ENERGY RESEARCH GOES MAINSTREAM

WHEN SCIENCE JOURNALISTS MEET ENERGY RESEARCHERS EU Sustainable Energy Week 2010 programme

Europe has produced some ground-breaking research on the energy front. But how is this research communicated? How can we improve the transfer of information and expertise? RELATE (Research Laboratories for Teaching journalists) is a pilot project designed to bridge relations between researchers in EU funded labs and young journalists, with a view to building long-term relationships. The goal is to give greater context to science journalism by showing how researchers work and why they do what they do. In turn, the project aims to raise public awareness about ongoing research and innovation coming out of Europe. In this special workshop, RELATE researchers, journalists and project coordinators will present what they have learned after their week in the labs. They will also give their views on how best to improve the transfer of information between researchers and journalists and in particular with energy researchers. The workshop will take place on the last day of the training week, in which 10 journalists were hosted by a research laboratory of the Marmara Research Center, as part of the RELATE project. It will enable participants to share their experiences with the general public. In addition, the workshop will be a chance for researchers and for the media attending to discuss how to set up new frameworks for cooperation, with the aim of better connecting relevant EU research to the mainstream and specialised media. RELATE is a project funded by the European Commission under FP7 of research and development programme with the Science in Society Programme.
