Health and Environme...
In this special webinar organised by the ATHLETE research project in collaboration with the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), Dr. Kelly Ferguson (NIEHS) presents her work on prenatal exposure to nonpersistent chemical mixtures and fetal growth. Pregnant women are ubiquitously exposed to a plethora of nonpersistent chemicals found in commonly used consumer products and via their diet, such as phthalates, bisphenols and organophosphate pesticides. Scientific research shows that all these chemicals are able to cross the placental and blood–brain barriers and have the potential to cause permanent developmental changes to the fetus, and are thus a growing public health concern. What’s more, because these chemicals are nonpersistent, their contribution to adverse health effects may be preventable via interventions in a relatively short period of time. During the webinar, Dr. Ferguson discusses recent research findings into how prenatal exposure to a mixture of phthalates, bisphenols and organophosphate pesticides can influence fetal growth in early pregnancy and later affect birth weight. Joint exposure to nonpersistent chemicals may adversely impact fetal growth, and because these exposures are widespread, this impact could be substantial. ATHLETE (Advancing Tools for Human Early Lifecourse Exposome Research and Translation) is a European-funded project that aims to better understand and prevent health effects of numerous environmental hazards and their mixtures, starting from the earliest stages of life. This is the first of the “Monthly Forest Restoration Talks” hosted by the SUPERB project in partnership with IUFRO‘s Task Force ‘Transforming Forest Landscapes for Future Climates and Human Well-Being’. Targeting researchers, practitioners, NGOs, policy makers and other interested stakeholders, the webinar series investigates forest restoration questions from diverse scientific perspectives, with alternating focus on the global and European levels. This includes exploring practical forest restoration approaches, experiences and challenges worldwide. The first webinar took place in November 2022 featuring forest restoration specialist John Stanturf as a speaker, who discussed the topic “If nature is the solution, what is the problem? A perspective from forest landscape restoration”. Webinars take place every second Wednesday of the month at the same time. Our scientific committees have had their last meetings of the year and in this episode we cover the outcomes of the Risk Assessment and Socio-Economic Analysis committees. Tim, the Chair of the Risk Assessment Committee and Maria who chairs the Socio-Economic Analysis Committee join us. We talk about the restriction of lead ammunition for hunting and outdoor sports shooting and lead used in fishing tackle. Here, the Socio-Economic Analysis Committee adopted its opinion on the costs and benefits and the Risk Assessment Committee carried out a further analysis of data from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on the risks from ingesting lead through game meat. Also on the agenda were the restriction of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in clay targets for shooting and an opinion on occupational exposure limits for cobalt and inorganic cobalt compounds. Tim also talks us through setting a derived no-effect level for DOTE to protect workers, a chemical which is on the REACH Authorisation List of substances of very high concern. What the committees do The two committees prepare scientific opinions that are used by the European Commission and EU member states when deciding how chemical risks need to be controlled. They are made up of scientists from EU Member States and have observers from EU organisations that represent different sectors and interests. The EU will no longer allow products that are linked to the destruction of forests onto the EU market. EU decision-makers concluded negotiations for an EU deforestation law, reaching a historic agreement. This regulation is the first in the world to tackle global deforestation and will significantly reduce the EU’s footprint on nature. This outcome is a significant win of the #Together4Forests campaign, which has brought together more than 210 NGOs to fight for a strong EU law against deforestation over the last two years.

Seasonal Irish Food for December

December is traditionally the month we mostly eat beige food but, with so much locally grown seasonal food, do yourself a favour and get eating Irish fruit and veg too! Ireland’s seasonal food in December includes cabbage, pak choi, rocket, mushrooms, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, onions, leeks and kale. When it comes to food, buying local can reduce the amount of energy used to package and transport food. It also keeps money in the local economy (especially if you support smaller businesses) and shortens the supply chain which greatly cuts down on food wastage. This December do your tastebuds (and local businesses) a favour and keep it seasonal! A device to keep turtles out of shrimp fishing nets
30 Nov 2022
The WWFEU European P...
Bycatch (where an animal is caught in a fishing net by accident) is the main threat to sea turtles globally. Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) allow at least 97% of turtles caught in a fishing net to escape, while keeping the shrimp. For over 30 years, the United States of America has required the use of this kind of tool on all shrimp fisheries whose products enter the US market. The device has been mandatory in fisheries in French Guiana since 2010. But there is no such requirement in the European Union. As the world's largest seafood market and with the largest marine territory on Earth, WWF is calling for the EU to adopt an effective law to require the use of TEDs on shrimp fisheries whose products are sold in the EU.

At COP 27, countries come together to take action towards achieving the world’s collective climate goals as agreed under the Paris Agreement and the Convention. Building on the outcomes and momentum of COP 26 in Glasgow last year, nations are expected to demonstrate at COP 27 that they are in a new era of implementation by turning their commitments under The Paris Agreement into action. The conference will take place from 6-18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Heads of State and Government will attend the Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit on 7 and 8 November. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (197 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. #COP27 #UNClimateChange

Climate misinformation is rampant across social media. Why Do We Need to Stop Exporting Our Trash?

Surfrider Foundation
The United States is one of the largest contributors to plastic pollution, shipping our plastic trash to developing countries to be “recycled.” However, plastic is actually cheaper to manufacture than to recycle, and most of the plastic that is sent off shore ends up in landfills, is incinerated and contributes to climate change, or even winds up in the ocean. That’s why Surfrider works tirelessly to introduce legislation that aims to prevent the export of plastic waste to developing countries, and close waste export loopholes by banning waste exports to countries that reexport that trash to other developing countries. We have effective and impactful solutions to plastic pollution—and with your support, we can stop the flood of plastics into our environment. Learn more: https://hubs.la/Q01rGkxd0
