European Parliament
This year's award ceremony will be a celebration of European cinema, culminating with the announcement of the winner among the current nominees. For the second time ever, the number of nominated films has increased from three to five, reflecting the rich tapestry of storytelling and diversity present in contemporary European cinema. The five 2024 LUX Audience Award finalists are: - 20,000 Species of Bees by EstĂbaliz Urresola (Spain) - Fallen Leaves by Aki KaurismĂ€ki (Finland/Germany) - On the Adamant by Nicolas Philibert (France/Japan) - Smoke Sauna Sisterhood by Anna Hints (Estonia/France/Iceland) - The Teachersâ Lounge by Ilker Ăatak (Germany) European citizens and members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have watched and rated the films and their ratings combined will decide the winner. Assessing EU's chemicals legislation: more needs to be done to make chemicals safe and sustainable
16 Apr 2024
EUchemicals
Welcome to this episode of the Safer Chemicals Podcast, where we look into the EU indicator framework for chemicals, focused on improving chemical safety across Europe. The transition towards safer and more sustainable chemicals is progressing in some areas, while in others, it is just beginning. This is the finding of a first, joint Europe-wide assessment of the drivers and impact of chemical pollution by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The benchmarking found that more work is still needed to reduce the impact of harmful substances on human health and the environment.⯠We are joined by Leena YlĂ€-Mononen, the Executive Director of EEA and Sharon McGuinness, the Executive Director of ECHA. Together, they discuss the roles their agencies play in developing these indicators. This episode offers an in-depth look at how these agencies work together to support safer chemical management, highlighting the real-world impact of their work on environmental and public health. We'll explore the challenges faced during the project, the collaboration between various European institutions, and what future developments we might expect in the realm of chemical safety. Background According to the joint EEA-ECHA synthesis report on the EU indicator framework for chemicals, the overall use of the most harmful chemicals (in particular those that are carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic) is still growing but more slowly than the overall chemicals market growth. Pressure is increasing to avoid the use of so-called substances of concern and to implement the principles of the safe and sustainable by design framework.âŻÂ There is a need to more effectively ensure that consumer products do not contain the most harmful substances, for example chemicals that are endocrine disrupting, that negatively affect the hormone system, or substances that are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic, which present a risk for years to come even after their use has ceased. More data and information are needed to better understand human and environmental exposure to those most harmful chemicals and their impacts. Still, the indicators show clearly that the shift to safe and sustainable chemicals must continue and should even be accelerated.⯠Listen to our episode for a deep dive into what the main findings of this initial assessment were and check the online dashboard for more details. Democracy Erodes from the Top: Misperceptions about the Populist Challenge
15 Apr 2024
IIEA
Professor Larry M. Bartels discusses his new book Democracy Erodes from the Top: Leaders, Citizens and the Challenge of Populism in Europe. Professor Bartels challenges the narrative of a populist âwaveâ in contemporary European public opinion. He argues that electoral support for right-wing populist parties has increased only modestly, driven by populist entrepreneurs, the failures of mainstream parties, and media hype. He argues that Europeâs democratic backsliding reflects the ambitions of political leaders rather than public opinion. Professor Bartels concludes that the bottom-up interpretation of Europeâs political crisis needs to be turned upside down. About the speaker: Larry M. Bartels is May Werthan Shayne Chair of Public Policy and Social Science and University Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Law at Vanderbilt University. His books include Democracy Erodes from the Top: Leaders, Citizens, and the Challenge of Populism in Europe; Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age (2nd ed); and Democracy for Realists: Why Elections Do Not Produce Responsive Government (with Christopher Achen). RECAH Breakfast sessions â 2. Coöperation BioZon, The Netherlands (26 July 2023)
15 Apr 2024
EU Energy
The 2nd Energy Community Breakfast Session highlighted the operations and successes of Biozon, an energy community in the Netherlands founded on the principle of cost-effective power, delivering energy that flows through your socket that won't hit you in your pocket. Founded in 2019, Biozon's initiative began with a power purchasing agreement at a fixed price of 0.055 cent per kWh with Agem Municipal Energy. The community uses a landfill gas installation as a source of power generation. The model entails procuring additional electricity from other energy communities within the Netherlands when required and resorting to the conventional market only as a last option. This approach aligns with Biozon's mission of promoting sustainable and affordable energy. Currently, the project involves 60 households, supplied through Agem, which holds the requisite permit. ComunitĂ Energitica Rinnovabile Rosetana APS, referred to more colloquially as ComunitĂ Energetica Rinnovabile di Roseto Valfortore, is a rural EC in Apulia, Italy. The EC celebrated the inauguration of their first 6kW renewable energy installation on January 27th, 2023. The EC is actively pursuing other innovative activities in the near future, by maximising their income with the GSE incentive on shared energy using smart meters, exploring opportunities for storage, e-mobility and district heating. The ECâs âleasing modelâ is a unique way of reducing the initial financial burden on the community and offers a valuable lesson to other communities in their early stages, as well as the ECsâ ability to take advantage of the incentives available in Italy through self-consumption and shared energy. Currently, the community has 30 members and has a driving ambition to increase self-consumption to cover 100% of its citizens, reducing their financial costs for energy and eventually becoming autonomous from an energy perspective. Goiener is a non-profit citizen cooperative whose activity is to commercialise 100% renewable electricity. Given the broad scope of citizen energy activities in 2015, the Goiener Association was created. They hoped to scale and strengthen the dissemination of activities, training, awareness raising and development of new lines of work. They foster collaboration with social networks that empower citizens and share our values. Their mission is to channel citizen demand to regain control of the local energy supply. The Goiener cooperative is committed to an inclusive organisational structure based on thematic and multidisciplinary teams. It consists of 200 volunteers and workers that have autonomy but also coordinate. The Missing Puzzle Piece | The Incredible Adventures of the Hera mission
15 Apr 2024
European Space Agenc...
Meet Hera, our very own asteroid detective. Together with two CubeSats â Milani the rock decoder and Juventas the radar visionary â Hera is off on an adventure to explore Didymos, a double asteroid system that is typical of the thousands that pose an impact risk to planet Earth. In September 2022 NASAâs DART spacecraft tested if it was possible to divert an asteroid by giving it a shove â and found out that it was! Important knowledge, should we wish to avoid going the same way as the dinosaurs. Astronomers can observe from afar how the smaller asteroidâs orbit has shifted since DARTâs impact, but there is still a missing piece of the puzzle if we want to fully understand how âkinetic impactingâ works in practice. Suitable for kids and adults alike, this episode of âThe Incredible Adventures of Heraâ explains why ESAâs asteroid detective and its CubeSat assistants need to get up close and personal to shine light on this cosmic mystery. GFDRR Risk Data Fellows 2023 - Impacting their communities
15 Apr 2024
GFDRR
The Disaster and Climate Risk Data Fellowship program believes that students, young climate researchers, and data scientists from vulnerable countries are best positioned to lead scientific-based climate risk efforts in their regions. This video showcases the work of the first cohort of Disaster and Climate Risk Data Fellows at the World Bank. This initiative was led by the Digital Earth team from the Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) at the World Bank, with financial support from a grant provided by the Swiss Re Foundation. The project commenced in September 2022 and concluded in December 2023, lasting a total of 15 months. The primary objective of the program was to identify and support a cohort of Risk Data Fellows in seven climate-vulnerable countries. Their mandate was to access, create, and communicate climate risk knowledge within their respective countries. They accomplished this by contributing to World Bank projects related to disaster investments or analytical work. Fellows were chosen based on their expertise in disaster and climate risk data, along with their commitment to supporting their countries and communities. They received training and hands-on support throughout the project and significantly contributed to enhancing climate risk analysis through their involvement in World Bank projects. In addition to supporting the selected fellows, the project aimed to develop the Risk Data Library, a project focused on establishing open data standards and tools to facilitate disaster and climate risk assessments, particularly in countries with limited data access. The fellows presented their work at the World Bank HQ in Washington DC and Columbia University in New York. But more importantly, they contributed significantly to improving disaster and climate risk knowledge for their communities. Risk Data Fellows featured in the video: - Zia Uddin Foisal: Socioeconomic and climate data for Bangladesh investments - Paolo Magnata: Enhancing coastal road safety in Mindanao Island, Philippines - Ankita Sood: Mitigating flood and drought risks in Indian cities - Bradley Riley: Integrated river management in three South African cities - Mohammad Fadli: Climate adaptation data for 80,000 villages in Indonesia - Hwaba Mambo: Integrating disaster risk data into the National Social Registry Fund in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - Isabelle Tingzon: Mapping buildings using drones and machine learning in the Caribbean The World Bank's Risk Data Fellows Project team included Pierre Chrzanowski (Disaster Risk Management Specialist), Andrea Garcia Tapia (Disaster Risk Consultant), Stuart Fraser (Senior Disaster Risk Consultant), Nuala Cowan (Senior Disaster Risk Consultant), and Mattia Amadio (Disaster Risk Analytics Consultant). Solidarity with Logistics workers in France!
12 Apr 2024
ETFeurope
Solidarity with Logistics workers in France! ETF stands in solidarity with logistics workers and their unions in France following the national mobilisation that began on April 2 for the entire logistics sector. This national movement follows on from a local grassroots action at ID Logistics, an international contract logistics group based in France, with a revenue of âŹ2,747 million (2023). Following what was described as an âoutrageousâ pay offer during annual pay negotiations - an increase in conventional rates from 0.6 to 1.13% - CFdT negotiators walked out and have since boycotted all meetings. The national road transport section of the French union federation FGTE-CFdT has now called for a national transport workersâ mobilisation to call out logistics employers for their industry-wide disregard of their workers. The logistics sector contributes 10% of national GDP in France. During the global pandemic, their work was essential for the processing and delivery of vital medical equipment, as well as other goods and services that saved lives. This year, they will also play a crucial role for Franceâs global image, in the preparation and running of the Olympic Games in Paris, in July 2024. The unions representing logistics workers in France are calling for a collective agreement that recognises the importance of their contribution to the economy and guarantees decent work and decent pay.

How Can Policymakers Address AI Voice-Cloning Scams?
12 Apr 2024
DataInnovation
There has been a concerning rise in nefarious uses of AI-enabled voice cloning recently. Bad actors have targeted families and small businesses with disturbing extortion scams. The scams themselves are not new, the term âvirtual kidnapping scamâ has been around for many years to describe the ways fraudsters trick victims into paying a ransom to free a loved one they believe is being threatened. But AI has made these scams more sophisticated as the technology can be trained on publicly accessible audio recordings of regular people to make them sound incredibly authentic and believable.Join the Center for Data Innovation for a panel discussion exploring how threats from AI voice cloning are likely to develop, what countermeasures exist, and actionable steps policymakers can take to address both national and international threats.Questions for the speakers?
