Overview: In addition to the normal distribution (the Bell-shaped curve), data from testing and measurements often follow other mathematical distributions. One of the more important is the Poisson distribution that describes low frequency events. The application of this distribution to results from microbial testing will be described. Another situation that is often encountered is when the worker does not know what distribution equation will describe the data that are being studied.
