The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for the countries of the euro area. Like its predecessor -- the temporary European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) -- the ESM provides financial assistance to euro area Member States experiencing or threatened by financing difficulties.

PESCO - Permanent Structured Cooperation - aims to deepen defence cooperation between Member States. 26 Participating countries have committed to invest, plan, develop and operate defence capabilities together. PESCO is one of the key EU defence initiatives; together with the Coordinated Annual Review on Defence and the European Defence Fund. It combines cooperative defence projects and binding commitments from its 26 participating Member States. Member States can decide in which projects they want to participate.

Traversing European Coastlines (TREC) is a large-scale expedition that studies organisms and ecosystems at the places where the two major ecosystems – land and sea – meet along the entire European coastline. TREC is the first continent-wide project to study coastal ecosystems and their response to the environment, on scales from molecules to communities. Led by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) together with the Tara Ocean Foundation, the Tara OceanS Consortium, and the European Marine Biology Resource Centre (EMBRC), TREC also involves many national research institutes. The video shows the arrival of EMBL TREC’s Advanced Mobile Laboratory at Stazione Zoologica in Naples in April 2024. In this video lecture, research fellow Nicolò Rossetto (EUI) illustrates some of the results of the OneNet project with regard to customer engagement in markets for ancillary services. In particular, he discusses four questions: • Why do we need to engage customers in markets for ancillary services? • What are the barriers to customer engagement? • What can we do to overcome them? • Are consumer-centric markets for ancillary services the way forward? Participation of consumers is important to ensure a cost-effective operation of electricity systems characterised by high shares of renewable and distributed generation. Despite significant efforts in recent years, participation remains limited though. This situation can be explained by the existence of a series of technical, economic, legal and behavioural barriers. The OneNet project has explored and identified some recommendations to overcome them and promote the emergence of more consumer-centric markets for ancillary services. With the globalisation of the economy and technological progress, architectural firms now have greater opportunities to collaborate and work on projects across borders, within the European Union and globally. According to the last edition of the ACE Sector Study, in 2022 5% of European architects worked in another EU Member State and two per cent outside the EU. The study also reveals that over the past year, 16% of respondents had seriously considered working in another EU Member State and 6% outside Europe, without however taking action. Moreover, an increasing number of architects are trained in countries other than their own, showing a genuine interest and growing capacity of the profession to move across borders. Therefore, there is every reason to believe that the potential for further internationalisation of the profession is strong, provided that professionals can find adequate support. The conference will aim to discuss the challenges inherent to cross-border work and export of services and present solutions to overcome barriers encountered by professionals, including tools and schemes offered by the European Union; guidance developed by the Architects’ Council of Europe; and support provided by professional bodies at national level. Architects who have successfully developed their business internationally will also share their experience. The ACE strongly supports the New European Bauhaus movement initiated by the EU Commission, as it helps to make the quality of our living environment a matter of public interest and elevates architecture to an unprecedented political level. Beyond business and entrepreneurial perspectives, the conference will also provide an opportunity to discuss the relevance of the NEB values, themes and principles for other parts of the world and emphasise the common values that unite the profession across the world.

CINEA organised a virtual info day on 8 April 2024 to explain the priorities and the application steps of the 2024 CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) call for proposals. The EGU General Assembly is comprised of numerous and diverse sessions, covering subjects from scientific to social. All of these are organised by community members. However, convening a session can be a little daunting, especially to those without experience such as first-time conveners and early career scientists. This webinar provided key tips on convening sessions, informed on the guidance for #EGU24, and answered audience queries. Speaking in this was Dan Evans, the Deputy Union-level Early Career Scientist Representative. Dan drew on his own experience of convening at multiple General Assemblies, including how to keep sessions running on time, introducing your speakers, and what is new for EGU’s hybrid posters. Audience's heard about engaging with OSPP awards and early steps to submitting and convening sessions for EGU25. The webinar lasted one hour and finished with an audience Q&A. Speaker: Dan Evans is a Lecturer in Soil Science at Cranfield University, UK. He is the Deputy Union-Level Early Career Scientist Representative, was previously the ECS Representative for the Soil System Sciences (SSS) Division. Dan has a wealth of experience of organizing and chairing national and international conferences. In recent years, he chaired the Early Career Researcher conference for the British Society of Soil Science, hosting HRH The Duke of Gloucester, an ECR session for the European Soil Observatory, and his contributions are recognized at this year’s EGU General Assembly with an Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists.
