Ask the experts: Young leaders showcase gender perspectives in the HIV response
27 Mar 2024
IAS – the Internat...
Adolescent girls and young women bear a disproportionate burden in the HIV response. In 2022, adolescent girls and young women constituted 77% of new HIV acquisitions in central, eastern, southern and western Africa with HIV acquisition three times higher than in boys and young men of the same age (UNAIDS, 2022). Data points to a clear shortage of gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and integrated HIV and reproductive health services designed for and by adolescent girls and young women. Young people currently account for 1.8 billion people globally, the largest generation of young people ever, 90% of whom live in low- and middle-income countries (UNAIDS, 2021). Yet the catalytic potential of young people, especially young women, in finding innovative solutions towards better health outcomes is critically underutilized. To unleash this potential, adolescent girls and young women must be engaged as beneficiaries, partners and leaders in initiatives that concern their health (UNAIDS, 2018) and be equipped with the necessary skills and leadership opportunities to execute bold and innovative ideas that are fine-tuned to their unique needs. For International Women’s Day, the IAS Youth Hub brought together four inspiring young women active in the HIV response for a virtual ask the experts style session. They provided participants with knowledge on the intersections of gender and the HIV response, guidance on how to overcome gender specific challenges and inspired other young people to be part of the movement. Speakers: • Alícia Krüger, Ministry of Health, Brazil • Keren Dunaway, ICW Global, Argentina • Kiho Tanaka, The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, Australia • Marie Okwoli, Global Women's Health, Rights and Empowerment Initiative, Nigeria Moderator: Daria Besting, International AIDS Society

27 Mar 2024
IAS – the Internat...
The introduction of long-acting products holds the potential to transform the HIV prevention and treatment landscape, offering dosing schedules that span months instead of days. However, they could face various implementation challenges similar to those encountered by oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including issues related to cost, delivery, uptake and persistent use, particularly in resource-constrained settings and among key populations. The guest editors and authors of the JIAS supplement https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/17582652/2023/26/S2 published in July 2023 offer a comprehensive overview of the ongoing research on long-acting regimens access, delivery and choice. This symposium features community perspectives, explores future directions in the field, and concludes with a panel discussion.

Awareness raising and behaviour change have been at the centre of initiatives aimed at addressing antimicrobial resistance, a major European and global public health problem. Each year in November, activities promoting prudent use of antibiotics amongst different target audiences take place across the world, focusing on communicating and engaging with groups such as healthcare workers, veterinarians, farmers, academics, policy makers and the general public. Recent attention has focused on the issues around communicating about antimicrobial resistance. From public health communicators to journalists, sharing information, raising awareness and overall helping different target audiences understand the topic is a major challenge. On March 26, we have met online to talk about how to communicate #AMR. This is the recording of the event.

Redefining Excellence: The CoARA Agreement as an Opportunity for the Citizen Science Community
26 Mar 2024
ECSA - European Citi...
In this ECS high-level policy event, we explored the role of citizen science in reforming research assessment and redefining scientific excellence. Together with experts and decision-makers from science and policy we discussed the CoARA Agreement - a unique opportunity to advance the integration of citizen science into mainstream academic funding and reputation systems - and reflected on its wider implications for both the field of citizen science and academia as a whole. Panelists: - Eva Mendéz (CoARA Steering Board, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) - Georgios Papanagnou (European Commission, DG Research and Innovation) - Claire Salinas/James Morris (Science Europe) - Diana Bowler (UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology) - Facilitated by Alan Irwin (Copenhagen Business School, Aarhus University) The CoARA agreement is vital for reforming research assessment in Europe as it fosters greater collaboration and coordination among research institutions across the continent. Through its advocacy for open science principles and societal engagement, CoARA strives to boost the visibility and recognition of research outputs beyond traditional metrics. Additionally, CoARA facilitates the implementation of transparent and accountable research practices, enhancing the credibility and integrity of European scientific endeavors. This event was part of the European Citizen Science (ECS) project, which is funded by the EU under Horizon Europe and runs from August 2022 to July 2026. ECS aims to link science to society and society to science by increasing the capacity of European society to engage the public in scientific research through an approach called Citizen Science. The project’s activities include networking events, a platform with information and resources, capacity-building and training, technical support and policy engagement activities. ECS is a project funded by the EU.

medicine Juvenile Onset Systemic Sclerosis: Insights on an Orphan Disease
Juvenile Onset Systemic Sclerosis: Insights on an Orphan Disease
22 Mar 2024
ERN ReCONNET
Short description The primary goal of this webinar is to offer a comprehensive overview of Juvenile Systemic Sclerosis (jSSc), which encompasses various aspects, including distinctions between juvenile and adult-onset diseases in terms of clinical presentation, treatment approaches, and disease outcomes. JSSc is considered an orphan disease, with an estimated prevalence of only 3 cases per 1,000,000 children. In 2007, the International Inceptions Cohort for jSSc was established. This international, multicenter cohort is instrumental in promoting collaborative efforts for both research and patient and thus enhancing our understanding of this rare condition. Currently, the registry is actively enrolling 245 patients. During the webinar, recent insights derived from the registry will be presented. Additionally, recommendations for the management of jSSc patients and the main differences between adult and juvenile onset of SSc will be briefly discussed. The overarching purpose of this webinar is to raise awareness, disseminate critical knowledge, and cultivate a collaborative environment where healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers can engage in discussions about this challenging condition. Furthermore, this webinar is designed to heighten awareness of this rare condition among adult rheumatologists. Program of the webinar: - “Insights from the International Inceptions Cohort for Juvenile Systemic Sclerosis and SHARE Recommendations (Ivan Földvari, 20 minutes) - Comparing Adult and Juvenile Forms: Lessons from the Literature (Edoardo Marrani, 10 minutes) - Discussion Speakers Dr. Ivan Földvari is a distinguished specialist in paediatric rheumatology, with a particular focus on juvenile onset systemic sclerosis (jSSc). He works at the Hamburger Zentrum Für Kinder- Und Jugendrheumatologie, Hamburg, Germany. His contributions to the field include serving as the Chair of the Scleroderma working group within the Pediatric Rheumatology European Society till 2023. He has played an active role in the SHARE initiative dedicated to jSSc and has made valuable contributions to the development of the EULAR/EUSTAR Treatment Guidelines for SSc. He is the principal investigator of the International Inceptions cohort for jSSc. Dr. Edoardo Marrani is a Pediatric Rheumatology Unit, AOU Meyer IRCCS, Firenze, Italy. He is an expert working in an ERN ReCONNET Full Member center; he is a member of the ERN ReCONNET Task Force on Transitional Care recently established. Did the ability to feed babies porridge help to fuel the population explosion seen in the Neolithic period? Did people take to the seas far earlier than previously thought to chase whales and seals? What is the difference between a flourishing desert frontier fort and one that dwindles into dust? We take a look at three times when food was a catalyst for change. Bettina Schulz Paulsson, an associate professor of Archaeology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, specialises in research related to the Stone Age. Her interests encompass seafaring, megaliths, prehistoric whaling and scientific dating and methods.  Associate professor of Egyptology at the Polytechnic of Milan, Corinna Rossi, focuses her research on the relationship between architecture and mathematics in ancient Egypt. Rossi has been exploring the antiquities of Egypt’s Western Desert for over 20 years. Sofija Stefanović is professor of Physical Anthropology and Bioarchaeology in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. She is interested in the prehistoric patterns of fertility and the influence of the duration of breastfeeding on children’s health in the Neolithic period. European Geosciences...
Tools using artificial intelligence (AI) have increasingly been applied in scientific publishing. AI tools can benefit authors by improving the language of scientific material including peer-reviewed publications. Despite assisting with the production of scientific material, the meteoric rise in AI tools have prompted concerns on whether their use is appropriate and ethical. This webinar introduced how AI tools are currently applied in scientific publishing, highlighted the key questions shadowing their use, and explored what this means for EGU journals and beyond. The webinar lasted one hour and finished with an audience Q&A. Speaker: Dr Sam Illingworth is an Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK. He is an award-winning researcher in science communication and interdisciplinary studies. Sam is also the Chief Executive Editor of the Geoscience Communication journal and the founder of Consilience, the world’s first science & poetry peer-reviewed journal. Despite fewer new HIV acquisitions globally, people who use drugs are still heavily impacted by HIV, viral hepatitis C and other health harms associated with unsafe drug use, IAS President Sharon Lewin reported at the start of the 67th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna today. Yet there is a way forward: heeding evidence that firmly supports harm reduction, putting people first and keeping human rights at the centre of our actions.  Lewin’s statement, read at the CND by Nora Volkow, the Director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse, drew on the findings of a consultation among scientists and community leaders that reviewed evidence on how the situation could be changed. The results from the consultation are clear: we must put people first as we strive for a world in which HIV no longer presents a threat to public health and individual well-being. Watch a recording of the statement read by Sharon Lewin now. You can also view the full statement https://www.iasociety.org/news/reducing-harms-associated-drug-use/ and find out more about harm reduction and HIV https://www.iasociety.org/harm-reduction/.

A multiscale map of inflammatory stress

Chronic stress and inflammation can cause serious illnesses. Could their impacts extend far further, to communities, societies, and even the health of our planet? Vodovotz et al propose a radical hypothesis: that inflammation connects stressors affecting individuals to impaired decision-making at scale, with potentially far-reaching consequences. Their lead article highlights the use of mathematical models to test these links—and the critical need for multilayered, multiscale interventions to reduce inflammatory stress and build resilience in individuals and societies. Read the full article in Frontiers in Science: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/science/articles/10.3389/fsci.2023.1239462/full Citation: Vodovotz Y, Arciero J, Verschure PFMJ and Katz DL. ECSA - European Citi...
Citizen science has a problem with engaging diverse participants, with a growing number of studies showing those most marginalised in society, who could benefit most from citizen science activities, are the least likely to participate. The full implications of this lack of diversity for what citizen science can achieve remains unexplored. In this webinar, supported by the ECSA and Living Knowledge Equity, Inclusion and Empowerment working group, Rachel Pateman shared her work from a recent Citizen Science: Theory and Practice article, 'Citizen Science: Pathways to Impact and why Participant Diversity Matters': https://theoryandpractice.citizenscienceassociation.org/articles/10.5334/cstp.569 Together with Sarah West, they created a comprehensive list of 70 proposed benefits, outcomes, and impacts of citizen science. They used this list to construct 9 pathways to impact and explored how a lack of diversity in citizen science participants can cascade through these pathways, affecting the overall ability of citizen science to achieve its myriad potential impacts and further entrenching disparities in society. This talk shared insights from this work and included an active discussion on the authors' call for 'greater imagination in exploring, testing, and sharing ways in which barriers to participation can be understood and overcome to open citizen science up to all and to achieve its potential.'

science How German Researchers Use Grass to Create This Traditional Soil Amender
How German Researchers Use Grass to Create This Traditional Soil Amender
5 Mar 2024
ESCI - European Scie...
Did you know that nature conversation and agriculture can go hand in hand? For example, to maintain the current state of protected open floodplain meadows in a national park, mowing is necessary. This produces grass. But the grass is not suitable for feeding animals or even for biogas plants, because the mowing takes place so late in the year, due to bird protection, that the grass has become very woody. The result is a large amount of unwanted grass that even the farmers who help cut it have no real use for. Sounds like a dilemma, but there is a solution. In this film you will learn about a collaboration between the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) in Potsdam and the National Park Association of the Lower Oder Valley in Brandenburg. They tackled the problem of unwanted grass in their area and developed an idea to turn it into a useful product, called biochar, with many applications. Biochar made from wood has been around for some time, and other organic materials have been experimented with as an input, so why not grass? Biochar is a soil amendment that improves water and nutrient retention and changes the microbial composition of the soil. In addition, the process of making biochar, called pyrolysis, generates large amounts of heat that could be used in a variety of ways.
