Launch Event on EWL Report on Cyber Violence
7 Oct 2024
EuropeanWomenLobby
In the era of digitalisation, the incidence of cyber violence against women and girls (CVAWG) is surging. The advent of new technologies, particularly social media, has transformed the way we engage and communicate online. As our identity expresses itself also online, cyber violence against women appears as a continuum of violence against women. The same gender stereotypes and misogyny which cause the already known forms of violence against women, manifest online with new forms and similar effects. The new EWL Report on Cyber Violence gives an overview of the forms of CVAWG, the policy framework and a set of policy recommendations to tackle the issue. Speechbag Podcast E03: Caruana Galizia's Legacy & What The EU Should Do To Protect Journalists, NGOs
4 Oct 2024
Civil Liberties Unio...
Matthew Caruana Galizia, the son of the murdered Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, goes in depth on the toll abusive lawsuits called SLAPPs have on journalists like his mother. A “SLAPP” is a strategic lawsuit against public participation. The term refers to abusive legal actions whose point is not to genuinely assert a right, but to drain the resources, damage the reputation and destroy the personal lives of those they target. Businesses, politicians and public figures use their wealth and power to bring to court journalists, activists and rights defenders exposing harmful practices with cases they know they will not win, just to drag costly legal proceedings for years. Their objective is to silence them and scare off others from even trying to investigate and raise awareness on their wrongdoings. In this episode our host Jonathan Day talks to Matthew Caruana Galizia, the son of the murdered Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia about the abusive lawsuits that made his mother's life impossible. The new speechbag podcast is also joined by Liberties' advocacy expert Linda Ravo who talks about what the EU could do to defend activists and watchdogs from malicious lawsuits, and about what NGOs and the public are already doing to stop SLAPPs. Speechbag Podcast E04: COVID-19 Tracing Apps: Germany’s Lessons For Europe
4 Oct 2024
Civil Liberties Unio...
What can we learn from Germany’s rush to create two coronavirus tracing apps? Quite a lot – but maybe not what you’d guess. At first Germany was feted for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The first wave was weathered comparatively well, the government seemed to be acting fast and decisively, and the country’s contact tracing app, while far from perfect, was popular and privacy friendly. That changed quickly. As the second wave got out of control, there was panic by the public and politicians. They look for a new panacea against the virus, endorsing yet another contact tracing app. But this one carried far more risks. On this episode of SpeechBag, we talk to Christian Thoennes, the author of a new report on lessons learned from Germany’s developments of two contact tracing apps. Orsi Reich, a senior advocacy officer at Liberties, also joins to discuss how people and politicians alike reacted to the developments. Speechbag Podcast E05: Privacy, Propaganda And The Future Of Online Advertising
4 Oct 2024
Civil Liberties Unio...
Dutch MEP Paul Tang, Karolina Iwanska of the Panoptykon Foundation and Eva Simon from Liberties join Speechbag to detail the continuing abuse of internet users’ personal information by Big Tech. Your location, religion, political convictions, even sexual orientation – it’s all information that online platforms like Facebook track about the users and then offer to advertisers. This allows them to create advertisements that are specifically targeting you, using information you never thought they could have. And when it’s used for political parties, it can threaten our democracy and free and fair elections. By feeding people only information that will interest or even enrage them, they become tracked in echo chambers that prevent them from hearing opposing or alternative viewpoints. This makes people angrier, more polarized, and less informed. And we’ve seen the consequences of this on election day. Member of the European Parliament Paul Tang of the Netherlands, Karolina Iwanska of the Panoptykon Foundation and Eva Simon from Liberties join the Speechbag podcast to discuss the threats of targeted advertising and what the EU could do about it. Speechbag Podcast E06: Countering Smear Campaigns And Protecting Civic Space
4 Oct 2024
Civil Liberties Unio...
Márta Pardavi of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee discusses the status of democracy and civic space in Hungary, and Israel Butler discusses how progressive campaigners can grow support for their issues simply by changing how they talk about them. Civil society organisations (CSOs) make democracy work for all of us. They keep us informed to make sure our governments don’t abuse the powers we've given them. To mark International Human Rights Day, held every December 10th, Liberties is releasing a new guide from our head of advocacy, Israel Butler, on how progressive campaigners counter smear campaigns against them and make sure CSOs are valued and supported by the public. How can they do this? By changing how they talk about their causes and the issues that matter to all of us. For example, instead of focusing on the problem, or repeating smear attacks, we should be talking about what we have in common and how we can achieve the goals we have and build the societies we want to live in. This is especially important in counties like Hungary, where civic space has been squeezed and CSOs are under constant attack from the government. Democracy and the rule of law are being crushed by the constant slide towards authoritarianism, and, with an election looming, the government appears ready to ramp up its smear campaigns. Marta Pardavi, the co-chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, discusses the current lay of the land in Hungary and how her organization is using values-based framing to grow support despite the situation in Hungary. Speechbag Podcast E07: Do Mandatory Vaccinations Violate Human Rights?
4 Oct 2024

Liberties' Senior Advocacy Officer Orsolya Reich answers the question of whether mandatory vaccinations schemes actually violate human rights. Many European countries have considered mandatory vaccination schemes, and some, like Austria, are pushing ahead with them. That's brought protesters into the streets by the thousands. They claim mandatory vaccines violate human rights. But do human rights groups agree? Orsolya Reich, a senior advocacy officer at Liberties, joins the Speechbag podcast to discuss why this is not necessarily a human rights issue. Speechbag Podcast E09: The Secret Meetings, Lobbying, and 'Horse Trading' of EU Lawmaking
4 Oct 2024
Civil Liberties Unio...
European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly on the secret meetings that shape EU laws - closed to the public, but open to lobbyists, giving Big Tech and others have the last word. Why are EU laws still agreed upon in secretive meetings shut off from the public? The Speechbag podcast spoke with European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly to discuss the lack of transparency around the trilogue process, when representatives of the EU Commission, Parliament, and Council meet to finalize the texts of our laws. Getting even the most basic information, like who attends the meetings and what their official positions are on a draft law, can be difficult – if not impossible – for the public. “Decisions are being made without [citizens’] input,” Ombudsman O’Reilly told Speechbag. “It feeds into an anti-EU, hostile, Eurosceptic mindset.” But guess who’s not shut out of the process? Lobbyists. Max Bank, a researcher and campaigner with the German organization LobbyControl, spoke to Speechbag about the extent to which lobbyists can influence laws and distort the democratic process. He says there are currently some 36,000 lobbyists working in Brussels, backed by a yearly budget of 97 million euros. All of this means that it’s the wishes of corporations, not citizens, that are often given priority when EU laws are finalized. Check out the latest episode of the Speechbag podcast to see how the laws Europeans live under are created out of view from them, and how Big Tech and other corporate interests get the last word. Speechbag Podcast E11: Born In Italy – But Never Italian?
4 Oct 2024
Civil Liberties Unio...
Oiza Queens Day Obasuyi of CILD talks about the push to change Italy’s citizenship law, which deprives so many children who were born in Italy of citizenship. Now, with a right-wing government set to take power, the future is more uncertain than ever. Some 900,000 children born, raised and schooled in Italy are nevertheless denied Italian citizenship. They are denied recognition from the only home they’ve ever known. Why? Because their parents aren’t Italian. Italy’s citizenship is generally based on jus sanguinis – Latin for 'right of blood'. That means that at least one of your parents must be Italian in order for your to naturally get citizenship. Otherwise, even if you are born and lived your whole life in Italy, you have to wait until the age of 18 and then apply through a long, difficult, seemingly designed-to-fail process. Will new far-right government sink reform? But human rights groups are campaigning to change the law. The Speechbag podcast talked to Oiza Queens Day Obasuyi, a junior researcher and program assistant at the Italian Coalition for Civil Liberties and Rights. Will the far-right government of Giorgia Meloni sink any hope of reform? We spoke with Oiza about how politicians either deprioritize the issue or outright oppose reform, couching it in typical xenophobic, anti-immigration rhetoric. Speechbag Podcast E12: Qatargate, Corruption And A ‘Culture Of Impunity’
4 Oct 2024
Civil Liberties Unio...
Nicholas Aiossa, Deputy Director of Transparency International – EU, discusses the bribery and money laundering scandal that’s shaken the European Parliament and how to clean up its ‘culture of impunity’. Dozens of police raids, the arrest of a sitting MEP, millions of euros stuffed in suitcases and hidden in apartments – the Qatargate scandal seemed ripped from a movie and shocked many. But not everyone. Nicholas Aiossa, Deputy Director of Transparency International – EU, told Speechbag there’s nothing surprising about the scandal, and that corruption and a lack of transparency have been “business as usual” for the Parliament. For instance, there is still no oversight or transparency over how MEPs spend some €40 million in allowance money; lobbying by big corporations or countries is commonplace, again with little accountability. So will the Parliament finally clean up its act? Does the recently announced 14-point plan have the teeth needed to curb the corruption and impunity in the EU’s “most democratic body”? Tune into the latest episode of the Speechbag podcast to find out. Implementing Recommendations from International Human Rights Instruments
23 Sep 2024
FNF Europe
Implementing Recommendations from International Human Rights Instruments: Roadmap for a better Cambodia The human rights situation in Cambodia remains dire, with continued crackdowns on dissent, arbitrary detention of activists, and violations of constitutional and international laws. Human Rights Watch's report on the February 2024 elections highlights widespread intimidation and harassment. Little progress has been made since the 2023 Special Rapporteur's findings, with ongoing concerns about land grabs and low representation of women in politics. A side-event will bring together civil society, diplomats, and international partners to discuss these issues, focusing on implementing UPR recommendations and advancing human rights, civil and political rights, and the role of women and youth.
