Visa Liberalization for Ukraine: Options and Implications

A group of Ukrainian civil society experts will discuss how visa liberalisation is perceived in Ukraine and ponder the political risks of having the process delayed.

This April the European Commission submitted a legislative proposal to cancel visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens planning short-term travel to the Schengen area. The European Parliament will not debate the issue before its summer break, however, and the European Council has de facto postponed consideration of the case.

At the DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations), a group of Ukrainian civil society experts will discuss how visa liberalisation is perceived in Ukraine and ponder the political risks of having the process delayed. Is there a need to safeguard against a setback on domestic reforms once visafree travel has been achieved? Does a visa-free Ukraine imply migration and security concerns for Germany and the EU?

During the event “:Europe without barriers” will present analytics and visuals estimating Ukraine’s migration and security situation.
