The EU in the WTO

IES Autumn Lecture Series

On Tuesday 8 December at 17.00 the lecture series turns its attention to EU’s performance in the WTO. While the Doha Round remains stalled, the lecture focuses on the Environmental Goods Agreement (EGA) as a case study. The negotiations for the EGA started recently (2014) and aim at removing tariffs on a broad list of environmental goods. The EU also strives to include services related to environmental goods on the agreement, as well as non-tariff barriers. The EGA offers an interesting prism into EU’s role, because the Union has been a global vanguard of both sustainability and free trade. One may therefore wonder how the EU has striven to combine these leadership roles in the EGA negotiations, and whether such a combination has been successful — or rather detrimental — in EU’s efforts when compared to progress in the two fields of policy separately.
