal to the interested audience and will also address questions from the audience. Financing of industrial scale projects, especially in their demonstration phase and in the deployment of first industrial units (biorefineries), remains one of the main obstacles today for bio-based industries in Europe. These initiatives involve a huge mobilisation of capital which affects SMEs in particular. In addition, financial institutions, venture capital, national banks still perceive these investments as too risky and not always bankable. Therefore, there exists the need to facilitate access to finance in order to realise the full potential of the bioeconomy in Europe. Scaling up technologies, from research to demonstration, to actual industrial production, is seen by banks and financial institutions as a risky endeavour and is often deemed as “non-bankable” despite these initiatives having the objective of a more sustainable and circular way of producing. European Aluminium
To understand the importance of aluminium in securing Europe’s resilient energy supply chain, it is crucial to understand its production. Roman Düssel, Department Manager, Reduction Area at TRIMET Aluminium SE, explains this process in detail. After dissolving aluminium oxide in the melt, liquid aluminium is then transported to a cast house where it is shaped into specific forms from slabs and billets to wires used for electrical cables. The recycling rate of aluminium #madeinEurope is very high. In Germany, it even reaches up to 95%! Since the demand for our metal keeps growing, primary production remains crucial for meeting those needs, especially in the context of Europe’s ambitious decarbonisation goals. --------------------------------------- Learn more about us: Website: http://www.european-aluminium.eu Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/EU_Aluminium LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-aluminium-association

The 2023 Modern Retail in Italy – Sustainability Report is in continuity with the spirit that characterized the previous 4 editions of Sustainability Report. However, its innovative dimension lies in the fact that, for the first time, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at the core of the analysis, with the aim of highlighting the commitment and contribution of Italian Modern Retail companies to the achievement of the SDGs set in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The outcome is an effective synthesis of how the sector operates in terms of social, environmental and economic sustainability. Sustainable growth, social responsibility and attention to the environment are core values that guide companies of the Modern Retail sector on a daily basis, reflected in the essential service that millions of people benefit from every day, as well as in the fundamental role they play in promoting the supply chain of Italian quality products, in operating towards a more circular economy and in reducing emissions.
