Objective:

The aim of this seminar is to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and legal tools to use the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) combined with the relevant EU law in their daily practice.
 

Key topics:

• The UNCRPD: purpose, general principles (e.g. non-discrimination, reasonable accommodation, accessibility), rights, formal and substantive relationship with EU law
• The monitoring role of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the complaints mechanism enshrined in the Optional Protocol
• Disability in EU law
• Practical in-depth study of key disability rights in their international, European and national context: legal capacity, access to justice, reasonable accommodation, right to equality & non-discrimination, right to personal mobility
• How to use the UNCRPD in litigating cases before a national or international court
• How to address discrimination on grounds of disability in the context of employment

Travel expenses and accommodation:

Travel expenses will be reimbursed up to a maximum of 360 euros, subject to the submission of original travel receipts. Maximum two nights’ hotel accommodation will be booked and covered directly by ERA.

Legal practitioners, members of NGOs and equality bodies with a legal background, law academics from an EU Member State and those candidate countries and EEA/EFTA countries which have decided to participate in the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme.
