In a world largely based on knowledge and innovation, the protection of intellectual property plays a fundamental role in fostering a thriving economy and a vibrant society. According to figures by the European Patent Office, in 2016 the European Patent has been applied for 159,353 times, registering a slight decrease compared to the preceding year. To simplify the bureaucratic procedures linked to applying and managing patents in the European Union, a Unitary Patent (UP), obtainable through a single request and having immediate effect in 25 EU Member States, is currently being implemented.
This timely Symposium will offer an opportunity to inform and find out more about the current developments and challenges regarding the Unitary Patent Protection and the Unified Patent Court. The conference will evaluate pros and cons of the Unitary Patent Protection, weigh advantages and disadvantages of opting-out, help build strategies for businesses on how to proceed and support the exchange of information and best practice with experts, practitioners and policymakers at EU level.
