The case for a cultural footprint

Researchers Elna Roig and Jordi Baltà present their report

Elna Roig and Jordi Baltà will present their report ‘Approaches to a cultural footprint: proposal for the concept and ways to measure it’. This will be followed by a response from Johan Häggman (European Commission) and François Alfonsi MEP and a discussion with representatives from civil society organisations, think-tanks and other research centres. The report discusses the concept of ‘cultural footprint’ and examines its political implications. The notion of a cultural footprint is inspired by the ‘ecological footprint’ used since the 1990s to measure the impact of human action on natural resources and on ecosystems’ capacity to regenerate. Importing the idea of a ‘footprint’ into a cultural context emphasises the importance of culture for sustainable human development. The development of a cultural footprint is a first step towards developing effective cultural policy impact assessments.Programme17.00 Registration17.15 Welcome and introduction by Mr Günther Dauwen, Secretary-General of the Centre Maurits Coppieters17.30 Presentation of the report by its authors Mrs Elna Roig, policy officer for cross-border cooperation at the foreign affairs department of the government of Catalonia and professor at the Pompeu Fabra University(Barcelona), and Mr Jordi Baltà, project coordinator at the Interarts Foundation (Barcelona) and researcher in the areas of cultural policy and international cultural cooperation.18.00 Comments by Mr Johan Häggman, co-ordinator of multilingualism and translation studies, European Commission and Mr François Alfonsi, MEP (Greens/European Free Alliance).18.30 Questions and Answers19.00 Drinks and finger foodEN and FR interpretation will be provided at this conference. Please RVSP by Thursday 1 December 2011 to info (at) cmc-foundation (dot) euThe report can be downloaded at CMC's website.
