The direct objective of the work by Dimitrios Oikonomou is not political, but through painting, to explore the transformation people endure as present European politics change. The artist seeks to give expression to some people’s distress. His investigation and motives not only relate to past and current events in Greece, but also in Europe, the United States, and in the Arab world.
The artist examines, both through his art and academic research, theories about ‘other- ness’, ‘abjection’, and European Nihilism.
The exhibition could be seen not only as a Nietzschean call for society to evolve and em- brace the horrors, but to have the courage to move towards the future. It is a call for meta-modernism, “to surpass postmodernism as a response to the crises- ridden moment.” (
