The British referendum, globalisation and the rise of populism have prompted immense communication challenges for public administrations. In this ‘post-truth’ world where Social Media has disrupted multiple political, media and other norms, the European Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly, hosts a special seminar to explore new ways of communicating the EU at a time of unprecedented challenges.
The Ombudsman’s work on transparency and accountability can help break down the apparent distance between the EU administration and citizens. Journalists and other communicators can similarly bridge the distance with accurate reporting. But is there still space for nuance and balance? How should reporting and communicating on the EU adapt in the age of social media? Which lessons should EU politicians and institutions learn? And what will it mean for the future of the EU if it does not adapt?
