The 1st Energy Community breakfast session highlighted the case of the Novi Otok energy cooperative in Croatia as well as providing national context about the energy community landscape in Croatia. Key points covered in the session are included below: • Novi Otok focus on empowering people and are adapting into a new decentralised system as they are based on an island. • Ivan presented tips and tricks that he felt were important for energy communities, particularly in their early stages: - Relying on proven technologies to ensure investment and gain interest from citizens, before then looking to shift behaviour - Investing in both small and large projects - Synergy of sectors - Continuous dialogue with members - Focussing on direct needs of local citizens to build community trust • They focussed on PV as a proven technology and have put PV installations on the local library. • Ivan also spoke about EUCF utilised / SECAP and an online platform for local impact investments. The cooperative are promoting crowdfunding as a means of generating the necessary financing for the energy cooperative. Both through investors and community members. The 2nd Energy Community Breakfast Session highlighted the operations and successes of Biozon, an energy community in the Netherlands founded on the principle of cost-effective power, delivering energy that flows through your socket that won't hit you in your pocket. Founded in 2019, Biozon's initiative began with a power purchasing agreement at a fixed price of 0.055 cent per kWh with Agem Municipal Energy. The community uses a landfill gas installation as a source of power generation. The model entails procuring additional electricity from other energy communities within the Netherlands when required and resorting to the conventional market only as a last option. This approach aligns with Biozon's mission of promoting sustainable and affordable energy. Currently, the project involves 60 households, supplied through Agem, which holds the requisite permit. Notably, the landfill gas installation has been producing more energy than initially anticipated, marking a significant success for the project. Comunità Energitica Rinnovabile Rosetana APS, referred to more colloquially as Comunità Energetica Rinnovabile di Roseto Valfortore, is a rural EC in Apulia, Italy. The EC celebrated the inauguration of their first 6kW renewable energy installation on January 27th, 2023. The EC is actively pursuing other innovative activities in the near future, by maximising their income with the GSE incentive on shared energy using smart meters, exploring opportunities for storage, e-mobility and district heating. The EC’s “leasing model” is a unique way of reducing the initial financial burden on the community and offers a valuable lesson to other communities in their early stages, as well as the ECs’ ability to take advantage of the incentives available in Italy through self-consumption and shared energy. Currently, the community has 30 members and has a driving ambition to increase self-consumption to cover 100% of its citizens, reducing their financial costs for energy and eventually becoming autonomous from an energy perspective. Florence School of R...
In this video lecture, research fellow Nicolò Rossetto (EUI) illustrates some of the results of the OneNet project with regard to customer engagement in markets for ancillary services. In particular, he discusses four questions: • Why do we need to engage customers in markets for ancillary services? • What are the barriers to customer engagement? • What can we do to overcome them? • Are consumer-centric markets for ancillary services the way forward? Participation of consumers is important to ensure a cost-effective operation of electricity systems characterised by high shares of renewable and distributed generation. Despite significant efforts in recent years, participation remains limited though. This situation can be explained by the existence of a series of technical, economic, legal and behavioural barriers. The OneNet project has explored and identified some recommendations to overcome them and promote the emergence of more consumer-centric markets for ancillary services. To dig deeper, you may read two relevant OneNet deliverables: • D 3.3 – Recommendations for Consumer-Centric Products and Efficient Market Design, available at: https://www.onenet-project.eu//wp-content/uploads/2023/11/OneNet_D3.3_V1.0.pdf • D 11.5 – Recommendations for customer engagement strategies, available at: https://www.onenet-project.eu//wp-content/uploads/2023/07/OneNet-Deliverable-D11.5_v1.0.pdf Part of the content of those deliverables is also introduced in the following blogposts: • How to design markets for the provision of electricity system services and enhance consumer engagement?, available at: https://fsr.eui.eu/onenet-design-markets-for-the-provision-of-electricity-system-services-and-enhance-consumer-engagement/ • Flexibility from consumers: four set of barriers to overcome, available at: https://fsr.eui.eu/flexibility-from-consumers-four-set-of-barriers-to-overcome/

Compass Lexecon’s Executive VP Fabien Roques and Chair of Eurelectric working group on Wholesale Market Design & Investment Frameworks, engage in a TRUE or FALSE game on Contracts for Differences (CfDs) In the flagship study “Electricity market design, Fit for Net Zero”, Eurelectric and Compass Lexecon defined high-level recommendations on CfDs and other types of long-term contracts, stressing that guidance for the design of public de-risking schemes should be developed on best practices. The recent reform of the electricity market design puts forward two-sided CfDs (and equivalent schemes) as the single support mechanism for direct price support to new capacity. However, the reform leaves a range of design issues open. Against this backdrop, Eurelectric and Compass Lexecon released a new study, ‘Unlocking the power of CfDs to accelerate the energy transition’, which: –Highlights key challenges and trade-offs associated with design and implementation of two-way CfDs for RES and low-carbon technologies –Includes a range of alternatives addressing these key challenges –Provides guidance on best practices to design an efficient CfD Download the executive summary: https://cdn.eurelectric.org/media/6981/eurelectric-cl-unlocking-the-power-of-cfds_es-h-02DFC428.pdf?_gl=1*2a6ajr*_ga*NjE2NDU1MjQ2LjE3MDIzODM0NDE.*_ga_CB82F90MQ6*MTcxMjY2MTkwNy4yMjIuMS4xNzEyNjYxOTk4LjM5LjAuMA.. As renewable energy sources are gaining popularity, grid congestion emerges as a critical challenge. The imbalance between energy demand and supply often forces a fallback on fossil fuels to bridge this gap. However, as the urgency for decarbonization grows, the need for alternative solutions becomes pressing. Energy storage has presented itself as a key player in the transition to a renewable energy future. While lithium-ion batteries are a commonly used storage solution, their short-term storage capacity falls short. Long-duration energy storage (LDES), spanning thermal, electrochemical, mechanical, or electrochemical storage, emerges as a promising solution for shifting energy over extended periods. LDES unlocks opportunities not addressed by shorter-duration alternatives, such as increasing renewable energy shares in the energy supply, reinforcing grid resilience in remote areas, and enabling cost-efficient 24/7 renewable power purchase agreements. Join us for an insightful webinar where industry experts delve into long-duration storage capabilities and applications. Through real-world case studies and discussions, we will explore the role of long-duration energy storage in paving the way toward a more resilient and efficient energy infrastructure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 🔗 For more insights and events, visit - https://bit.ly/3vYZriN

In Sweden, there has been nationwide coverage of municipal energy and climate advisors for almost three decades. These counsellors offer free, technology-neutral advice to the general public, organizations, and small and medium-sized businesses on all matters related to energy. Find out more: https://iea.li/EETW | https://www.iea.org/reports/energy-efficiency-for-affordability Energy efficiency continues to play a critical role in improving living standards around the world and is the first and best response to simultaneously meet affordability, supply security and climate goals. As African countries look to drive forward their clean energy transition in the face of the global climate and energy crises, there is a growing role for energy efficiency in supporting their aims to ensure affordable, reliable access to electricity while allowing greater integration of renewable energy technologies. The International Energy Agency (IEA) held its Africa Energy Efficiency Policy in Emerging Economies Training Week in Nairobi from 18-21 March. Hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum of Kenya, and with support from the African Development Bank, it marked a key milestone in the IEA’s growing work on energy efficiency with African countries. The training week brought together almost 200 policy makers and energy professionals from across the continent to share experience and expertise in energy efficiency policy and to underline the role efficiency can play as emerging and developing economies work to meet their energy and climate goals. With a population growing faster than any other region in the world, Africa’s electricity demand is expected to grow by 75% by 2030. According to IEA’s Sustainable Africa Scenario, a key challenge for African policymakers and leaders is to ensure universal access to modern energy services by 2030, which means accelerating the current progress by three times. As underscored during IEA’s recent 2024 Ministerial Meeting, reaching energy efficiency, universal energy access and clean energy goals in the region depends on developing effective financing and investment mechanisms. #energy #energytransitions #energyefficiency

28 Mar 2024
Solarplaza
This webinar on March 27th included a research-oriented presentation about grid capacity from DNV and a financial analysis overview from impact fund Start Green Capital. Grid capacity scarcity is a pressing issue in need of urgent attention, as it is hindering Dutch decarbonization efforts and the integration of renewables and other low-carbon technologies in the Dutch energy system. DNV, on behalf of Agora Energiewende, has assessed the problem of grid scarcity in key European countries. The traditional approach of grid reinforcements faces limitations due to lengthy permitting processes, workforce shortages, and inadequate regulatory/financial incentives. The slow pace of grid reinforcements prompts the exploration of alternative solutions by DSOs, including demand-side flexibility (DSF) mechanisms, technical solutions, and smart operation strategies. Both grid reinforcements and alternative solutions are deemed necessary to address grid capacity scarcity effectively. As one of the largest impact fund managers in the Netherlands, Start Green Capital has invaluable experience and know-how to share regarding project financing in the Dutch solar market context. Since 2006, they have been building a sustainable economy together with impact entrepreneurs, distinguishing themselves with a broad spectrum of financing options: equity, convertible loans, senior loans, junior loans, and guarantees, or a combination of these. During the webinar, they shared insights and best practices. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 🔗 For more insights and events, visit - https://bit.ly/3vYZriN

DECARBONISING THE EU BUILDING STOCK UNDER THE EPBD: BRINGING TOGETHER EPCs AND RENOVATION PASSPORTS
28 Mar 2024
Leonardo ENERGY
The revised EPBD is going through its final stages of approval, making it a crucial time for European building policy. The focus now shifts to implementation of its key provisions to decarbonise our buildings and meet our climate objectives. Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are used all over Europe to show buildings’ energy efficiency; however, they do not ignite renovation. Renovation Passports are promoted to support deep renovation but are costly and effort intensive. The iBRoad2EPC project aims to connect EPCs with the Renovation Passports. It improves EPC recommendations to outline an individual plan for staged renovation aligned with climate objectives. It expands, improves and broadens their format and joint scope, to consider additional features (indoor air quality, smart readiness, etc.) and become broadly applicable to a range of building types across Europe. It also enables and inspires tailored solutions for links between the various schemes (EPC software, databases or one-stop shops) existing in different countries. This webinar explain how iBRoad2EPC contributes to decarbonising buildings through these key provisions of the EPBD!

Solar Cities Webinar: Public Procurement Supporting Solar
27 Mar 2024
SolarPower Europe
The EU has recently agreed on reaching a 42,5% renewables share in final energy consumption, almost doubling its current deployment. While these targets are defined at EU level, most renewable installations will happen at local level. With around 80% of the EU population living in urban areas, cities and local authorities are the perfect candidates to accelerate the energy transition, and supply their citizens with secure, affordable and sustainable energy. In the coming years, cities and local communities will be at the center of the deployment of solar energy and will face an increasing demand for sourcing solar power. But how to make sure that this increased demand for renewables contributes to bringing added value to local project developers, citizens, and the industry? The Net-Zero Industry Act in parallel sets rules for public procurement, auctions and rooftop participation in the market. Although further details are to be defined with an Implementing Act, Member States can apply prequalification and award criteria such as environmental sustainability, cybersecurity, responsible business conduct or resilience in tenders. The aim of this webinar is to explore local solutions for sourcing local energy, and how cities can become drivers, not only for the energy transition, but also for European industrial development. The webinar will first introduce the current state of play of green public procurement, then will elaborate on good practices and leave the space to exchange on forward-looking solutions.

Throughout our daily lives, we often take electricity for granted. Whether it is to deliver online education throughout a global pandemic, charge your smartphone to keep in touch with family, or simply keep the lights on, electricity is there. As our society progresses and as we continue to decarbonise, electricity will become ever more present. It will power your car. It will heat your home. It will power ever smarter solutions, and it will come from a wide range of decentralised clean energy sources. More electricity will be needed for greater decarbonisation. Keeping the lights on, though, needs the right enablers. As electrification accelerates, the grid that delivers it needs to be expanded and digitalised. Keeping the lights on cannot be taken for granted anymore. At Power Summit 2024, we will be discussing the challenges we face and the opportunities there are to keep the lights on.

The Push & Pull Effect of Ecodesign and Energy Labelling

EU Energy
Ecodesign and Energy labelling are one of the biggest success stories in the implementation of the single Market in the EU: a single set of rules applies to any product model, instead of 27 or possible more different legislations, a simplification helping abate the production and selling costs, but also increasing the energy efficiency of all products, resulting in lower energy bills on consumers and the business. Ecodesign targets manufactures, with specific requirements in the design, for more sustainable reliable and repairable products that are also more efficiently recycled at end of life. Energy labelling targets the customers of those products, by providing a set of tools for orienting the purchase choice towards the best of them, but also stimulating manufacturers to design more and more sustainable products, aiming to appear in the highest classes of the label. A powerful and synergic effect! More info on energy labelling and ecodesign: https://europa.eu/!YP9JBd #EnergyEfficiency #EnergyLabel #EnergyLabelling

#betd24 Panel: Sustainability Standards in Green Hydrogen
21 Mar 2024
Berlin Energy Transi...
Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Sustainability Standards in Green Hydrogen moderated by Dr. Melinda Crane. Green hydrogen, produced with renewable energy, is going to play an important role in achieving greenhouse-gas neutrality - through decarbonisation of non-electrifiable sectors, replacement of grey hydrogen in chemical industry, provision of long-duration energy storage, and as a component of synthetic fuels for transport. However, in a number of countries domestic supply will not be sufficient to satisfy domestic demand, necessitating imports of green hydrogen both in the short and long run. Currently, the global green-hydrogen industry is still in an early phase, where pilot projects are being set up, but an international market with physical trade of green hydrogen and its derivatives has not yet developed. The session first takes stock of the current situation and then discusses the remaining challenges for suppliers and offtakers of green hydrogen that have to be solved in order to push-start international trade in the commodity. It also debates possible and essential pathways in the transformation of grey-hydrogen production through low-carbon intermediates to green-hydrogen production. The focus in the subsequent discussion is on the challenge of proliferating, non-uniform or missing sustainability standards for the production and transport of green hydrogen. Sustainability standards here include both the regulatory requirements for electricity procurement and greenhouse gas thresholds, as well as criteria to judge the social and ecological impacts in producer countries. Participants first discuss whether unclear sustainability standards are an impediment for international market development. They then debate how these standards could be harmonised regarding design, methodology, and governance – while taking into account both the necessities of the industry and the developmental needs of the producer countries. Apart from that, possibilities of interoperability and recommendations how to best cope with differing standards will be explored. Finally, session participants debate the role of green-hydrogen diplomacy in increasing the sustainability impact of international green-hydrogen projects. How can diplomacy help to make green-hydrogen trade a win-win business, with fair and sustainable rewards for both producer and consumer countries and their societies? Deep Dive session @BETD.24 on Decentralized Renewable Energy for Industrial and Commercial Zones moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi. Captive power plants are installed by industrial or commercial organisations on their sites. They are deemed “captive” because the electricity generated is not fed into the grid but is rather for the company’s own (and sometimes for neighboring communities’) use . During this session we only refer to clean captive installations powered by renewable energies. In the face of high-energy costs and, in some countries, frequent power shortages and lack of efficient transmission infrastructure, captive use of renewable energies can help mitigate these challenges the industry and commerce are encountering. Berlin Energy Transi...
Deep Dive @BETD.24 on Holistic Solutions for Food and Water Supply Powered by Renewables moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi. The Energy-Water-Food Nexus refers to the interconnections and interdependencies between energy, water, and food systems. Holistic agricultural solutions that integrate renewable energy sources can contribute to sustainable and resilient approaches for ensuring an adequate and secure supply of water and food. Agri PV also referred to as agrivoltaics or solar farming, offers farms the opportunity to cultivate crops in a more resource-efficient manner and creating new synergies: They enable dual land use, allowing agricultural activities to continue underneath solar panels. This optimises land use, particularly valuable in areas where land is scarce or expensive. Moreover, studies have shown that the partial shading provided by solar panels in Agri PV systems can reduce evaporation, maintain soil moisture, and moderate temperature extremes, resulting in improved crop yields. Additionally, farmers can use electricity generated by on-site solar panels to power their agricultural operations, reducing energy costs and reliance on the grid, thus mitigating the impact of fluctuating energy prices. Other technologies such as solar irrigation systems (sometimes paired with water-efficient drip irrigation) have become widely recognised in certain parts of the world often replacing diesel pumps. Solar irrigation holds great promise, especially for smallholder farmers in the Global South who depend on rainfed agriculture and are thus particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. However, they often lack access to knowledge, technology and financing to adopt such solutions. Furthermore, solar offers significant potential along agricultural value chains, enabling better preservation and local processing of crops in off-grid areas. This not only enhances food security but also contributes to climate resilience of communities. During this Deep Dive, we will delve into strategies for driving the energy transition in agriculture, pinpointing remaining obstacles and identifying incentives required for progress. Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Just Transition & Gender - Leave No One Behind moderated by Dr. Melinda Crane. As the expansive adoption of renewable energy gains momentum and economies are moving away from fossil fuels, we need to make the transformation ahead of us equitable and inclusive and treat it as an opportunity to dismantle structural disadvantages. By upscaling renewable energy sources in off-grid areas, we can provide reliable access to electricity in remote areas and thus strengthen participation. The need for skilled workers also holds the chance to break down entry barriers that women, especially those experiencing multiple forms of discrimination, and other minorities face. Only if they have a seat at the negotiation table, we can create energy systems that acknowledge the needs of people from different regions, backgrounds and gender. To initiate meaningful action and facilitate lasting change, awareness of the interconnectedness of gender and diversity must be raised within all social, institutional and political bodies, including within the energy sector. Intersectional perspectives are needed to raise awareness of different, complex forms of discrimination prevalent in our societies today. If we want to create a holistic energy system that works for everyone we need to consider multiple perspectives and knowledge and embrace diversity in decision making. In this panel discussion we will take a look at the steps that need to be taken in terms of policy design and energy planning in order to achieve a just and equitable energy transition. An intersectional approach prevents us from combating one form of discrimination at the expense of another. We will also debate the role of privileged groups in reshaping the structures that perpetuate discrimination and the concept of allyship. Deep Dive session @BETD.24 on Community Engagement & Indigenous Knowledge moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi. Wildfires were breaking records this year and devastating droughts have affected the Amazon region while deforestation rates remain high. Even though Indigenous cultures have contributed the least to the climate crisis, they are often among the first to face its dire consequences. At the same time, the rights of indigenous peoples are rarely adequately represented in negotiations even though they possess tremendous traditional knowledge about the interconnectedness of the natural world. It is increasingly acknowledged that the recognition of Indigenous peoples’ rights is one of the most effective ways of safeguarding our remaining carbon sinks. Consequently, no roadmap to a just energy transition is complete without including the voices of Indigenous communities. What is more, community engagement can be crucial in ensuring local acceptance and connectivity of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Against this backdrop, this studio session will explore the importance of community engagement and Indigenous knowledge for the energy transition. We will hear from experts about successful community-led energy projects and consider the challenges and opportunities of incorporating Indigenous knowledge into energy planning. We will also discuss policy recommendations for an inclusive and participatory energy transition, including considerations for stakeholder engagement, cultural sensitivity, and intergenerational equity. Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Financing an Accelerated Coal Phase-Out - Challenges and Solutions moderated by Jennifer Porto. The science is clear: to keep the 1.5 degrees goal within reach, countries need to immediately end the construction of new coal power plants and phase out existing plants by 2030 in the OECD and EU, and by 2040 elsewhere. Momentum is growing with the Powering Past Coal Alliance as the leading international initiative for phasing out coal power welcoming twelve new members at COP28. Its membership now comprises almost 170 national and subnational governments and companies from the energy and finance sector. However, billions of dollars of public and especially private money are still being invested in the coal sector. In order to ensure a phase out of coal power, public and private finance flows have to be redirected from supporting coal towards renewable energy. At the same time, the retirement of coal power plants before the end of their lifetime requires a diverse range of policy measures and innovative financing solutions for the coal-to-clean transition as part of the broader efforts to align financial flows with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Examples include carbon pricing and air quality standards on the one hand, and new initiatives such as the Asian Development Bank’s Energy Transition Mechanism launched at COP27 and France-led Coal Transition Accelerator initiative at COP28 on the other hand. How especially existing coal assets and new investments including from the private sector into coal can be ended and what methods exists, should be discussed in this session. Spotlight Session @BETD.24 on Investment in Transformation - The Future is Renewable(s) moderated by Melinda Crane. As the world continues to fight climate change, more and more money is being invested in the transition to clean, green energy. The agreement to triple renewables at cop28 in Dubai represents a step change in the world’s journey to a clean, secure and just energy future. In a sign of how much progress is being made, the International Energy Agency's world energy investment report predicts that solar investments will attract more than $1 billion a day by 2023. Led by solar, low-emission technologies are expected to account for nearly 90 percent of power generation investment. Yet, investment in clean energy technologies is still not significantly outpacing spending on fossil fuels; we need to make financial flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development. Furthermore, it is important to remember that investment flows into renewable energy and its technical components are currently unevenly distributed. There is also a need to reduce the cost of capital for developing countries to de-risk power system investments. The course for the energy of the future is being set now - in this session, we will look at financial instruments and policies that are essential to benefit the whole world. Berlin Energy Transi...
Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on A Global Renewables & Energy Efficiency Target – Commitment to Action moderated by Dr. Melinda Crane. With the Paris Agreement, we are committed to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. Limiting the rise of temperature to this threshold is still possible and requires a rapid end to the burning of fossil fuels, a faster increase in energy efficiency, and a significant expansion of renewable energy. At the COP28 in Dubai, the 198 signatory parties of the UNFCCC agreed to transition away from fossil fuels, to double the rate of energy-efficiency improvements and to triple renewable energy production capacities until 2030 – commitments that signal new momentum for the global energy transition. There are signs that warrant optimism: The global energy transition has picked up speed in recent times, driven by economies of scale in renewable energy technologies, favourable policy-making in a number of countries and the growing realisation that perpetuating the use of fossil fuels will be too expensive. Nevertheless, further acceleration is needed – in speed, scale, scope, and for eliminating regional disparities. The session discusses the current state of the global energy transition and highlights its recent success stories and remaining challenges around the globe. On this basis, participants debate how we can achieve the doubling-down/tripling-up targets set in Dubai through concrete actions. The focus of the discussion is on enabling policies that need an international or multilateral approach, on the role and recommendations of private actors, and on finance, whether from international financial institutions or from bilateral lenders, that has to be leveraged in larger quantity to reach the common goals. Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Lessons From the Energy Transition in Latin America & the Carribean moderated by Melinda Crane. South America is pivotal in steering the worldwide shift towards ecological sustainability, even as the impact of environmental alterations intensifies within the region. This region commands a rich tapestry of natural and developed resources and therefore holds the potential to significantly bolster global energy security and advance the cause of sustainable energy practices, provided that the region enacts robust policy frameworks. Furthermore, these resources could not only fuel the region’s own energy transformation but also serve as an economic catalyst, reversing a protracted period of modest economic expansion. Latin America and the Caribbean stand out with an energy matrix among the most pristine on the globe, setting a promising stage for future endeavors in clean energy sectors. Renewable energy sources, predominantly hydropower, are responsible for 60 percent of the region's electrical generation — double the worldwide average. This region also boasts some of the planet's most exceptional wind and solar potentials, particularly in nations like Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. Bioenergy utilisation is a common thread throughout these nations, strengthening their position as significant biofuel exporters. 20 Mar 2024
Berlin Energy Transi...
Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on Making Power Grids Fit for Renewables moderated by Jennifer Porto. Electric cars and home storage systems can act as both producers and consumers and thus relieve the load on the grid. In the EU, around 40 percent of grids are 40 years old or older. At that time, however, grids were designed as one-way streets from the large electricity producers to the consumers. At the time, no one thought about decentralised renewable energies or wind and solar parks on land or at sea. But that is now set to change. In order to implement the European Green Deal, the EU Commission presented an action plan at the end of 2023 to make the European electricity grids fit for the future. The Commission expects electricity consumption to increase by 60 percent by 2030. In addition, grids are to become more flexible, decentralised and digital and cross-border electricity trading is to double. The cost: almost 600 billion euros. In the meantime, the grid should also become smarter and adapt demand to fluctuating supply. The roll-out of smart meters provides consumers with the necessary incentives. The enormous growth in renewable energies poses a major challenge for the local electricity grids, particularly in Africa. According to IRENA, generation capacities are set to increase almost tenfold to 530 gigawatts by 2040. However, many people, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, are still not connected to the public power grid. Renewable energies, and photovoltaics in particular, nevertheless enable these people to cover their energy needs, often as part of stand-alone grids. Consideration is currently being given to how these off-grids can be integrated into the public grid and at the same time enable cross-border electricity trading, particularly of renewable electricity. Panel Discussion @BETD.24 on How to Make Industry Policy Green and Sustainable? moderated by Dr. Melinda Crane. Different regions of the world have recognised that domestic production of renewable energy equipment can be a key contributor to greater resilience. The EU plans to increase production capacity for eight selected key technologies to the point where they could meet at least 40 percent of European demand on average by 2030. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act seeks to boost U.S.-based manufacturing of clean energy infrastructure and equipment. The bill includes at least $15 billion in clean manufacturing tax credits to increase domestic manufacturing capacity for solar panels, wind turbines, and lithium batteries. Berlin Energy Transi...
Fireside Chat @BETD.24 on A Decade for the Energy Transition - 10 Years BETD moderated by Jennifer Porto. A lot has happened since the first BETD ten years ago. Notably, renewable energy has experienced a remarkable upswing, with global expansion accelerating each year. Last year, renewable energy sources accounted for over 80 percent of all new electricity generation capacity, while the energy crisis triggered by the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine highlighted the issue of supply security. Simultaneously, the costs of solar power and wind energy as well as storage solutions continue to fall, making them the most economically attractive energy sources in many regions today. With ever better and cheaper batteries, wind and solar power can be stored for longer, thus further increasing their share. All the while, we see new financing instruments on the market, advancements in energy savings and phasing-out fossil, and reforms to energy markets and prices. Despite these successes, CO2 emissions are not being reduced fast enough and continue to rise in some regions. The next few years are therefore crucial. Because if we do not act immediately, by 2030 we will be emitting twice as much GHGs globally as are permitted to achieve 1.5 degrees. In this Fireside Chat the last 10 years of the BETD and the topics that have been explored in the panel discussion A decade for the Energy Transition will be revisited. #betd24 Deep Dive: Decarbonising Supply Chains
19 Mar 2024
Berlin Energy Transi...
Deep Dive session @BETD.24 on Decarbonising Supply Chains moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi. In order to effectively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, companies need climate neutral supply chains – but getting there is highly complex. Companies can decarbonise their Scope 1 and 2 emissions relatively easily by avoiding their direct CO2 emissions and sourcing their energy purchases from renewable sources. However, most of the greenhouse gases associated with companies‘ products and services are Scope 3 emissions, which are generated upstream or downstream in their supply chains. For many companies, these emissions account for up to 80 percent of their carbon footprint. Accounting for these emissions is a major challenge which also makes it difficult to identify emissions hotspots within supply chains that need to be addressed. In addition, 80 to 90 percent of global trade is handled via shipping routes, which are currently still difficult to decarbonise. Nevertheless, great efforts are also being made to reduce emissions in this area. At the same time, sustainable access to critical raw materials is particularly important for the energy transition. Critical materials like neodymium, dysprosium, lithium but also cobalt, nickel and copper are the resources needed to produce numerous key technologies for the energy transition, including wind turbines, solar panels, batteries for EVs and electrolysers. EU Energy
All energy labelled products on the European market are registered in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). Single consumers can use this repository to search, sort and rank models, before looking for their prices in different stores. Bulk purchasers, such as public procurers or public authorities, can have an overview of the number of models on the Market in the highest efficiency classes to take decisions on purchase or incentive requirements. Over the next few years, EPREL will provide additional information such as spare parts cost, repair manuals or very detailed parameters relevant in model selection. Do you have questions about heat pumps? Leave your questions in the comments! Today, many of the ways we heat buildings around the world – such as homes, offices, schools and factories – still rely largely on fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. In this context, heat pumps, which can efficiently provide heating to buildings and industry, are the key technology to make heating more secure and sustainable. Heat pumps have the potential to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by at least 500 million tonnes in 2030. Though their name may not suggest it, they’re also capable of providing effective cooling throughout the year. In this video, Dan Wetzel, Yannick Monschauer, Chiara Delmastro and Rafael Martinez Gordon of the IEA explore how heat pumps work, why they’re able to be so much more efficient than traditional heating sources and why that leads to benefits for our climate and air quality. You can read our special report: “The Future of Heat Pumps” on the IEA website: https://www.iea.org/reports/the-future-of-heat-pumps #energy #energytransitions #heatpump #heating #cooling #renovation #buildings #airconditioning #climatechange #HVAC
