The private sector's role in development

Friends of Europe's Development Policy Forum (DPF) will ask how is the growing role of private actors in development cooperation being seen?

09.00 -9.30: Welcome and registration of participants9.30 -11.30: SESSION I NEW ACTORS, NEW APPROACHES, AND NEW FORMS OF COOPERATION IN DEVELOPMENTEurope’s development cooperation landscape is changing. Official development assistance (ODA) from donor countries to the developing world is increasingly being outpaced by private sector investment, money from philanthropy and remittances from emigrants working abroad. Who are today’s major private actors, and what are the chief characteristics of these new forms of development assistance? Do they act in the field in ways similar to the NGOs and international agencies that handle so much of ODA, or is their approach novel and different? What relationship do they typically have with institutional donors and host governments and what potential is there for synergies between the more traditional aid agencies and these new private actors?11.30 - 12.00: Coffee Break12.00-13.30: SESSION II MAKING DEVELOPMENT MORE EFFECTIVE: POLICY RESPONSES TO THE CHANGING LANDSCAPEDonors and development agencies are increasingly seeking to identify the forms of aid delivery and implementation that work best. With the High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness due to focus on these issues at the end of 2011, how is the growing role of private actors in development cooperation being seen? What more should policy-makers be doing to encourage partnerships between the new breed of private actors and the traditional ODA community? In what ways could public-private partners improve development effectiveness? And given the growing pressures of population growth, climate change and natural resource scarcities, is there a case for reviewing the global architecture of development cooperation to improve coordination between public and private development actors?  13.30 - 14.30: Networking lunchFor more informaton please visit our event website.
