However, because learning takes place in students’ minds it is invisible to others. Learning must be assessed, therefore, through performance— by what students can do with their learning - so that we are able to discern, quantify, qualify and communicate student learning to employers and other interested parties. Assessment then, is the process by which academics form judgments on student achievement and communicate those judgments to others. The assessment of learning can take many forms: summative and formative, individual and collective or authentic and abstract. Indeed, assessment methods are multitudinous with no assessment method fitting all learning situations; the assessment of learning must be designed for a specific context. Also important to the assessment of learning practice is that the assessment method ought to afford additional student learning so that assessment enables a feedback loop that enables students to learn through reflection on their own performance – i.e. that which is often referred to as an assessment for learning approach. The editors, therefore, seek chapters which document innovative methods for assessing learning in higher education. They aspire to publish an anthology which is diverse in nature and which showcases concrete examples of the assessment of learning in higher education from around the world.
