Heading towards well-being societies in Europe
25 Mar 2024
European Health Foru...
Organised by the European Health Forum Gastein in collaboration with the Austrian National Public Health Institute and Partners. Well-being societies are those that prioritise the well-being of their citizens over economic growth and profit. According to the World Health Organization, well-being is a positive state experienced by individuals and societies, determined by social, economic, and environmental conditions. It encompasses quality of life and the ability of people and societies to contribute to the world with a sense of meaning and purpose. To deliver well-being societies, the 2021 Geneva Charter for Well-being by the United Nations Organization (UNO) calls for investments in planetary, societal, community, and individual health and well-being. In parallel adjustments are needed to social structures to help people take charge of their lives and health, and a reorientation of societal attitudes and actions in a fundamental way that aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. During this webinar, featuring stakeholders from across the societal spectrum, we will explore the fundamentals of a well-being society, and hear from a range of international actors putting well-being at the forefront of their policies. SPEAKERS Eluned Morgan, Minister for Health and Social Services, Wales Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat, WHO Regional Office for Europe Riikka Pellikka, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland Amanda Janoo, Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEALL) Herwig Ostermann, Austrian National Public Health Institute Clara Moder, arbeit plus Judith delle Grazie, Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, Austria MODERATED BY Dorli Kahr-Gottlieb, European Health Forum Gastein

As economies recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation spiked to its highest levels in decades. This tested both central banks' commitment to price stability and the effectiveness of their frameworks and tools. Panel presentations at this event draw from a new book published by the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), Monetary Policy Responses to the Post-Pandemic Inflation, edited by Bill English, Kristin Forbes, and Ángel Ubide, with contributions by senior policymakers and leading economists exploring how central banks across the globe responded to these challenges. What strategies did they follow? How did their responses differ—and why? What did we learn about the risks to financial stability from sharp and unexpected increases in interest rates? This wide range of experiences provides important insights and lessons to better tackle the next inflationary episode. We have made good progress in our fight against inflation since we started to tighten our monetary policy in 2022. Where do we stand right now? And what are we keeping a close eye on in the economy? Host Stefania Secola discusses these topics with our Chief Economist Philip R. Lane. They also talk about the ECB’s recent changes to its operational framework for implementing monetary policy. The views expressed are those of the speakers and not necessarily those of the European Central Bank. Published on 25 March 2024 and recorded on 21 March 2024. In this episode: 00:05 – Inflation right now How has inflation evolved since its peak in late 2022? What is the outlook for the year ahead and what will shape our future decisions? 04:00 – Wages and inflation How are rising wages affecting inflation, and is the situation the same across all euro area countries? 08:00 – The state of the labour market Unemployment is historically low, but economic growth is projected to be lower than in previous years. What might the coming months hold for the labour market? 14:30 – The ECB’s operational framework Why have we reviewed our operational framework for implementing monetary policy? How does it help our work to keep prices stable? 20:00 – Our guest’s hot tip Our guest, Philip R. EUROCONTROL
EUROCONTROL’s All Together Now 2024 video on the importance of prioritising first rotation explains why it is crucially important that the first flight of the day leaves on time, as each minute of delay for the first rotation is quadrupled by the time of the last rotation – and knock-on delays mount risking night curfew issues. Prioritising first rotation is one of five priorities EUROCONTROL encourages aviation to focus on as we prepare for busy summer traffic together. The other priorities include disciplined flight plan execution to ensure predictability, delivering agreed capacities, realistic schedules including turnaround times and adverse weather management. Our All Together Now 2024 videos are part of the EUROCONTROL Network Manager’s “All Together Now 2024” campaign to manage busy summer air traffic across the European aviation network. Central to the campaign is our hands-on All Together Now 2024 guide for flight dispatchers, pilots, air traffic controllers, flow management positions and airports that recommends how each can play their part in ensuring efficient air traffic this summer and best cooperate with the EUROCONTROL Network Manager Operations Centre by taking a network view.

Since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began in February 2022, international organisations have documented a wide range of serious human rights violations affecting children. Reports of children forcibly deported or displaced by Russian authorities, combined in many cases with them being subjected to re-education programmes and forced adoption, have raised concern. According to the Children of War initiative of the Ukrainian National Information Bureau (NIB), more than 19 500 children have been deported or forcibly displaced, and only 388 have been returned.

In challenging times for Ukraine, despite public appraisals following the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ten-year mark of the Russian annexation of Crimea on 18 March 2024. This webinar will provide a deep dive into current developments in Ukraine and show how Europeans can best support democratic structures, and hence a European path for Ukraine, whilst ensuring that it prevails militarily – as both will ultimately determine victory against Russia. Against the backdrop of increasingly negative news coverage on the state of Ukraine’s democracy, and the challenge to secure military and financial support in Europe and the United States, our panelists will provide a positive outlook on the societal transformations ushered in by ten years of war and the accelerated changes brought about by the invasion, and the war’s impact on the Ukrainian military. Together with our panel of experts, we will discuss: What do European leaders need to do to best support democratization? How can military support be structured in a unified and coordinated way? About the podcastThe EuroPCom podcast series on public communication is produced by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) in close cooperation with the EuroPCom partners.Host Evi Kiorri, Journalist | Multimedia Producer | Podcaster Guest Cato Waeterloos is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Media Studies at KU Leuven and at the research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologie at UGent. Her main research interests include different aspects of the interaction between new media and citizens’ civic and political participation.  In this episode From schooling and education to health and well-being to administration and political engagement, digital technology is increasingly intertwined with everyday life. It has transformed the ways in which we interact, relate to others, and access information. It now also offers new means for citizens to contribute to shaping political debate and drive real world change. Petition platforms, e-voting and other online tools expand opportunities to directly participate in civil society action and in democratic processes more broadly. But do these tools really have the potential to reinvigorate a more ‘citizen-powered’ democracy? Can people have a more direct influence on democratic processes? And what would be a strategy for engaging youth in local policymaking? This is what we want to explore with our guest Cato Waeterloos, postdoctoral researcher on interaction between new media and citizens’ civic and political participation at KU Leuven and UGent.

It is one of the major concerns of democratic countries. Behind false news or fake news, strategies are often articulated to manipulate public opinion and erode the stability of states and their institutions. Hoaxes and disinformation have long been a global threat to freedom and democracy but the development and widespread use of digital media allow for it to spread even more quickly, making disinformation a more pressing problem. What are the key communication tools in the fight against disinformation and the approaches we can take? These are the things that we will explore in this episode with our guest, Guillaume Kuster, founder of Check First, a Finnish software and methodologies start-up that helps journalists, citizens and policy makers fight disinformation all around the globe.

About the podcastThe EuroPCom podcast series on public communication is produced by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) in close cooperation with the EuroPCom partners.Host Evi Kiorri, Journalist | Multimedia Producer | Podcaster Guest Trisha Meyer is the Director of the Research Centre for Digitalisation, Democracy and Innovation at the Brussels School of Governance of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She is the Principal Investigator of the EDMO BELUX project, an EU-funded hub to counter disinformation in Belgium and Luxembourg.   In this episode A sound democracy needs informed citizens. A sound democracy can only function well if citizens can obtain proper information on public matters, if they can understand them and of course, if they can deliberate about them, if social media provide citizens with new opportunities to access information, enable them to express their opinions and to participate in democratic processes. But we know it, social media can also undermine democracy by distorting information, promoting false stories and facilitating political manipulation. So are social media a blessing or a curse for democracy, this is what we want to explore with our guest Trisha Meyer, director of the Research Centre for Digitalisation, Democracy and Innovation at the Brussels School of Governance of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

About the podcastThe EuroPCom podcast series on public communication is produced by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) in close cooperation with the EuroPCom partners.Host Evi Kiorri, Journalist | Multimedia Producer | Podcaster Guest Andreea Gorbatai is an associate professor at Vlerick Business School, in Brussels. She has a background as a sociologist and researches and teaches about the impact of technology on entrepreneurship.  In this episode In our daily lives, our behaviors are guided by norms as well as by ethics, through sets of principles that define what is acceptable or unacceptable, besides the purely legal perspective. Deviating from these codes implies consequences. But what about the digital world? Individuals and companies may not necessarily set out to engage in deliberate unethical behaviors or outcomes. Rather, we observe that, when it comes to ethics, processes in the digital world may contribute to unethical behaviors. Does tech reproduce or even exacerbate discrimination and inequality? How can digital ethics help shaping the online world, giving guidance about what actions are the right thing do to? This is what we want to explore with our guest Andreea Gorbatai, associate professor at Vlerick Business School, teacher and researcher about the impact of technology on entrepreneurship.

Breaking Point: San Diego’s Border Pollution Reaches Crisis Levels

Surfrider Foundation
This is the biggest national health crisis you've never heard of... The Pacific coastline along the U.S./Mexico border is steeped in rich multi-cultural identities, contains immense biodiversity, and contributes high economic value to both countries. Yet, this region is plagued by severe pollution that threatens public health, limits coastal access, hurts ecosystems and wildlife, and jeopardizes local economies and national security. Every day, millions of gallons of untreated sewage, toxic chemicals, and trash flow through the Tijuana River Watershed at the U.S./Mexico border. Our San Diego Surfrider Chapter has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years, and needs your support to bring this issue to the forefront of national attention. Ecosystems are being destroyed, beaches are closed a majority of the year in South San Diego County, and this onslaught of pollution is linked to common illnesses such as asthma, gastrointestinal issues, and skin infections. Even more severe illnesses like hepatitis and flesh eating bacteria have been reported by members of our Military and Border Patrol. 📝 Sign the Petition: https://www.surfrider.org/action/end-the-public-health-and-environmental-justice-emergency-at-the-usmexico-border?hsLang=en

Illicit Finance: Implications for National Security and the Need for a New Strategic Response
Illicit Finance: Implications for National Security and the Need for a New Strategic Response

IIEA
Ireland has over recent years become an increasingly important international financial centre. Trillions of euros of assets from overseas are either administered or domiciled in Ireland, often using complex financial structures involving multiple jurisdictions. Yet while successive Irish governments have been keen to reap the benefits of this ever more prominent role in the global financial system, far less attention has been paid to the multifaceted risks that accompany such significant flows of international capital. This keynote address to the IIEA considers the security threat from illicit finance, the extent to which existing responses are able to counter that threat, and what measures are required to make Ireland a genuinely hostile environment for money linked to criminal, corrupt and malign actors overseas. About the Speaker: Dr Alexander Chance is Head of Policy and Research at Transparency International (TI) Ireland, where he runs its programmes on anti-corruption and anti-money laundering. He is also a Senior Fellow with the Azure Forum for Contemporary Security Strategy and an Associate Fellow with RUSI’s Organised Crime and Policing Group. Alexander previously served in the UK National Crime Agency in operational, strategy and management roles focused on transnational organised crime, including five years working in South America, and has consulted for the UN and various other organisations. He obtained his PhD from Trinity College Dublin, where his research examined the relationship between organised crime, high-level corruption and peacebuilding in post-war Mozambique.

Europe must ensure its truck/bus industry is not only sustainable but can stay competitive globally

ACEA
In this one-on-one sit down with ACEA’s Director General, Harald Seidel sheds light on the indispensable role of trucks and buses in keeping Europe’s economy on the move. He elaborates on why policy makers should better recognise the differences with passenger cars when regulating the truck and bus sectors. Discussing the EU’s recent landmark agreement establishing the most ambitious CO2 reduction standards for trucks and buses globally, Seidel underscored the importance of ensuring equally ambitious enabling conditions, like robust charging infrastructure, are swiftly put in place. Juvenile Onset Systemic Sclerosis: Insights on an Orphan Disease
22 Mar 2024
ERN ReCONNET
Short description The primary goal of this webinar is to offer a comprehensive overview of Juvenile Systemic Sclerosis (jSSc), which encompasses various aspects, including distinctions between juvenile and adult-onset diseases in terms of clinical presentation, treatment approaches, and disease outcomes. JSSc is considered an orphan disease, with an estimated prevalence of only 3 cases per 1,000,000 children. In 2007, the International Inceptions Cohort for jSSc was established. This international, multicenter cohort is instrumental in promoting collaborative efforts for both research and patient and thus enhancing our understanding of this rare condition. Currently, the registry is actively enrolling 245 patients. During the webinar, recent insights derived from the registry will be presented. Additionally, recommendations for the management of jSSc patients and the main differences between adult and juvenile onset of SSc will be briefly discussed. The overarching purpose of this webinar is to raise awareness, disseminate critical knowledge, and cultivate a collaborative environment where healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers can engage in discussions about this challenging condition. Furthermore, this webinar is designed to heighten awareness of this rare condition among adult rheumatologists. Program of the webinar: - “Insights from the International Inceptions Cohort for Juvenile Systemic Sclerosis and SHARE Recommendations (Ivan Földvari, 20 minutes) - Comparing Adult and Juvenile Forms: Lessons from the Literature (Edoardo Marrani, 10 minutes) - Discussion Speakers Dr. Ivan Földvari is a distinguished specialist in paediatric rheumatology, with a particular focus on juvenile onset systemic sclerosis (jSSc). He works at the Hamburger Zentrum Für Kinder- Und Jugendrheumatologie, Hamburg, Germany. His contributions to the field include serving as the Chair of the Scleroderma working group within the Pediatric Rheumatology European Society till 2023. He has played an active role in the SHARE initiative dedicated to jSSc and has made valuable contributions to the development of the EULAR/EUSTAR Treatment Guidelines for SSc. He is the principal investigator of the International Inceptions cohort for jSSc. Dr. Edoardo Marrani is a Pediatric Rheumatology Unit, AOU Meyer IRCCS, Firenze, Italy. He is an expert working in an ERN ReCONNET Full Member center; he is a member of the ERN ReCONNET Task Force on Transitional Care recently established. ''With the water availability, we are fine. Without it, our suffering would be greater,'' says Qasem Hamamdeh, a Palestinian living in the West Bank's southern hills. On World Water Day, 58,133 Palestinians in Area C continue to suffer from limited access to a sufficient quantity of water for drinking and domestic purposes, in part due to the lack of an official water network. The EU has teamed up with 13 countries to build water networks, like the one in Masafer Yatta, to ensure access to clean, affordable water for thousands of Palestinians. European Parliament
Migration is one of the main concerns for Europeans nowadays. In this interview, the chair of Parliament’s home affairs committee, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, insists that it should not be seen as a threat, but as a fact that requires a joint approach by all EU countries. As the EU finalises the adoption of new rules to improve migration and asylum management, López Aguilar says that the so-called migration package is “a step forward”, but “it will not be the end of the story”. “There will be some other pending issues which are not comprehended in the package and are extremely relevant,” such as cracking down on the business model of smugglers and the trafficking of human beings, and establishing a European search and rescue framework, he said. Such a transition is good for people, the economy and nature. Public, private, not-for-profit and philanthropic actors are all essential. The event aims to explore the potential of neuroscience in shaping economic and policy decisions for Africa’s development. The webinar, held on 13 March 2024, featured presentations from experts in various fields. Topics ranged from the transition to a brain-positive economy and its implications for different income groups, to the interplay between brain capital, sustainability, gender equity, public-private and climate dynamics. Focusing on building African brain capital in the next 50 years is crucial for several reasons: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Brain capital, which includes brain health and skills, plays a pivotal role in achieving all of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. By investing in brain capital technologies and research that promotes brain health, we can cultivate productive, healthy brains capable of advancing our society. Economic Growth: Brain capital can drive economic growth by dealing with economic strain, productivity slowdown, and the need for more industrial innovation. It provides a lens for dealing with these challenges and can introduce a paradigm shift to our understanding and agency in brain health. Health and Well-being: Given the critical need to nurture healthier, more resilient, and increasingly flexible brains worldwide, building brain capital is essential. It prioritizes brain skills and brain health, which are fundamental to individual and societal well-being. Gender equity: Women and girls are especially vulnerable to trauma and neurological disease, education disruptions, and disproportionately serve as caregivers (both for children and elders) and share in the breadwinning. Yet, public policy has not addressed this gender disparity and women’s particular needs, even though the effects of poor brain health effect the entire family. Climate Dynamics: Brain capital can also help in understanding and addressing the interplay between our brains and climate dynamics, including extreme weather, air pollution, and green skills. Societal Challenges: Optimizing brain health and investing in building cognitive and brain capital is fundamental to meet modern societal challenges. Building African brain capital is not just about improving individual health outcomes; it’s about fostering sustainable development, driving economic growth, and meeting societal challenges head-on. It’s an investment in the future of Africa and the world. Case studies were also presented on the practical application of these concepts in specific African countries. The event concluded with a panel discussion featuring distinguished experts from academia, investment firms, and international organizations. They engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on the role of neuroscience in policy and investment decisions for building Africa’s brain capital. The webinar was organised by the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association (EMEA) in collaboration with the Brain Capital Alliance and Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. Agenda; Moderator: Prof. Rym Ayadi, EMEA President and Founder, Co-lead of the Brain Capital Alliance, CEPS Senior Advisor Speakers: Harris A. Today, many companies use legal loopholes, making human rights violations the norm rather than the exception in supply chains around the world. It leaves the victims of crimes committed by these companies – workers and communities – trapped in a legal maze seeking justice. Workers are raising their voices, demanding a role in securing supply chains. Citizens across Europe can no longer tolerate this injustice. How can we shift from profit-driven priorities to preventing violations? European citizens are rallying for change! Unions, workers, NGOs and politicians are now knocking on the doors of the European Union to strengthen corporate accountability and democracy at work.

EU Energy
Ecodesign and Energy labelling are one of the biggest success stories in the implementation of the single Market in the EU: a single set of rules applies to any product model, instead of 27 or possible more different legislations, a simplification helping abate the production and selling costs, but also increasing the energy efficiency of all products, resulting in lower energy bills on consumers and the business. Ecodesign targets manufactures, with specific requirements in the design, for more sustainable reliable and repairable products that are also more efficiently recycled at end of life. Energy labelling targets the customers of those products, by providing a set of tools for orienting the purchase choice towards the best of them, but also stimulating manufacturers to design more and more sustainable products, aiming to appear in the highest classes of the label. A powerful and synergic effect! More info on energy labelling and ecodesign: https://europa.eu/!YP9JBd #EnergyEfficiency #EnergyLabel #EnergyLabelling

#betd24 Panel: Sustainability Standards in Green Hydrogen
21 Mar 2024
Berlin Energy Transi...
Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Sustainability Standards in Green Hydrogen moderated by Dr. Melinda Crane. Green hydrogen, produced with renewable energy, is going to play an important role in achieving greenhouse-gas neutrality - through decarbonisation of non-electrifiable sectors, replacement of grey hydrogen in chemical industry, provision of long-duration energy storage, and as a component of synthetic fuels for transport. However, in a number of countries domestic supply will not be sufficient to satisfy domestic demand, necessitating imports of green hydrogen both in the short and long run. Currently, the global green-hydrogen industry is still in an early phase, where pilot projects are being set up, but an international market with physical trade of green hydrogen and its derivatives has not yet developed. The session first takes stock of the current situation and then discusses the remaining challenges for suppliers and offtakers of green hydrogen that have to be solved in order to push-start international trade in the commodity. It also debates possible and essential pathways in the transformation of grey-hydrogen production through low-carbon intermediates to green-hydrogen production. The focus in the subsequent discussion is on the challenge of proliferating, non-uniform or missing sustainability standards for the production and transport of green hydrogen. Sustainability standards here include both the regulatory requirements for electricity procurement and greenhouse gas thresholds, as well as criteria to judge the social and ecological impacts in producer countries. Participants first discuss whether unclear sustainability standards are an impediment for international market development. They then debate how these standards could be harmonised regarding design, methodology, and governance – while taking into account both the necessities of the industry and the developmental needs of the producer countries. Apart from that, possibilities of interoperability and recommendations how to best cope with differing standards will be explored. Finally, session participants debate the role of green-hydrogen diplomacy in increasing the sustainability impact of international green-hydrogen projects. How can diplomacy help to make green-hydrogen trade a win-win business, with fair and sustainable rewards for both producer and consumer countries and their societies? Deep Dive session @BETD.24 on Decentralized Renewable Energy for Industrial and Commercial Zones moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi. Captive power plants are installed by industrial or commercial organisations on their sites. They are deemed “captive” because the electricity generated is not fed into the grid but is rather for the company’s own (and sometimes for neighboring communities’) use . During this session we only refer to clean captive installations powered by renewable energies. In the face of high-energy costs and, in some countries, frequent power shortages and lack of efficient transmission infrastructure, captive use of renewable energies can help mitigate these challenges the industry and commerce are encountering. 21 Mar 2024
Berlin Energy Transi...
Deep Dive @BETD.24 on Holistic Solutions for Food and Water Supply Powered by Renewables moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi. The Energy-Water-Food Nexus refers to the interconnections and interdependencies between energy, water, and food systems. Holistic agricultural solutions that integrate renewable energy sources can contribute to sustainable and resilient approaches for ensuring an adequate and secure supply of water and food. Agri PV also referred to as agrivoltaics or solar farming, offers farms the opportunity to cultivate crops in a more resource-efficient manner and creating new synergies: They enable dual land use, allowing agricultural activities to continue underneath solar panels. This optimises land use, particularly valuable in areas where land is scarce or expensive. Moreover, studies have shown that the partial shading provided by solar panels in Agri PV systems can reduce evaporation, maintain soil moisture, and moderate temperature extremes, resulting in improved crop yields. Additionally, farmers can use electricity generated by on-site solar panels to power their agricultural operations, reducing energy costs and reliance on the grid, thus mitigating the impact of fluctuating energy prices. Other technologies such as solar irrigation systems (sometimes paired with water-efficient drip irrigation) have become widely recognised in certain parts of the world often replacing diesel pumps. Solar irrigation holds great promise, especially for smallholder farmers in the Global South who depend on rainfed agriculture and are thus particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. However, they often lack access to knowledge, technology and financing to adopt such solutions. Furthermore, solar offers significant potential along agricultural value chains, enabling better preservation and local processing of crops in off-grid areas. This not only enhances food security but also contributes to climate resilience of communities. During this Deep Dive, we will delve into strategies for driving the energy transition in agriculture, pinpointing remaining obstacles and identifying incentives required for progress. Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Just Transition & Gender - Leave No One Behind moderated by Dr. Melinda Crane. As the expansive adoption of renewable energy gains momentum and economies are moving away from fossil fuels, we need to make the transformation ahead of us equitable and inclusive and treat it as an opportunity to dismantle structural disadvantages. By upscaling renewable energy sources in off-grid areas, we can provide reliable access to electricity in remote areas and thus strengthen participation. The need for skilled workers also holds the chance to break down entry barriers that women, especially those experiencing multiple forms of discrimination, and other minorities face. Only if they have a seat at the negotiation table, we can create energy systems that acknowledge the needs of people from different regions, backgrounds and gender. To initiate meaningful action and facilitate lasting change, awareness of the interconnectedness of gender and diversity must be raised within all social, institutional and political bodies, including within the energy sector. Intersectional perspectives are needed to raise awareness of different, complex forms of discrimination prevalent in our societies today. If we want to create a holistic energy system that works for everyone we need to consider multiple perspectives and knowledge and embrace diversity in decision making. In this panel discussion we will take a look at the steps that need to be taken in terms of policy design and energy planning in order to achieve a just and equitable energy transition. An intersectional approach prevents us from combating one form of discrimination at the expense of another. We will also debate the role of privileged groups in reshaping the structures that perpetuate discrimination and the concept of allyship. Berlin Energy Transi...
Deep Dive session @BETD.24 on Community Engagement & Indigenous Knowledge moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi. Wildfires were breaking records this year and devastating droughts have affected the Amazon region while deforestation rates remain high. Even though Indigenous cultures have contributed the least to the climate crisis, they are often among the first to face its dire consequences. At the same time, the rights of indigenous peoples are rarely adequately represented in negotiations even though they possess tremendous traditional knowledge about the interconnectedness of the natural world. It is increasingly acknowledged that the recognition of Indigenous peoples’ rights is one of the most effective ways of safeguarding our remaining carbon sinks. Consequently, no roadmap to a just energy transition is complete without including the voices of Indigenous communities. What is more, community engagement can be crucial in ensuring local acceptance and connectivity of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Against this backdrop, this studio session will explore the importance of community engagement and Indigenous knowledge for the energy transition. We will hear from experts about successful community-led energy projects and consider the challenges and opportunities of incorporating Indigenous knowledge into energy planning. We will also discuss policy recommendations for an inclusive and participatory energy transition, including considerations for stakeholder engagement, cultural sensitivity, and intergenerational equity. #betd24 Panel: Financing an Accelerated Coal Phase-Out - Challenges and Solutions
21 Mar 2024
Berlin Energy Transi...
Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Financing an Accelerated Coal Phase-Out - Challenges and Solutions moderated by Jennifer Porto. The science is clear: to keep the 1.5 degrees goal within reach, countries need to immediately end the construction of new coal power plants and phase out existing plants by 2030 in the OECD and EU, and by 2040 elsewhere. Momentum is growing with the Powering Past Coal Alliance as the leading international initiative for phasing out coal power welcoming twelve new members at COP28. Its membership now comprises almost 170 national and subnational governments and companies from the energy and finance sector. However, billions of dollars of public and especially private money are still being invested in the coal sector. In order to ensure a phase out of coal power, public and private finance flows have to be redirected from supporting coal towards renewable energy. At the same time, the retirement of coal power plants before the end of their lifetime requires a diverse range of policy measures and innovative financing solutions for the coal-to-clean transition as part of the broader efforts to align financial flows with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Examples include carbon pricing and air quality standards on the one hand, and new initiatives such as the Asian Development Bank’s Energy Transition Mechanism launched at COP27 and France-led Coal Transition Accelerator initiative at COP28 on the other hand. How especially existing coal assets and new investments including from the private sector into coal can be ended and what methods exists, should be discussed in this session.
