Water security: Policies for better access

Friends of Europe's annual European Policy Summit as part of the Commission

14.00 - 14.30 Registration of participants14.30 - 16.00 SESSION ITACKLING AFRICA'S WATER SCARCITIESDemand for water is soaring around the world, yet already more than a billion people don’t have access to safe water. In northern, western and southern Africa, 14 countries are suffering from water stress, and water shortages aggravated by climate change are hitting food production in many regions. The lack of clean drinking water and sanitation is the cause of diarrhoea and cholera that kill 1.5m African children yearly. How should African governments address water scarcities? Are initiatives like the Global Water Partnership and the African Water Stability beginning to show results and what can the private sector do to boost infrastructural investment? Is a more efficient and diversified allocation of water in Africa, especially for agriculture, on the cards?Co-moderated by Giles Merritt, Secretary General of Friends of Europe, and Shada Islam, Head of Policy at Friends of Europe16.00 - 16.30 Break16.30 - 18.00 SESSION IIIMPROVING ASIA'S WATER GOVERNANCE  As Asia’s water resources come under increasing pressure, there is rising concern over the way competing territorial claims are making matters worse. India and Pakistan are entangled in a dispute over water resources and dam-building, and there is concern that border tensions and drought in Central Asia are combining to create serious water disputes. Relations among members of the Mekong River Commission are also tense, with China as an upstream state occupying a strong position over many downstream ones. What are governments in Asia doing in terms of water diplomacy, and also to increase the diversity of water supplies for agriculture and energy? Is the political will there to step up financial and technical assistance to deal with water-based problems? Are stakeholders promoting efficiency and reliability of water delivery while also curbing pollution? What disaster-warning systems and international coordination mechanisms are now in place to avert water-related disasters in Asia?Co-moderated by Giles Merritt, Secretary General of Friends of Europe, and Shada Islam, Head of Policy at Friends of Europe18.00 End of summit
