An Update from China with Denis Staunton
An Update from China with Denis Staunton
17 Apr 2024
IIEA
According to Denis Staunton, a troubled economy at home and rising trade tensions abroad has seen China drop its aggressive Wolf Warrior diplomacy in favour of dialogue with the United States and a charm offensive towards the European Union. But can Beijing rescue the domestic economy from deflationary pressures without provoking a trade war over the export of goods such as electric vehicles and other green energy products? And how will the latest tightening of control in Hong Kong and continuing tensions over Taiwan and in the South China Sea affect China’s relations with the rest of the world? Irish Times journalist Denis Staunton, the only correspondent for an Irish news organisation in China, joins the IIEA from Beijing with an update. About the Speaker: Denis Staunton has been China Correspondent for The Irish Times based in Beijing since October 2022. He was London Editor from 2015 to 2022 and has previously been the newspaper’s correspondent in Washington, Brussels and Berlin and served as Foreign Editor and Deputy Editor. Traces of past human settlements and dispersal patterns are only rare if one does not know where to find them. In this press conference, scientists reveal a wide variety of newly uncovered traces, ranging from huge erratic boulders in the young glacial area of Poland, limescale in ancient Roman aqueducts, to the evidence carried by tiny pollen grains and even tinier cosmogenic nuclides. With this data, we gain new insight into geoscience influenced myths of frost giants, the pathways of Greek nomads and human dispersal patterns across Eurasia, and how water resource management and adaptations to climate crises were a problem for ancient settlements too. Department of Health
On #HSPCDay2024, the Minister for Health acknowledges and thanks the 21,000 Health and Social Care Professionals working in our public health and social care service treating and helping patients everyday. @HSELive @WeHSCPs TRANSCRIPT: Hi there. I want to mark Health and Social Care Professional Day by acknowledging and thanking all of you - all of our Health and Social Care Professionals working right across our health and our social care services. This year's theme, Health and Social Care Professionals Working in Partnership” - it really resonates with me as we begin implementing the Health Regions and reforms to achieve what we all want: universal healthcare - a country where all patients can get the care they need, when they need it. Partnership and integration are going to be vital in achieving this goal. I am fully committed to building and supporting the development of the healthcare workforce. This includes supporting the retention and the skill development of Health and Social Care Professionals. We made good progress over the last year in particular. I appointed the Chief Health and Social Care Professional Officer in May of last year. Work is continuing to develop policy on the introduction of advanced practice roles. But what we're looking at first is allowing trained physiotherapists, appropriately trained physiotherapists, to refer their patients for X-rays or radiological procedures. I've met with a lot of health and social care professionals. I've met with them across many different areas of hospitals and community settings. I hear consistently that expanding your scope of practice, embracing leadership roles and driving innovation to support your work will make a real difference to your patients. Working together, we want to ensure that we reduce hospital waiting times, help patients avoid hospitals, streamline care for chronic illnesses and of course improve the patient experience. Increasingly, the supply of health and social care professional graduates is essential. We've made important progress in increasing the number of student training places across Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery and Health and Social Care Professionals. We're going to continue with expanding these college places. Finally, can I use this opportunity on Health and Social Care Professional Day to thank you all. Thank you for your knowledge, your commitment, your enthusiasm, your skill and the care and professionalism that you bring to treating and caring for your patients, which we all know you demonstrate every single day. Have a great day.

Vic Ballantyne's report video Too fat? The role of body condition in maternal livestock in areas with extreme seasonal variability, sponsored jointly by The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society and the Worshipful Company of Farmers. Vic's full report can be downloaded from: https://www.nuffieldscholar.org/sites/default/files/2024-04/Nuffield%20Report%20-%20Vic%20Ballantyne%20-%20Final%20for%20Publication%20-%20March%202024.pdf ***** Executive Summary It’s no secret that commercial UK sheep and beef farms are hampered by high external inputs and labour costs. Coupled with declining government financial support, increased cost of production and market unknowns, there has never been a better time to reassess our animals and systems. Winter in the UK is the most costly time of the year due to high feed requirements. This couldn’t be truer than in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. With our long, growthy summer days and longer, dark, wet winters, managing the extremes of our pasture growth curve is challenging. Having robust and resilient animals is key to meeting this challenge. For decades we have known that good Body Condition Score (BCS) is essential in cows and ewes at key times in the year. Simplified, BCS is the physical and/or visual scoring of fat and muscle across the lower back of an animal. Recommendations exist for how to condition score and what score is desired at key times in the reproduction cycle. Good BCS is directly linked with better animal health, increased fertility and reduced feed requirements. These three things alone are enough to merit more attention on the subject. Not all animals are created equal and some are able to both put on and hold condition more easily than others – traditionally known as ‘easy fleshing’ animals. Significant worldwide research into the genetic component of BCS puts the trait at around 25% heritability. In practical terms this means genetic gain can be made relatively easily through recording and selection. I visited commercial and pedigree cattle and sheep producers in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland and the UK. Those who had taken on board the message of actively selecting for body condition reported a number of productivity and animal welfare benefits. BCS can be manipulated by environmental nutrition and it is therefore a trait that is easily masked by preferential or excessive feeding. It was, almost universally, acknowledged by those I visited that the pedigree industry have not done enough to provide commercial farmers with bulls and rams fit for commercial environments. Though, equally, commercial farmers don’t do themselves any favours by supporting the status quo. It is essential that breeding stock are subjected to some nutritional and environmental pressure if we are to identify those with the genetic ability to put on and hold body condition. Those I visited reported that higher BCS became most valuable during tough periods – in either difficult winters or droughts. As our climate becomes more unpredictable, the ability of an animal to ride out the extremes will become more important. Though even in a normal season the genetic propensity to hold condition still presents plenty of opportunities, including increasing stocking rates. With this knowledge in mind and an eye on continuing research using new technology and information, it is apparent that there exists significant opportunity within the beef and sheep sectors to build herds and flocks fit for the future by prioritising body condition as part of the selection process. ***** Nuffield Farming Scholarships are awarded to approximately 20 members of the UK food, farming, horticulture and rural industries each year. These funds give Scholars the opportunity to travel the world studying their chosen topic and bring global best practices back to the UK by sharing their knowledge. This episode of EuropeChats is the second in our two-part discussion with former Belgian Prime Minister and first permanent President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy. In the first part, TEPSA Secretary-General Jim Cloos sat down with President Van Rompuy to discuss his experience and working practices in the EUCO; in this part, they discuss the main policy priorities he had to face during his tenure as President between 2009-2014. You can watch PART 1 here: https://youtu.be/mlbG5-Mp_8M President Van Rompuy has experienced different iterations of the European Council from different perspectives: he first joined the club as Belgian Prime Minister before the Lisbon Treaty entered into force and where Foreign Ministers where thus still taking part in the meetings. Then, when he became the Institution's first permanent President, he held the position in the iteration of the EUCO currently extant in the Treaties. All of this at a time where the EU's early 21st century so-called 'perma-crisis' was gathering momentum, with the fallout of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis continuing into the 2010s, and the early days of the Refugee Crisis coming to the fore towards the end of his tenure. This episode is a discussion with Herman Van Rompuy. President Van Rompuy was Prime Minister of Belgium from 2008-2009, President of the European Council 2009-2014, and is Honorary President of the European Policy Centre. _____________ EuropeChats is TEPSA’s talk show dedicated to answering your questions about the European Union. If you ever wondered what competences the EU has, what effects its policies have on your day-to-day life, and why the EU is so important, then this show will give you all the answers you need! Every episode we will be answering your questions about Europe and the EU. Jim Cloos is TEPSA’s Secretary-General, and has spent a lifetime in the heart of Brussels. As the former Deputy Director General for General and Institutional Policy at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, he was involved in European decision-making at every level. He had a key role in drafting the Maastricht Treaty during the Luxembourgish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 1991, and has an intricate expertise on EU Affairs and the internal functioning of the European institutions. UITP President Renée Amilcar took the stage to share how public transport is key to a sustainable future. “The right measures can put us on a path to a 2050 that we can all celebrate, a future where communities are connected by public transport.” The President of the UNGA, H.E. Dennis Francis convened the Assembly and dedicated 17 April to sustainable transport. He opened the meeting saying that “we gather here today at what we hope will be the threshold of a monumental shift in acceleration towards sustainable development. The crucial significance of the transport sector in our global economy cannot be overstated.” UITP was invited to contribute with solutions to improve the balance between economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable transport. The outcome of the High Level Meeting serves as a contribution to the implementation plan for the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport.

Learn more: https://www.iea.org/events/global-ev-outlook-2024 The Global EV Outlook is an annual publication that assesses recent developments in electric mobility around the world. It is developed with the support of members of the Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI). Combining analysis of historical data with projections, now extended to 2035, the report examines key areas of interest, such as the deployment of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, battery demand, investment trends, and policy developments, as well as what wider EV adoption means for electricity and oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The report includes analysis of lessons learned from leading markets, providing information for policy makers and stakeholders on policy frameworks and market systems that support electric vehicle uptake. This edition also features analysis of electric vehicle affordability, second-hand markets, lifecycle emissions of electric cars and their batteries, and grid impacts from charging electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Two online tools will be made available alongside the report: the Global EV Data Explorer and the Global EV Policy Explorer, which allow users to interactively explore EV statistics, projections and policy measures worldwide.

European Parliamenta...
In June 2024, around 400 million EU citizens go to the polls to elect the Members of the European Parliament's 10th legislature. As the only EU institution that represents EU citizens, elections to the European Parliament are a major democratic event, and the only one at EU level that resembles national democratic electoral consultation. European elections, however, differ from the national version, as they are part of a context of multi-tier government, sometimes perceived as 'second order elections'. The main difference is that the European elections are a rather fragmented exercise, since a great part of the electoral process, including the way in which the right to vote is exercised, remains subject to national rules. Violence against women active in politics in the EU: A serious obstacle to political participation
17 Apr 2024
European Parliamenta...
Women continue to be under-represented in EU countries at all levels of political decision-making as well as in political parties. The origins of this situation are complex, but one reason stands out: violence against women active in politics discourages many women from entering the political arena. Women politicians are exposed to two severe and intersecting forms of violence: political violence and gender-based violence. Violence against women in politics takes multiple forms, from physical attacks to psychological and symbolic abuse, including sexual and sexist comments, online hate speech and sexual harassment, etc. See the publication behind this podcast: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/en/document/EPRS_BRI(2024)759600 🎧Listen to our podcasts reporting on the latest EU policy developments, looking into the impact they will have on our lives and capturing their policy implications: iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/european-parliament-eprs-policy-podcasts/id1086996218?mt=2 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6gy0Q2GWrcpPsAE71iSiEn Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZXVyb3BhcmwuZXVyb3BhLmV1L3Jzcy9wb2RjYXN0L2VwcnMtcG9saWN5LXBvZGNhc3Qvb3IueG1s Deezer: https://www.deezer.com/us/show/2556622 TuneIn Radio: http://tunein.com/radio/EPRS-Plenary-Podcast-p762190/ Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/european-parliament-eprs-policy-podcasts #UseYourVote #EUelections2024

On 12 September 2023, the Commission adopted a proposal for a Head Office Taxation System which would allow SMEs operating cross-border through permanent establishments the option to interact with only one tax administration – that of its Head Office. Compliance with business taxation rules can be complex. If SMEs wish to operate cross-border, they become taxable in more than one Member State as soon as their activity abroad creates a permanent establishment, which requires compliance with different tax systems and rules. If agreed by Member States, the Commission's proposal will increase tax certainty and reduce compliance costs, which will help to foster investment and cross-border expansion in the EU.

EU tax and customs
Compliance with business taxation rules can be complex. If SMEs wish to operate cross-border, they become taxable in more than one Member State as soon as their activity abroad creates a permanent establishment, which requires compliance with different tax systems and rules. Compliance with those obligations comes with fixed costs, creating a barrier that can prevent SMEs from developing into other markets, investing back into their business or hiring new staff. This is especially the case for new companies and start-ups. Under the new Head Office Taxation (HOT) proposal, cross-border SMEs would be able to choose to interact with only one tax administration in one EU Member State – that of the Head Office – instead of having to comply with multiple tax systems. The Commission's proposal will increase tax certainty and reduce compliance costs, which will help to foster investment and cross-border expansion in the EU. The webinar is addressed to SME's. It will explain the proposal to the interested audience and will also address questions from the audience. A klímaváltozás elleni küzdelem egyre nagyobb lendületet vesz Magyarországon. Szeged városában működik Magyarország legnagyobb geotermikus energiarendszere az EU kohéziós politikájának támogatásának köszönhetően. A cél a gáz mintegy 50 százalékos csökkentése, ami növeli Magyarország energiafüggetlenségét. A szegedi modell más EU-tagállamokban is megismételhető, hogy segítse az EU klímacéljainak elérését. In Europe, geothermal energy represents only 2,8 % of renewable energy sources used. But in Tamási, in southwest Hungary, known for its thermal spa, thermal water is also used for district heating, significantly replacing the heating gas demand of the municipally managed public buildings. In addition to the gas savings, the system also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas carbon dioxide released into the air, contributing to the carbon neutrality targets prioritized by the EU. Unveiling Antarctica’s secrets: new research brings us one step closer to predicting the future of the icy continent In this press conference, we present ground-breaking research findings that shed light on environmental change in Antarctica. In one study from the highly-studied Brunt Ice Shelf, researchers are combining ice cores, seismic surveys and modelling techniques to unravel the mysteries of iceberg calving, providing valuable insights into the processes driving this phenomenon. A second study, part of the UK-US-led International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration used seismic surveys to visualise the bedrock beneath Thwaites Glacier. The results of this study will feed into models which will give us new insights into the future of this unstable glacier. These studies represent significant strides in our understanding of the changes taking place in Antarctica, and their potential implications for global sea level rise. An unique family of rare meteorite fragments has revealed the influence that Jupiter’s instability had on the evolution of our Solar System, particularly the asteroid belt between us, as late as 60-100 myr after its formation. Even as these fragments provide new understanding of Jupiter, NASA’s Juno Mission delivers brand new thermal data that indicates the presence of endogenic heat flow on Io, providing new information about the moon’s composition. Herman Van Rompuy: What is the Role of the EUROPEAN COUNCIL? | #EuropeChats Episode 23 - Part 1
16 Apr 2024
Trans European Polic...
This episode of EuropeChats is the first in a number of discussions both within and outside of the EuropeChats series that TEPSA and its Member Institutes are conducting to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the European Council. In this discussion, TEPSA Secretary-General Jim Cloos sits down with former Belgian Prime Minister and the first ever permanent President of the European Council: Herman Van Rompuy. This is the first of two parts of this discussion. You can watch PART 2 here: https://youtu.be/N1XL62buUsE President Van Rompuy has experienced different iterations of the European Council from different perspectives: he first joined the club as Belgian Prime Minister before the Lisbon Treaty entered into force and where Foreign Ministers where thus still taking part in the meetings. There is no-one better placed to answer any question about Europe that you might have. _____________ TEPSA Website: https://www.tepsa.eu/ TEPSA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tepsaeu/ TEPSA LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tepsabrussels/ TEPSA Twitter: https://twitter.com/tepsaeu TEPSA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tepsa.eu Music: Worakls, 22 September 2014, Salzburg, Hungry music This video is co-funded by the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme of the European Union Co-funded by the European Union. In all high-risk industries, knowledge is key for achieving sustainable and safe performance. With complex technologies and involvement from numerous players and organisations, railways are no exception. Therefore, it is crucial that adequate training is easily available for all involved parties in the railway sector. To enhance knowledge among its stakeholders, ERA is developing an ambitious safety training portfolio, revealed in January 2024. In addition, to facilitate stakeholder participation in local training and in their respective languages - and because the Agency cannot deliver all necessary training itself - ERA is piloting a qualification scheme for railway safety training courses related to the European Union framework of railway safety law, launched (and published on the ERA website) in September 2023. During the webinar, the ten successful candidates will have the opportunity to present and share their experience during the pilot for their safety training. The next steps of this promising initiative to increase safety critical knowledge and wider available training opportunities all over Europe will be presented and discussed. ESCI - European Scie...
In the summer 2022 Europe was hit by the worst #drought in 500 years. A warning level was in place for 47% of European countries and in many places, people saw their #soil completely dry up. Severe droughts, exacerbated by climate change, particularly affect southern regions like Spain, Portugal, and Greece. Scientists are exploring new methods like #wastewater recycling are being explored to combat water scarcity. In 2018 researchers in Tossa de Mar, Spain and elsewhere started a project called “NextGen” to produce high-quality water from municipal wastewater which meets both treated water and drinking water regulations. This recycled water is already being used for irrigation, reducing pressure on freshwater sources. Experts say it’s important we use circular economy principles to manage water. They advocate for efficient water recovery, energy, and nutrient recycling to mitigate pollution and reduce water usage. But regulatory challenges still exist, with some standards demanding treated wastewater quality akin to drinking water, posing financial and practical hurdles. Spain’s approach, with a more pragmatic, risk-based regulation, balances safety with feasibility in wastewater reuse. These initiatives signify a crucial step towards sustainable water management amidst escalating climate challenges. The NextGen project was completed in 2022. Assessing EU's chemicals legislation: more needs to be done to make chemicals safe and sustainable
16 Apr 2024
EUchemicals
Welcome to this episode of the Safer Chemicals Podcast, where we look into the EU indicator framework for chemicals, focused on improving chemical safety across Europe. The transition towards safer and more sustainable chemicals is progressing in some areas, while in others, it is just beginning. This is the finding of a first, joint Europe-wide assessment of the drivers and impact of chemical pollution by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The benchmarking found that more work is still needed to reduce the impact of harmful substances on human health and the environment.  We are joined by Leena Ylä-Mononen, the Executive Director of EEA and Sharon McGuinness, the Executive Director of ECHA. Together, they discuss the roles their agencies play in developing these indicators. This episode offers an in-depth look at how these agencies work together to support safer chemical management, highlighting the real-world impact of their work on environmental and public health. We'll explore the challenges faced during the project, the collaboration between various European institutions, and what future developments we might expect in the realm of chemical safety. Background According to the joint EEA-ECHA synthesis report on the EU indicator framework for chemicals, the overall use of the most harmful chemicals (in particular those that are carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic) is still growing but more slowly than the overall chemicals market growth. Pressure is increasing to avoid the use of so-called substances of concern and to implement the principles of the safe and sustainable by design framework.   There is a need to more effectively ensure that consumer products do not contain the most harmful substances, for example chemicals that are endocrine disrupting, that negatively affect the hormone system, or substances that are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic, which present a risk for years to come even after their use has ceased.  More data and information are needed to better understand human and environmental exposure to those most harmful chemicals and their impacts. Still, the indicators show clearly that the shift to safe and sustainable chemicals must continue and should even be accelerated.  Listen to our episode for a deep dive into what the main findings of this initial assessment were and check the online dashboard for more details. Europe's social market economy is all about balancing economic growth with social welfare. To create a thriving workforce for the future, the EU is taking initiatives such as: 🔹 investing in trainings to match worker skills with business needs; 🔹 regulating fair minimum wages and creating regulations for platform work are crucial; 🔹 promoting gender equality through initiatives like pay transparency and quotas for women on boards, and 🔹 committing to diversity and inclusion for a stronger workforce. #europeanunion #EUDelivers Watch on the Audiovisual Portal of the European Commission: Subscribe to our channel: https://bit.ly/2X56Ju6 Follow us on: -X: https://twitter.com/EU_Commission -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/europeancommission/ -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EuropeanCommission -LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-commission/ -Medium: https://medium.com/@EuropeanCommission Check our website: http://ec.europa.eu/

Professor Larry M. Bartels discusses his new book Democracy Erodes from the Top: Leaders, Citizens and the Challenge of Populism in Europe. Professor Bartels challenges the narrative of a populist “wave” in contemporary European public opinion. He argues that electoral support for right-wing populist parties has increased only modestly, driven by populist entrepreneurs, the failures of mainstream parties, and media hype. He argues that Europe’s democratic backsliding reflects the ambitions of political leaders rather than public opinion. Professor Bartels concludes that the bottom-up interpretation of Europe’s political crisis needs to be turned upside down. About the speaker: Larry M. Bartels is May Werthan Shayne Chair of Public Policy and Social Science and University Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Law at Vanderbilt University. His books include Democracy Erodes from the Top: Leaders, Citizens, and the Challenge of Populism in Europe; Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age (2nd ed); and Democracy for Realists: Why Elections Do Not Produce Responsive Government (with Christopher Achen). He is an elected member of the American National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. Recorded on the 15th of April 2024

AI for Good
The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) is set to profoundly impact society. In Power and Progress: Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity (2023), Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson studied how technological advancements, while promising in theory, often distribute benefits unevenly, primarily enriching a narrow elite while posing challenges to the broader workforce and societal well-being. In this webinar, Professor Daron Acemoglu presents a range of future scenarios of how AI might reshape the work landscape by 2030. These scenarios depend on decisions made by policymakers, business leaders, and society at large, as well as on the pace of AI's development. The aim is to inform policy recommendations, encourage proactive strategies within businesses, and increase public awareness regarding the use of AI so that the advancements in AI contribute to a more equitable and prosperous society for all.

RECAH Breakfast sessions – 2. Coöperation BioZon, The Netherlands (26 July 2023)

EU Energy
The 2nd Energy Community Breakfast Session highlighted the operations and successes of Biozon, an energy community in the Netherlands founded on the principle of cost-effective power, delivering energy that flows through your socket that won't hit you in your pocket. Founded in 2019, Biozon's initiative began with a power purchasing agreement at a fixed price of 0.055 cent per kWh with Agem Municipal Energy. The community uses a landfill gas installation as a source of power generation. The model entails procuring additional electricity from other energy communities within the Netherlands when required and resorting to the conventional market only as a last option. This approach aligns with Biozon's mission of promoting sustainable and affordable energy. Currently, the project involves 60 households, supplied through Agem, which holds the requisite permit. Notably, the landfill gas installation has been producing more energy than initially anticipated, marking a significant success for the project. Comunità Energitica Rinnovabile Rosetana APS, referred to more colloquially as Comunità Energetica Rinnovabile di Roseto Valfortore, is a rural EC in Apulia, Italy. The EC celebrated the inauguration of their first 6kW renewable energy installation on January 27th, 2023. The EC is actively pursuing other innovative activities in the near future, by maximising their income with the GSE incentive on shared energy using smart meters, exploring opportunities for storage, e-mobility and district heating. The EC’s “leasing model” is a unique way of reducing the initial financial burden on the community and offers a valuable lesson to other communities in their early stages, as well as the ECs’ ability to take advantage of the incentives available in Italy through self-consumption and shared energy. Currently, the community has 30 members and has a driving ambition to increase self-consumption to cover 100% of its citizens, reducing their financial costs for energy and eventually becoming autonomous from an energy perspective. Meet Hera, our very own asteroid detective. Together with two CubeSats – Milani the rock decoder and Juventas the radar visionary – Hera is off on an adventure to explore Didymos, a double asteroid system that is typical of the thousands that pose an impact risk to planet Earth. In September 2022 NASA’s DART spacecraft tested if it was possible to divert an asteroid by giving it a shove – and found out that it was! Important knowledge, should we wish to avoid going the same way as the dinosaurs. Astronomers can observe from afar how the smaller asteroid’s orbit has shifted since DART’s impact, but there is still a missing piece of the puzzle if we want to fully understand how ‘kinetic impacting’ works in practice. Suitable for kids and adults alike, this episode of ‘The Incredible Adventures of Hera’ explains why ESA’s asteroid detective and its CubeSat assistants need to get up close and personal to shine light on this cosmic mystery. The Disaster and Climate Risk Data Fellowship program believes that students, young climate researchers, and data scientists from vulnerable countries are best positioned to lead scientific-based climate risk efforts in their regions. This video showcases the work of the first cohort of Disaster and Climate Risk Data Fellows at the World Bank. This initiative was led by the Digital Earth team from the Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) at the World Bank, with financial support from a grant provided by the Swiss Re Foundation. The project commenced in September 2022 and concluded in December 2023, lasting a total of 15 months. The primary objective of the program was to identify and support a cohort of Risk Data Fellows in seven climate-vulnerable countries. Their mandate was to access, create, and communicate climate risk knowledge within their respective countries. They accomplished this by contributing to World Bank projects related to disaster investments or analytical work. Fellows were chosen based on their expertise in disaster and climate risk data, along with their commitment to supporting their countries and communities. They received training and hands-on support throughout the project and significantly contributed to enhancing climate risk analysis through their involvement in World Bank projects. In addition to supporting the selected fellows, the project aimed to develop the Risk Data Library, a project focused on establishing open data standards and tools to facilitate disaster and climate risk assessments, particularly in countries with limited data access. The fellows presented their work at the World Bank HQ in Washington DC and Columbia University in New York. But more importantly, they contributed significantly to improving disaster and climate risk knowledge for their communities. Risk Data Fellows featured in the video: - Zia Uddin Foisal: Socioeconomic and climate data for Bangladesh investments - Paolo Magnata: Enhancing coastal road safety in Mindanao Island, Philippines - Ankita Sood: Mitigating flood and drought risks in Indian cities - Bradley Riley: Integrated river management in three South African cities - Mohammad Fadli: Climate adaptation data for 80,000 villages in Indonesia - Hwaba Mambo: Integrating disaster risk data into the National Social Registry Fund in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - Isabelle Tingzon: Mapping buildings using drones and machine learning in the Caribbean The World Bank's Risk Data Fellows Project team included Pierre Chrzanowski (Disaster Risk Management Specialist), Andrea Garcia Tapia (Disaster Risk Consultant), Stuart Fraser (Senior Disaster Risk Consultant), Nuala Cowan (Senior Disaster Risk Consultant), and Mattia Amadio (Disaster Risk Analytics Consultant).
