This is the biggest national health crisis you've never heard of... The Pacific coastline along the U.S./Mexico border is steeped in rich multi-cultural identities, contains immense biodiversity, and contributes high economic value to both countries. Yet, this region is plagued by severe pollution that threatens public health, limits coastal access, harms ecosystems and wildlife, and jeopardizes local economies. Every day, millions of gallons of untreated sewage, toxic chemicals, and trash flow through the Tijuana River Watershed at the U.S./Mexico border. Our San Diego Surfrider Chapter has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years, and needs your support to bring this issue to the forefront of national attention. The WWFEU European P...
On 23 March 2024, millions of people around the world will celebrate Earth Hour, the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. This year, we are going beyond the symbolic gesture of turning off lights. We are on a mission to turn a single Earth Hour into millions of hours filled with action and awareness, all aimed at protecting our planet. WWF EU is using Earth Hour to highlight the importance of our European nature and shine a spotlight on what’s at stake in the upcoming EU elections. European communities have been hit hard by the consequences of extreme weather, like the wildfires that wreaked havoc last summer. In addition to the climate crisis, various environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss and EU’s fossil fuel reliance are negatively impacting our everyday lives. The outcome of the 2024 European elections will determine the future of many citizens and have an enormous impact on the environment and climate. European policy-makers have the opportunity to act for the benefit of our planet and protect us! Ahead of 9 June, when millions of citizens will cast their votes, WWF EU’s Director, Ester Asin, has used this opportunity to remind European policy-makers of the commitments they should make to protect our natural world. #BiggestHourForEarth #EarthHour #MyHourForEarth

UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (197 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development. # # #UNClimateChange

Extreme weather events such as storms, landslides, river floods and coastal phenomena have threatened and damaged many different regions across Ireland. These events, while rare and often short-lived, can have a devastating impact on critical infrastructure systems. As a result of climate change, these events are becoming more frequent and more intense, affecting not only physical infrastructure but also the environment and society as a whole. Using risk-based approaches in assessing the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change is a well-established method of identifying the most vulnerable infrastructure, assessing the risks posed to that infrastructure and developing strategies to minimise those risks.

Climate Bonds Initiative
India's G20 Presidency positioned sustainable finance as a key pillar of action and prioritised the mobilising of capital flows at scale and speed for climate and sustainability. COP28 echoed this agenda. As India progresses towards its 2070 net-zero targets, its success hinges on how well it can mobilise capital from international and domestic sources. Climate Bonds Initiative and MUFG, with their long standing commitment to climate investments, are coming together to engage stakeholders across Asia and align their sustainability and decarbonisation goals with the region's broader energy transition and developmental agendas. Join us in an exclusive dialogue in Mumbai, on 23 February. Hosted as part of the MUFG NOW (Net Zero World) and CLIMATE BONDS CONNECT series of thought leadership events, the session will gather business leaders, investors, policy-makers and industry experts. The dialogue will focus on the latest industry trends, regulatory shifts and market expectations to unleash new sustainable investment opportunities.

Droughts are pervasive and hazardous events that impact multiple domains, including agriculture, water resource management, ecological management, infrastructure, waterway navigation and forestry. A drought in Ireland in 2018, had severe socio-economic and environmental impacts across sectors: agriculture suffered from reduced grass growth, fodder shortages and decreased crop yields, peatlands faced increased wildfire risk and ecological degradation and water management was challenging amid supply issues. In addition, canals, waterways, and rivers experienced weed growth, navigation problems, fishing restrictions and reduced fish health and forestry saw increased tree deaths, especially in peatland plantations. The CROSSDRO project collated a network of river flow gauges across Europe, covering the period 1962–2017, for the analysis of hydrological drought.

The investment challenge is fundamental to mobilizing financial resources for the transformation toward climate neutrality. Every investment decision today locks us into a specific future - we must be careful about directing investment flows meaningfully. Maximizing green investments and providing predictability for economic actors need coordination at EU level and policies effectively promoting the transformation towards climate neutrality. Key policies should consider, among others, a long-term climate investment plan, securing adequate public funding and making sure the banking sector is implementing the existing regulations properly. What policies do we need to promote investment and finance in support of the EU’s climate ambition? In this 4th episode, together with investment and finance experts Julie Evain (I4CE) and Thomas Pellerin-Carlin (I4CE), we uncover the essential role of investment in climate policy by examining the EU’s role in mobilizing green investments for a resilient climate-neutral economy. We discuss how EU policies can provide predictability to economic actors and build a long-term vision towards climate neutrality. We also explore the role of the banking sector and the use of banks’ transition plans to make sure banks consider climate related risks and direct investments properly. Muncke, J. et al. (2023) “A vision for safer food contact materials: Public health concerns as drivers for improved testing.” Environment International. DOI: 10.1016/j.envint.2023.108161 Food contact materials (FCMs) and food contact articles are ubiquitous in today’s globalized food system. Chemicals migrate from FCMs into foodstuffs, so called food contact chemicals (FCCs), but current regulatory requirements do not sufficiently protect public health from hazardous FCCs because only individual substances used to make FCMs are tested and mostly only for genotoxicity while endocrine disruption and other hazard properties are disregarded. Indeed, FCMs are a known source of a wide range of hazardous chemicals, and they likely contribute to highly prevalent non-communicable diseases. FCMs can also include non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), which often are unknown and therefore not subject to risk assessment. To address these important shortcomings, we outline how the safety of FCMs may be improved by (1) testing the overall migrate, including (unknown) NIAS, of finished food contact articles, and (2) expanding toxicological testing beyond genotoxicity to multiple endpoints associated with non-communicable diseases relevant to human health. To identify mechanistic endpoints for testing, we group chronic health outcomes associated with chemical exposure into Six Clusters of Disease (SCOD) and we propose that finished food contact articles should be tested for their impacts on these SCOD. Research should focus on developing robust, relevant, and sensitive in-vitro assays based on mechanistic information linked to the SCOD, e.g., through Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) or Key Characteristics of Toxicants. Implementing this vision will improve prevention of chronic diseases that are associated with hazardous chemical exposures, including from FCMs.

Together, they got to the bottom of the problem of plastic pollution, exploring EU policy and looked into the current negotiations around the world’s first-ever legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The webinar is part of a new webinar series for young people in Europe that Ecologic Institute kick-started in 2022.
