Technology is fast, and innovation has become the first driving force. Europe’s start-ups have been at the forefront of innovations that often means creating something new that no one else has done before. It’s not only a new product but also new business models, or new ways of working. Today, we are still not even close to reaching all the potential of technology. Therefore, the EU believes in ideas that aim to tackle the challenges we are facing, by supporting thousands of companies that create new jobs, drive change and shape our future. #eu #elections2024

European Aluminium's Key Priorities: It's Trade O'Clock

European Aluminium
In today's global economy, the concept of free trade is often championed as a driver of prosperity and progress. Yet, the reality is far more nuanced. While we embrace the principles of free trade, it is crucial to emphasise the qualifier - fair. Why? Because unfair trade practices pose a tangible threat to the aluminium industry. Over recent decades, China's non-market behaviour has increasingly distorted our playing field. Through subsidies and underpricing, Chinese products flood our markets, resulting in significant losses for European producers. This isn't just a localised issue; it reverberates globally, impacting trade dynamics far beyond our borders. What exactly should the EU do to protect strategic industries such as aluminium against unfair trade? Watch the video with our Trade Manager, Helin Öcal to find out. --------------------------------------- Learn more about us: Website: http://www.european-aluminium.eu Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/EU_Aluminium LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-aluminium-association

Home is a basic human need. Many of us take ours for granted. But rising rents and prices make it more and more difficult for many to afford one. For a long time, Anselm struggled to find a place to live in Dublin, until he became eligible for social housing. In July 2023, he finally moved into an affordable home run by Focus Ireland. It changed his life. The new apartment block was financed by the Irish Housing Finance Agency with the support of the European Investment Bank. Between 2016 and 2023, the European Investment Bank backed the agency with €650 million that resulted in 5,000 social and affordable housing units and 550 energy renovations. More investment in social infrastructure is one of the EIB’s top financing priorities in Europe. At an airbase in Denmark, the Danish Air Force has been training the next generation of Ukrainian fighter pilots to fly the F-16 Fighting Falcon. A coalition of NATO Allies, including Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway, has agreed to donate their F-16s to the Ukrainian Air Force. As part of the deal, Danish instructors at Skrydstrup Air Base are training Ukrainian pilots, technicians and ground crew how to fly and maintain the F-16. The first jets will enter service later this year. The Ukrainian pilots are full of praise for the F-16, noting its responsive controls and agile flight features. The F-16 is an advanced multirole fighter, which will replace Ukraine’s aging fleet of MiG-29 Fulcrums and Su-27 Flankers. Speedy, highly manoeuvrable and capable of carrying a wide range of ordnance, the F-16 will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s ability to continue defending its airspace and territory against Russia's war of aggression. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ SUBSCRIBE to this channel https://bit.ly/NATOsubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO News https://bit.ly/NATONewsSubscribe SUBSCRIBE to NATO History https://bit.ly/NATOHistorySubscribe Connect with NATO online: Visit the Official NATO Homepage: https://bit.ly/NATOhomepage Receive NATO updates via email: https://bit.ly/NATOemails Find NATO on FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/NATOfacebook Follow @NATO on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/NATOtwitter Follow NATO on Instagram: https://bit.ly/NATOinstagram Find NATO on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/NATOlinkedin Find NATO on Flickr: https://bit.ly/NATOflickr #NATO #OTAN #Ukraine

Reviving Canada’s Innovation Economy
29 Apr 2024
TechPolicy
The Canadian economy is in a rut, becoming increasingly less globally competitive than its peers. That much is clear in news headlines and dinner table conversations across the country. But there is far less clarity about the specific underlying details of what ails Canada’s economy, and as a result most assertions about how to address Canada’s economic woes focus too much on discrete issues such as science funding, lack of venture capital, and antitrust policy, while missing the bigger picture of what drives innovation, productivity, and competitiveness. To move the country forward, Canadian policymakers will need to take concerted action to fundamentally shift the way innovation and competitiveness policy is conceived and implemented in Canada. Please join the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) as it launches the Centre for Canadian Innovation and Competitiveness, an Ottawa-based ITIF affiliate focused on tackling these issues. This event will feature an expert panel discussion on a new report from the Centre examining the how and why of Canada’s performance on key measures of productivity, innovation, and competitiveness.

forests Documentary: Increase biodiversity to strengthen oak resilience
Documentary: Increase biodiversity to strengthen oak resilience
29 Apr 2024
European Forest Institute
Did you know that parasitoid insects can help control forest pests? Biodiversity plays a major role in the resilience of oak trees to the impacts of climate change. Luckily, there are important measures that foresters can implement to support the increase of biodiversity. This documentary produced by European Forest Institute features the “Oak Resilience” project, led by the state agency Wald und Holz NRW. The team around project leader Dr. Mathias Niesar and his colleague Dr. Wiebke Theisinger investigated parasitoids in selected study areas in North-Rhine Westphalia. They bred parasitoids in the laboratory and released them in areas with oaks infested with leave-eating caterpillars, to support the natural self-regulation of the forest ecosystem. The team around project leader Dr. Mathias Niesar and his colleague Dr. Wiebke Theisinger first collected parasitoids in the forest. In a second step, they tested in the laboratory if these parasitoids could be bred and potentially released in targeted areas. According to Dr. Niesar this could work “like a kind of vaccination” to support the natural self-regulation of the forest ecosystem. On a larger scale, the best way to increase biodiversity, and ultimately support oak resilience, is to implement measures such as flowering forest edges, wildflowers strips and meadows, structural diversity and light. Curious about how about how to strengthen oak resilience? Watch the video!

Advancing chemical safety: the impact of new hazard classes in the CLP regulation

EUchemicals
The Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation, also known as the CLP Regulation, requires companies to classify, label and package their hazardous chemicals appropriately before placing them on the EU market to protect health and the environment but also to ensure free movement of substances, mixtures and article. In this episode, the host Päivi Jokiniemi and the head of ECHA’s Hazard classification unit, Paul Ryan, talk about the amendment that introduced new hazard classes to the regulation – these entered into force in April 2023. They will also discuss the ongoing CLP revision that is one of the key deliverables of the European Commission’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainabilty. While it aims to update and optimise the regulation by ensuring that dangerous chemicals are properly identified, labelled and classified, it is also an important element in Europe’s move towards a toxic free environment.
