In this SUPERB/IUFRO Forest Restoration Talk, we investigate the nexus between forest restoration and water. Considering the options and limitations of forest restoration from the perspective of water cycling has become critical, especially in dry regions of the world. We need to transform traditional approaches to restoration by taking into account water resource limitations, the impacts of forestry practices on water resources, and the optimisation of multiple forest functions and services. Using afforestation in the Loess Plateau, China, as a regional example, this webinar discusses the topic with two speakers from IUFRO’s Transforming Forest Landscapes Task Force: • Yanhui Wang, Ecology and Nature Conservation Institute, Chinese Academy of Forestry • Zhang Mingfang, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China More on SUPERB: https://forest-restoration.eu/

CDT April 2024 Working Group: Tech Standards and Human Rights
19 Apr 2024
Center for Democracy...
The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) and a coalition of civil society experts discussed what they’re doing to build the field of #PublicInterest technologists shaping standards and #InternetGovernance processes, and how the rest of us can follow this work and get engaged. While CDT has advocated in #InternetStandards bodies since the early 2000s, few civil society organizations remain engaged in technical standards. However with legislation like the AI Act in Europe, global standards are being explicitly linked to policy, and these seemingly arcane and specialist fora have become directly consequential. Public interest #technologists play a crucial role in shaping global internet standards, as these standards fundamentally govern how the internet operates and evolves. By influencing these standards, technologists can advocate for #privacy, #accessibility, and freedom of expression, which are vital for a democratic and equitable digital landscape. Their expertise and ethical perspective are essential in confronting challenges like the #DigitalDivide, #surveillance, and #censorship, thus ensuring that technological advancements serve the greater good and protect individual rights on a global scale. These challenges and opportunities occur in dozens of consequential standards development organizations at the regional and global level, each with their own complex ecosystem of expertise, documentation and working methods. We explored this ecosystem and discuss why and how civil society should become more engaged in these forums. Eighty years ago, NSF was founded with the primary objective of establishing guidelines for the design and manufacturing of equipment and supplies in a manner that ensures safety. These guidelines, now referred to as 'The Standards,' are aimed at facilitating the use of safe materials and ensuring that the end products are easily cleanable. In this webinar, we'll delve into a brief history of NSF as well as provide a broad overview of the various certifications it offers. This includes certifications for food equipment, 'Safer Green' chemicals, and food-grade lubricants. Furthermore, we'll explore the impact of these standards on hospitality operators, health departments, manufacturers, inventors, and other stakeholders within the industry. medicine French practical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of Relapsing Polychondritis (RP)
French practical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of Relapsing Polychondritis (RP)
19 Apr 2024
ERN ReCONNET
Short description The webinar is focused on the French practical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of relapsing Polychondritis (RP). RP usually begins in middle-aged individuals. This diagnosis is mainly suggested in the presence of chondritis, i.e. inflammatory flares on the cartilage, in particular of the ears, nose or respiratory tract, and more rarely in the presence of other manifestations. The formal diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis cannot be established with certainty before the onset of chondritis, which can sometimes occur several years after the first signs. No laboratory test is specific of relapsing polychondritis, the diagnosis is usually based on clinical evidence and the elimination of differential diagnoses. Relapsing polychondritis is a long-lasting and often unpredictable disease, evolving in the form of relapses interspersed with periods of remission that can be very prolonged. Its management is not codified and depends on the nature of the patient’s symptoms and association or not with myelo-dysplasia/vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS). Some minor forms can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or a short course of corticosteroids with possibly a background treatment of colchicine. However, the treatment strategy is often based on the lowest possible dosage of corticosteroids combined with background treatment with conventional immunosuppressants (e.g. methotrexate, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, rarely cyclophosphamide) or targeted therapies. Specific strategies are required if relapsing polychondritis is associated with myelodysplasia/VEXAS. Forms limited to the cartilage of the nose or ears have a good prognosis. Involvement of the cartilage of the respiratory tract, cardiovascular involvement, and association with myelodysplasia/VEXAS (more frequent in men over 50 years of age) are detrimental to the prognosis of the disease. Speaker Prof. Laurent Arnaud (MD, PhD) is full Professor of Rheumatology at Strasbourg University & Academic Hospitals (France). He obtained his medical degree and a PhD in immunology from Paris University. His main clinical interests focus on the care of patients with autoimmune diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and relapsing polychondritis (RP). He is leading a research group focusing on innovative strategies to study the epidemiology of autoimmune diseases, with a particular interest for the use of novel diagnostic and therapeutic digital strategies based on big data and Artificial Intelligence. With his team at the French National Reference Center for Rare Autoimmune Diseases of Strasbourg (CRMR RESO), he has published more than 200 articles in the field of rare diseases. Professor Arnaud is currently the President of the European Lupus Society (SLEuro) and Disease Coordinator for Lupus and relapsing polychondritis of the ERN ReCONNET. He is the curator of a twitter account (@Lupusreference) followed by more than 15.5k people. EU Energy
With recent technological breakthroughs and increased private investments the fusion industry is gaining momentum. Europe has always been at the forefront in fusion research and technology. To develop an EU path towards fusion commercialisation and build industrial capability, it is vital for the EU to capitalise on the experience gained from the Joint European Torus (JET) and other fusion activities to date, including the EUROfusion - Realising Fusion Energy, ITER - the way to new energy and BROADER APPROACH programmes. It is important to reflect on funding and regulatory needs and to discuss cooperation mechanisms between the governments, laboratories and industry. As a part of an ongoing process together with the Directorate-General for Research and Development towards creating an agile policy framework for fusion research and innovation, the Directorate-General for Energy invites the key fusion stakeholders to Strasbourg to discuss the current state of fusion in the EU and how to foster acceleration in fusion development. This discussion will inform concrete actions and recommendations for the Commission and EU countries to develop joint winning strategies and build a thriving European ecosystem.

A new independent report commissioned by the EBU from Oxford Economics calculates that the economic impact of public service media (PSM) sports broadcasting contributed EUR 4.9 billion to Europe’s GDP and supported over 60,000 jobs in 2022. The findings include direct contributions from content production and broadcasting and significant indirect and induced impacts due to supply chain spending and employees’ consumer expenditure. The study also explores wider impacts, such as the way in which PSM coverage attracts sponsorship income for sport. The Economic Impact of the Sports Activities of Public Service Media evaluates the impact of 188,000 hours of free-to-air (FTA) sports programming across radio and television, from 44 EBU Members in 31 countries, including high-profile, high-value events such as the FIFA World Cup Finals and the World Athletics Championships. It also includes the online engagement of millions of sports fans through websites, apps and social media. All Together Now: Disciplined flight plan execution is a top priority to ensure a smooth summer 2024
19 Apr 2024
EUROCONTROL
EUROCONTROL’s All Together Now 2024 video on the importance of disciplined flight plan execution explains why sticking to an agreed flight plan - unless it is safety critical - is a priority to ensure smooth air traffic across the Network as any changes affect air traffic control, airports and ground handling. Flights entering into airspace that is not expecting them results in unused, lost capacity in the originally planned airspace and additional loading challenges in the new airspace. Disciplined flight plan execution is one of five priorities EUROCONTROL encourages aviation to focus on as we prepare for busy summer traffic together. The other priorities include prioritising first rotation, delivering agreed capacities, realistic schedules including turnaround times and adverse weather management. Our All Together Now 2024 videos are part of the EUROCONTROL Network Manager’s “All Together Now 2024” campaign to manage busy summer air traffic across the European aviation network. Central to the campaign is our hands-on All Together Now 2024 guide for flight dispatchers, pilots, air traffic controllers, flow management positions and airports that recommends how each can play their part in ensuring efficient air traffic this summer and best cooperate with the EUROCONTROL Network Manager Operations Centre.

The EU has recently been placing greater weight on economic security as a distinct policy objective. How does this differ from past attempts to increase resilience and prevent crises? There is also a widespread view that increasing economic security should take the form of “de-risking” that preserves trade integrations as much as possible. But how do we determine exactly what needs de-risking? This lecture seeks to answer these questions and use the answers to the diagnose EU’s policy agenda on economic security. What has been achieved, where are the blind spots, and how can the chances of unintended consequences be minimised? About the Speaker: Jeromin Zettelmeyer has been Director of Bruegel since September 2022. Born in Madrid in 1964, Jeromin was previously a Deputy Director of the Strategy and Policy Review Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Prior to that, he was Dennis Weatherstone Senior Fellow (2019) and Senior Fellow (2016-19) at the Peterson Institute for International Economics; Director-General for Economic Policy at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (2014-16); Director of Research and Deputy Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (2008-2014); and an IMF staff member, where he worked in the Research, Western Hemisphere, and European II Departments (1994-2008).

Disrupting Technologies Disrupt Democracy
18 Apr 2024
Center for Democracy...
The emergence of generative AI tools presents new challenges for our democracy, introducing ways to manipulate facts and mislead voters at a time when our society is already grappling with heightened election mis- and disinformation and eroding trust in institutions. In her new book, “AI Needs You: How We Can Change AI’s Future and Save Our Own,” Verity Harding lays out, in clear and compelling terms, lessons for our time. Drawing on deep insight into the process of technology development and the great scientific achievements of the past – including IVF, the space race and the early internet – she empowers each of us to join the conversation about AI and its possible futures.    Despite existing risks and harms associated with AI, technology corporations and policymakers continue to prioritize innovation and competition over people. Just like our democracy, AI can only benefit all of us if we are all represented in its development and governance. The future of AI, and our future with it, needs a more transparent and participatory approach that centers people. Alexandra Reeve Givens from the Center for Democracy and Technology and Verity Harding, director of the AI & Geopolitics project at the University of Cambridge and former head of policy at Google Deepmind will host an informal and invite-only salon to discuss the need for a robust participatory and democratic approach to AI policy, drawing on lessons from some of the most important policy moments in our nation’s history. Login info will be sent to registered attendees in advance of the event. Questions: We will accept questions for panelists before and during the discussion. You can submit them via email at [email protected] or via Twitter at #cdtquestions and @CenDemTech. For those joining via computer, you will be able to share your questions by using the chat.

Report: How can retail and supply chains support demand for more sustainable aquaculture feed?
18 Apr 2024
Nuffield Farming
Aisla Jones' report video How can retail and supply chains support demand for more sustainable aquaculture feed? sponsored by The Richard Lawes Foundation. Aisla's full report can be downloaded from: https://bit.ly/3RsNPNL ***** Executive Summary Background A constraint to the potential growth and long-term sustainability of global aquaculture in the coming decades, is the availability and sustainability of aquafeed (Naylor et al., 2021). Aquafeed ingredients may account for up to 90% of the environmental impacts and carbon footprint of farmed fish production (Little et al., 2018). In the last few years, many UK retailers and seafood companies have set ambitious carbon emissions targets as well as having broad responsible sourcing policies which include seafood. Scottish Salmon is the UK’s largest food export and a popular domestic product (Seafish, 2021). In addition, UK consumers enjoy a range of imported farmed fish species e.g., farmed prawns, seabass and pangasius. These species rely on feed made up of a range of globally sourced ingredients which contributes to the carbon and environmental footprint of the product. This project aimed to explore the environmental impacts of traditional and ‘alternative’ aquafeed ingredients and identify opportunities for retailers and seafood supply chains to support more sustainable feed ingredient production and use. Methods As part of the Nuffield study tour, six countries were visited: Brazil, Norway, Singapore, Thailand, USA and the UK. Visits and meetings were carried out with a range of aquaculture feed stakeholders including feed ingredient producers, feed manufacturers, fish farmers, researchers, seafood processors, seafood companies and retailers; a sample also participated in in-depth interviews. Results Through the study tour, examples of aquaculture feed sustainability initiatives were observed which may mitigate some of the environmental impacts of aquaculture feed production. Aquafeed data collection and certification was largely focused on ‘known risks’ i.e., environmental impacts of marine ingredients and soy. Stakeholders suggested that feed companies are currently leading work on feed sustainability. Limitations to working more on feed sustainability was largely lack of information and data regarding feed production and sustainability challenges. Finding sustainable alternative ingredients was agreed to be the main priority for future aquafeed sustainability. Discussion and conclusions Retailers and suppliers can support more sustainable aquaculture feed through: • Managing risks e.g., using data and certification; responsible sourcing policies • Supporting improvement efforts e.g., supply chain engagement, advocacy, and investment Although there are existing data and certification tools available to the supply chain, supply chains should advocate for improved traceability and transparency of feed ingredients to allow better understanding of feed ingredient production and associated environmental and social risks. An opportunity to support best practice and drive sustainability could be the creation of an independent holistic risk assessment tools focused on feed ingredients and in a format readily accessible to non-feed experts. More clear and consistent asks from aquaculture supply chains could encourage feed companies to prioritise feed sustainability when formulating feed. Collaboratively addressing responsible sourcing of aquaculture feed ingredients could support the long-term sustainability and availability of feed ingredients for the aquaculture sector. ***** Nuffield Farming Scholarships are awarded to approximately 20 members of the UK food, farming, horticulture and rural industries each year. "4 per 1000" Community of Practice Webinar: Regreening the Sahel – Restoring land and livelihoods.
18 Apr 2024
4p1000 Initiative
Plus d’informations sur les organisations et les intervenants : https://www.groundswellinternational.org www.spong.bf Land degradation is a severe threat in Africa, particularly in the Sahel, where climate change, increased population, loss of tree and vegetative cover, and intensified land use undermine the natural resource base on which rural communities depend. Solutions for restoring the dry lands are vital to reversing land degradation and biodiversity loss and addressing the effects of climate change. It is about regaining lost ecological functions by enabling communities to improve their livelihoods' productivity, resilience, and sustainability by adopting a combination of innovative regreening practices that regenerate the land and restore the landscapes. In this session of the Community of Practice, we invited Groundswell International and SPONG to report on their work in the Sahel. They will explain their methods and practices on the lands and in the communities and discuss successes and challenges. There will be space for questions, answers, and discussions. The Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), the largest component of the European Union’s landmark Next Generation EU programme enacted in 2021, has passed its halftime. The European Commission presented a very positive assessment of the RRF in its mid-term evaluation, which was also supported by an independent evaluation. However, implementation is belated, while questions about the RRF’s results orientation and additionality remain open. What lessons to learn from the RRF for the future design of EU funding instruments?
