Why do we need to look at IPM approaches for strawberry? Well, aphid and capsid control is always something that a grower is concerned about and during the past year (2020/21), several actives e.g. calypso, have been withdrawn. This means that growers increasingly need new, cohesive and environmentally focused methods of dealing with these pests. AHDB Cereals & Oilseeds
With the chemical toolbox reducing, it is more important than ever before to take an integrated approach to disease management. In this session we look at different approaches to prevent, detect and control cereal diseases. Tim Parton (Brewood Park Farm) discusses how gaining better understanding of the nutritional and biological connection between soil and plants has led to him producing healthier plants that are less susceptible to disease attack, reducing his reliance on fungicides. We are also joined by Rosalind Martin (Bayer) who goes through the work being done on pre-symptomatic Septoria wheat disease detection (Rapid Disease Detection), and how this could be used on farm. Additionally, Patrick Stephenson (NIAB TAG) will talks about disease control strategies, and what can be done to manage fungicide resistance. ABOUT AHDB AHDB is a statutory levy board, funded by farmers, growers and others in the supply chain. Our purpose is to inspire our farmers, growers and industry to succeed in a rapidly changing world. During IoF2020 final event, a panel discussion was dedicated to gender inclusiveness in agri-tech. In this session, the Gender Task Force composed of IoF2020 and SmartAgriHubs was introduced and represented. Addressing gender inequality is essential to achieving sustainability in agriculture. Yet today, women in agriculture face a variety of challenges and constraints that their male counterparts do not – including lack of equal opportunities, wage inequality, lack of support due to social, economic, and political norms, etc. Within the session, we will talk with four outstanding ladies, about their valuable experiences, observations, and vision on closing the gender gap in Agri-Tech. The panelist discussed European policy, agriculture, farmers' initiatives, and the next steps in improving gender-balance. The panelist included Jovana Vlaskalin, Cynthia Giagnocavo, Doris Marquardt from the European Commission, Doris Letina from CEJA, Ntuthu Mbiko-Motshegoa and Antonella di Tonno.
